Well I criticise when we do rotate, so I might as well criticise when we don't. I think we should have minimised the potential for injuries by playing fringe players and kids. As I said pre-match, I'd have had Leon in goal, Stu the red up top and Zara babe in there somewhere as well. The likes of Alonso and Gerrard wouldn't have been anywhere near the pitch, and we could have got beat 10-0 for all I care.

Anyways, good win and all that

I bet if he had played a load of youngsters and we had lost 10 nil you would have cared!
These things happen, can't wrap players in cotton wool. Some say it was not as important but the win keeps us in high spirits on a roll

You got me Daws, 10-0 would have been a bitter pill to swallow. Equally, I agree you can't wrap players in cotton wool. Just threw the point into the mix as I'm a bit bored and not having seen the match, can't really contribute anything sensible

"Unfortunately Xabi has had seven stitches in his instep," said Sammy after the game.

"We do not know the full extent of the injury, apart from the fact he will be very sore tonight.

"Hopefully there will be no damage but we won't know for the next 24 or 48 hours."

Well that doesnt sound too bad, how the fk did he end up with a gash in his instep?
Stitches will come out in a week to 10 days so he should be back in a month.

mierda da por culo que si torres se lesiona, que si riera ,que si alonso, no os dejan mirar que firman un contrato con un club no una cadena perpetua y tienen que jugar con su nacion, aqui en españa juegan por un club y luego por sus paises, y nadie pidio dinero por una lesion

Well that doesnt sound too bad, how the fk did he end up with a gash in his instep?

It was a divided ball in the border of the box, he went to strike it fiercely with the instep, and he probably found the studs of a tackling defender, in the video you can see a clash when he's about to shoot.

ah shiit... alonso injured eh ?!

well imo that should mean that we go back to 4-4-2 with gerrard and mascherano in the middle... i know lucas has been flavor of the month down here but comeon seriously... with torres back and the run of fixtures we'v got it surely has to be keane and torres upfront with gerrard and mascherano paired in the middle.. start our best lineup...

anyways hope alonso is okay and it doesnt take him long to be back... one of our best performers this season and hes surely going to be missed.. get well soon lad..

I'm not sure Keane in a 4-4-2 is any better than Lucas is a 4-2-3-1. I'd prefer Lucas to start off the back of his recent performances you need to reward good form.

Lets hope Alonso is back for the game against Wigna in three weeks time. Hopefully he can dust off the cobwebs before the Chelsea clash on the 31st.

Hmmm Bigmick.. I think there is some contradiction and inconsistency with what you have been saying about "rotation" there mate..

If you advocate resting important players this time round (since this was an arguably easier match).. what happen to your "continuity" theory? Wouldn't this rest affect these players for the next game against stoke city? And mind you.. whoever rested (let's say gerrard, alonso, reira who have been on red hot form) would have gone 2 weeks without football.

So this time he is wrong bcos he didn't rest Alonso and he got injured?

Had he rested important players and we didn't win (which is possible considering what happened to Chelsea), it is also Rafa's fault?

So Rafa never wins then?!

No in all honesty Milou the post was kind of tongue in cheek, especially considering the games aren't exactly coming thick and fast at the moment. Equally, Daws was spot on when he said you can't wrap players in cotton wool. They can just as easily get injured in training as they can playing.

To tell the truth I probably woujld still have rotated it a little more, but it's hard to argue with the selection too much really. The only minus about the whole thing is that we won (and once again I say this slightly tongue in cheek) in the sense that we'll potentially land ourselves another couple of matches on the back of it. No doubt if we reach the semi finals or something I'll start to get interested, but a little like the Champions League I simply can't get fired up while we are top of the league. That is the be all and end all for me this season at least.

Still think the decision to "rest" Keane against Newcastle was ridiculous though :;):

I think it's one thing to rotate a few players against low level teams in domestic cup games and dead rubber group stage games in the champions league. It's entirely different however to systematically do so in league games as has been the case in the past.

Some rotation is a necessary evil, it's when there's rotation for the sake of it that pisses people off.

If theres no other damage and its just a flesh wound,surely you'd be looking at a month out at least for it to fully heal!
Not good news,Xabi has been a class act for us this season,we will miss him hugely.Theres simply no one near his class to come in and fill his boots!

Only pussies miss games because of a few stitches (depending on where they are) most just strap it up and play on. When I was young I used to regularly read of a player playing with his foot strapped up because of stitches. Often the blood would be oozing out of his boot by the end of the game, but that never stopped him smashing the winning goal in from 30 yards.

If it didn't stop Roy of the Rovers , it shouldn't stop Alonso
