Liverpool ace out for five months
Jan 4 2009

by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

Liverpool ace Xabi Alonso has been dealt a major blow with the news that his most recent foot injury, sustained during yesterday's FA cup tie against Preston, will leave him out of contention for the rest of the season.

The Liverpool midfielder limped off at half time following a collision with a Preston defender. Following tests at Melwood today it was established that the Spanish ace had sustained two broken metatarsals.

More to follow....

Can anyone confirm the reports from Spain saying Alonso's problem is not serious and he may be even able to play against Stoke?

And BTW, while watching the game I didn't like the look of Mascherano's face when he touched the hamstring, any news on the Argie chief???

Taken from NewsNow.

Injury relief for midfielder

Liverpool, 09:53, January 7, 2009

Fears that Xabi Alonso was facing a long lay-off due to a foot injury have been allayed, but he remains a doubt for the Stoke clash.
The midfielder was substituted during the FA Cup win over Preston and then left the ground with stitches in a foot wound and with a brace on the problem.

Scans have revealed that the foot is just badly bruised rather than anything worse although he remains a major doubt for the clash at Stoke on Saturday.

Star striker Fernando Torres is in line to make his first start for the club since late November on Saturday after successfully coming through his substitute appearance at Preston which he capped with a goal courtesy of Steven Gerrard.

Glad to see that he'll be back for the derbies. We really need his calmness in these games.
