I think this will be a tough game today, we really need to start the game well and get an early goal.

I think Masch will be brought back for this game with Gerrard moved up to partner Torres.

                      Reina

Johnson   Carra     Skrtel       Aurelio/insua

Kuyt        Masch       Lucas       Benny

                    Gerrard
                          Torres

Hopefully we will keep a clean sheet and grab the vital goal.

I'm not too optimistic about this game, we've never had a consistently good record there :(

Looking optimisticly at the "2 games lost already" angle, its prob best to compare our stats with the champions last season (who lost 4? Last season). Which means we have at least 2 "spare" defeats left this season to be on track with last years winners! :p

It doesn't really work like that though mate unfortunately. Quite simply, come February you are either in the title hunt or you aren't, and if you aren't it is impossible to keep pace with those that are. Either a team puts together a sustained run pulls clear and wins it, or a couple of teams settle down for a dogfight as happened last season.

The match which turned the season around for us was the Mancs away. We went into that game almost out of it, and managed to get ourselves almost back in it with that win. As we were back in it, we then went on a sustained winning run but unfortunately for us we had already handed the title to the Mancs earlier in the season and they weren't about to hand it back, so they won many matches too.

That's the way of it. If you're in contention you roll over teams relentlessly as you home in on winning the thing, buoyed by the extreme belief, confidence and desire that you go into each match expecting to win. You boss matches from minute one, all in pre flop and the smaller stacks are happy to step aside and avoid getting beaten up.

I'll tell you this for free. If we draw at West Ham and Chelsea win, and then lose at Stamford Bridge we are absolutely dead in the water. We'll only have lost three so you could argue that we can "afford one more defeat" but you'd be wasting your time. We'd be eleven points behind Chelsea, between 3 and 9 behind the Mancs and well adrift of City.

At that point you wouldn't quite be resting people in favour of Cup matches, but you wouldn't be far off. Under those circumstances, IMHo we'd be gone for all money, regardless of the number of defeats.

I can see that being the team aswell mate.  Benitez is always tempted to play the two sitting midfielders away from home.

I hope not though.  I think the team has more width and balance with Riera in it, but at the same time Benayoun and Kuyt are both in form and I wouldn't leave either out.  I'd try and accomodate all three, which means either Lucas or Mascherano doesn't play and Gerrard starts centre mid.  I'd keep the same team as midweek, with Masch in for Lucas and perhaps Aurelio in for Insua if he's fit enough.

This is another must win game.

Think Rafa will stick to the formation we have had in the last few games but have Mascha instead of Lucas.

Can see Torres having a good game after what he has said in the press recently.

Keep your head down Nan, they're all like Alf Garnett there!

Come on Reds, lets bag a few goals to keep the confidence up.

well if the guardian site is to be believed, the subs bench is suddenly looking a lot more healthy:

Cavalieri, Aurélio, Agger, Kyrgiakos, Voronin, Riera, Babel, Ngog, Spearing, Dossena, Ayala
