alonso and mascherano are very good players, but they're not our best players. arbeloa was our best right back but not one of our best players. i think that once aquilani gets a couple more games under his belt we'll miss alonso a lot less, and i think that benitez isn't stupid enough (i hope) and keen enough on DMs to get a proper replacement in with the mascherano money. we already know that at right back we've seen a huge improvement - at least in the attacking sense.
alonso was as good as gone as soon as he was put up for sale the summer before and it seems like mascherano's feelings a combination of family pressure and agent head turning.
i'm not too worried about these players' reasons for leaving but i'll be worried if other important players begin to think the ship might be sinking and it might be time to jump off as well. and with benitez being such a great man manager and all...

andy_g wrote:yeah, i know. the point i was trying to make is that they are not the 'irreplaceables' like torres and gerrard - as we've seen already this season we are a bit fecked without them. alonso has been badly missed but will be less so now that aquilani is coming into the picture. mascherano is a great DM, captain of argentina etc etc etc, but hasn't been at his best for a while and we've still won games. as long as he is replaced sensibly i don't think we'll miss him as much as some fear.

Well based on how we didn't replace Alonso id say it is a bit of a situation. Rafa probably wont be able to spend as much as he rakes in.

s@int wrote:What worries me most is what Alonso said. He is not the type of player who slags off a team for no reason, so when he says something I think it carries a bit of weight. He said something along the lines of....... "the team has changed too much since 2006, and things are'nt the same".
I think one of the hardest things in football is getting a good team spirit among the players. With all the changes both of staff and players, and the problems with the owners I wonder whether the moral and spirit of the club is not what it should be. We have seen heads dropping or being shaken when players have come off, rumours of blazing rows between key players in the dressing room, and even on the pitch things have been tense at times.
Obviously our troubled start to the season hasn't helped , but maybe its just a sign of problems within the club rather than just loss of form.
