Phil Thompson says it would not make logistical sense for Liverpool to share a stadium with Everton.

Everton chief executive Robert Elstone has suggested the club would consider sharing a ground with their city rivals after plans for their new stadium were rejected by the Government.

The Toffees had hoped to leave Goodison Park and build a new stadium and a shopping complex at Kirkby, but after their proposals were turned down the issue of sharing a ground with Liverpool has been raised.

Liverpool's bid to build a new stadium at Stanley Park has been hit by financial problems and it could potentially make economic sense for the two clubs to share one stadium in the city.

However, former Liverpool captain Thompson is adamant that the idea is a non-starter and says he is eagerly anticipating the development of Liverpool's new stadium.

"I'm very much against it," Thompson told Sky Sports News.

"Like a lot of Evertonians and Liverpudlians I'm very proud of what we've got.

"Yes, because of the finances at Everton and at Liverpool everybody will put this back on the agenda, but seriously, no, I can't see it happening.

"I don't want it to happen and I would like to see our new stadium, hopefully when it gets built in probably August 2018, and we'll look forward to it immensely."

Arrangement
Thompson, a resident of Kirkby, says it is right that Everton's plans were rejected and says he has looked into the idea of ground sharing.

Italian clubs Inter and AC Milan share the San Siro Stadium in Italy, but Thompson says that arrangement creates problems for the ground staff with so many matches being played on the same pitch.

He also says it would be difficult to create an infrastructure for two separate clubs within one stadium.

"You've got to look at it," he continued.

"I've spoken long and hard to people at Liverpool about the San Siro and it's not just about the football pitch itself which takes a hell of a battering.

"Come December the pitches are awful, they have to keep changing the football pitch.

"But it's also about how you structure the ground; the megastores, the offices and things like that. It doesn't actually work out when you sit down and you think about it.

"I just don't think it is relevant at this time. Let's sort out which way they both want to go.

"Everton now is not coming to my town in Kirkby, which I believe is the right decision.

"At Liverpool, I would like to think the finances will come up. We need a stadium probably more than what Everton do."

All the scousers come out in their droves and shoot thommo down.

Its logical, which some on here simplt aren't. They want the best football club in the world, yet forever mock OOT's. They know who they are, so i ain't picking no internet fights with them. RTK was almost close to alienating OOT's. Yet, Liverpool is for the people, regardless of where you live. I have plenty of mates in Liverpool, some living very close to Anfield, (Richmond Park) and they dont go to Anfield at all. Talk about support!

Its not an ideal situation, but what are the alternatives. The easy Fack OFF statements are based on what? Ask any Roman what they feel for their club? Same in Milan. It works, its like a tabboo over here. Yet, once someone does it then im sure you might get others following suit.

Football has changed, in ain't the 70's no more. We aint gonna get a great manger to come in and build a team on a pittance. Ita all about money now, and we have to move very fast. We can still make it ours, and more importantly that the rest of the world would know we played there. Like the Allianze, everyone knows Bayern play there but how many know that it is shared with a shitty team in blue?

Maybe you should ask the same romans and milanese why they (all four clubs ROMA, LAZIO ,MILAN AND INTER) have applied for planning permission to build there own stadiums . Because they've lost there identity and are not making enough money to keep themselves afloat . Costs halved yes ,but profits halved also . In this world of 80 million pound players ,how the hell our we to compete with halve the profits of a 60'000 seater stadia ..

Another thing the yanks want big bucks for the naming rights for the new stadium ,do you think they will be prepared to give that up to share with the bitters ? No i don't think so either .

No chance ,none starter and over my dead body .

I remember hearing on the radio once they were talking about the San Siro and Inters dressing room is quite small compared to AC's. Also in the middle it there is even a big AC plaque. Not sure if that last bit is true but anyway I don't want a shared stadium. It would never work. Let them rot.

im against a shared stadium like most of you but not closed to the idea should it be the only way to take the club forward. lets face it are we ever going to be in a position to build our own, we have been going on about it for ten years now and still no spade in the ground.

unless the two yanks get some investment into the club we may find ourselves with no other choice but to consider it, or not and stay where we are and fall further behind.

I couldn't care less if we played on a bit of waste ground, Torres dodging the dog sh!t and the broken bottle as he nets another goal inbetween the stolen road cones. As long as the team performs and wins the trophies we've come to expect does it really matter?

Lets ground share with Tranmere instead - makes no difference.

Following on from the recent announcement of Everton FC's planned move to Kirkby being rejected, the inevitable talk of a proposed ground share between the two clubs has re-surfaced. We would like to take this opportunity to again make clear our stance on such an issue. At a Spirit Of Shankly EGM in September 2008, Union members voted unanimously against the idea of sharing a stadium with Everton FC. This stance remains unchanged, despite the best efforts of those in the media and in positions of influence trying to encourage it. Listen to what the fans are saying - No ground share!

Liverpool FC to start work on new stadium before April 2010

LIVERPOOL FC are finally hoping to start work on their new stadium before April, the ECHO can reveal.

Liverpool Council leader Warren Bradley revealed that LFC managing director Christian Purslow had told the council the club hoped to make progress on the new ground in the first quarter of 2010.

Cllr Bradley also revealed, in an exclusive interview, that the local authority will hold high level talks with Everton FC about its own plans for a new ground on Monday, January 11.

EFC were forced back to the drawing board after the Government rejected a planned to move to Kirkby alongside Tesco in a £400m development.

Everton confirmed the meeting and said the club was hoping to set up a working party with senior officials and Cllr Bradley to move forward its hunt for a new home.

Liverpool council has been keen to keep the Blues within the city boundaries, whether at a new site or a revamped Goodison.

Cllr Bradley said: “We have got a meeting with Everton Football Club where we will put all our cards on the table. I will be there as will be council chief executive Colin Hilton and executive director of regeneration John Kelly.

“We want to make sure that we can facilitate things for Everton FC.

“They want to discuss Bellefield and the stadium. We fully understand they need some commercial support for a stadium.”

The council and EFC have clashed over the club’s desire to build homes on its former training ground Bellefield.

In January 2009 the club lost an appeal against the council’s decision to reject plans to build 74 homes on the site in West Derby.

Cllr Bradley said it was pleasing to see that LFC was on the brink of making a start with its 60,000 seater ground on Stanley Park.

The lack of progress on the £400m stadium is one of the main sources of discontent among fans with the ownership of Americans Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

Cllr Bradley said: “Liverpool FC’s Christian Purslow has told us that the club in the first quarter of next year should be able to move forward with the stadium.

“We have told them it’s time to move on now, it’s gone on too long.

“I honestly believe Christian Purslow has been open and honest with us. Hopefully in the first quarter of next year we will see some movement. Without doubt it’s not before time.”

Earlier this month the ECHO revealed how Mr Purslow was forced to open up the club’s finances to the England 2018 team in order to persuade officials to include Liverpool as a host city for the country’s bid to host the World Cup.

The Reds had to prove to FA bid bosses that it could deliver a new stadium and would be able to raise the cash.

Mr Purslow was forced to make the disclosures in front of Everton chief executive Robert Elstone as they made the final case for Liver-pool to be included in England’s World Cup bid.

Today a spokesman for Liverpool FC said: “Construction of the stadium will begin when the current contraction in the banking industry ends and the global financial markets re-establish their equilibrium.”
