WEST HAM VS LIVERPOOL - Sat 5.30 pm kick off (espn)

Liverpool Football Club - Games

Postby Effes » Wed Sep 16, 2009 9:36 pm

West Ham haven't had a great start to the season:

Their games so far:

Aug  15th   Wolves away   Win    2-0
Aug  23rd   Spurs   home   Lose   1-2
Aug  29th   BBurn   away   Draw  0-0
Sept 12th  Wigan  away    Lose   0-1

We won 3-0 away there last season, on 9th May 2009 which is not that long ago.

Interesting to see our line up that day:

25 Jose Reina
37 Martin Skrtel
12 Fábio Aurélio
17 Álvaro Arbeloa
23 Jamie Carragher
15 Yossi Benayoun
20 Javier Mascherano
21 Lucas Leiva
8 Steven Gerrard
9 Fernando Torres
18 Dirk Kuyt

Substitutions
Fábio Aurélio out for Emiliano Insúa 54'
Fernando Torres out for Ryan Babel 72'
Yossi Benayoun out for Andrea Dossena 82'

I could see a similar team playing on Saturday, it's worth noting that we started with Lucas.

With this in mind, we should be capable of a win in this.
Although, the home result against Villa should remind us how results can be reversed.

I will be in Amsterdam watching this with a large Camberwell Carrot and a pair of empty nuts.  :D

Difference between now and playing them in May is we were on a strong run at the end of last season, regardless of how similar the line-ups could be.

Aren't the 'posh seats' the one the West Ham fans aren't throwing at you? Or is it the ones they didn't trash?

again 3 points is a must for me. we are putting together a good run of results now,so the performances will get better as we go through the season i'm confident of that.

for me i'd stick with the same side & formation as in midweek- apart from masha in for lucas that for me is one change that needs to happen especially away from home. let masha play his defensive midfield role an let stevie have a bit more freedom to push foward, dictact the midfield play an create better chances for our attacking play. i don't want to see us play deep for this one let's get stuck in from the kick off an don't let them have any time on the ball whatso ever.

if we need to play on the counter attack this formation would be also be the right one as we'd have plenty of pace going foward. but i'd rather see us create chances from the kick off by giving torres more support in attack, especially from corners etc so their are players in an around the box to follow up chances, an all will be fine i'm sure.

I hope we win. I don't care if it's 1-0 or 5-0 it's a must win. We're getting higher in confidence. And hopefully when Agger and Aquilani return we will be on good form.

Well due to our dodgy start, we really could do with winning again. Normally you'd go into games against the likes of West Ham Away feeling that a draw would be an OK result, but this time it probably won't be the case. Obviously we are helped out somewhat by four of our main rivals playing against each other, but almost regardless of what happens in those games there will be pressure on us to win.

Even if the results go favourably between Chelsea and Spurs, and the Mancs and Citeh (and my personal preference would be for two away wins) there will be huge expectation on us to capitalise on our "opportunity", and rightly so because we won't get many. Two draws would be by no means a disaster, while two Home wins wouldn't make it an absolute MUST win but it wouldn't be far off.

If Chelsea win and we don't, we'd be at least 8 points behind them. Out of it at that point? Well much would depend on the Man Utd result, but if they beat City leving us at least five points behind them as well, I'd say we were out of it to all intents and purposes yes.

It would absolutely definately in my view make the match at Stamford Bridge the following week pretty much a must win, with the obvious rider that a defeat would see us dead in the water.

So we'd beat beat West Ham then. I think we will, as long as we pick a sensible team.

Rumour is we're going to be unchanged for the third game in a row. :oh:

If we are, you can't get much more sensible than that. I would have definately not picked Torres in midweek, but it's hard to argue with the manager if he keeps on picking the same team.

A rest could do some players some good, and it also can catch the opposition off guard in terms of tactics.

If we could win that would put us in a decent position given our two defeats already, if we keep winning then the two losses won't be too damaging and it is our best way back into the title race :

After six games 09/10 : P6 W4 D0 L2 PTS 12
After six games 08/09 : P6 W4 D2 L0 PTS 14

Corresponding games 08/09 : P5 W3 D1 L1 PTS 10
Corresponding games 09/10 : P5 W3 D0 L2 PTS 9

So if we win at UP we can be within one point compared to the corresponding fixtures last season. BUT we won games 6-10 last season, a repeat of that is very much needed this season regardless of who we play

Next 10 Premiership games (and corresponding 08/09 results)

West Ham (a) : W3-0
Hull (a) : W3-1
Chelsea (a) : W1-0
Sunderland (a) : W1-0
Man Utd (h) : W2-1
Fulham (a) : W1-0
Birmingham (h) : n/a
Man City (h) : D1-1
Everton (a) : W2-0
Blackburn (a) : W3-1

Not much pressure then :

Corresponding fixtures 08/09 : P13 W10 D2 L1 PTS 32
After 15 fixtures 08/09 : P15 W10 D4 L1 PTS 34

I think I've said before we set a difficult standard to maintain in losing only twice last season and with such a good start, and also that we might not get another opportunity/start as good. Our best hope is to keep winning and hope to correct the bad spell we had in the first two months of this year with too many draws (P7 W2 D4 L1 PTS 10) Either way we need to be positive and play attacking football, attacking football 'come what may' may be the only way to be there come May
