Alonso in defensive warning
by Francisco Acedo -  Last Updated 1 Sep 2004

Xabi Alonso feels Liverpool must tighten up at the back if they are to make progress under Rafa Benitez.

The Spain international made his debut for The Reds in last Sunday's 1-0 reverse at Bolton.

Alonso admits he has not yet fully adjusted to life in England but is confident of proving himself as the season progresses.

However, the former Real Sociedad star concedes Liverpool have a lot of work to do if they are to challenge The Premiership's leading clubs.

"The result (against Bolton) was not good," Alonso stated.

"But I've made my debut, and I know a little more about my team-mates now and, with time, the team can improve the defensive tactics which is what we need to work on most.

"I have signed for a great club where I hope to achieve good things."

I am sorry, but I dont think that Xabi mentioning the need to play well defensively in order to go places in football constitues him "speaking out".

This is just the kind of sensationalism that makes me laugh.

this isnt being gobby at all!!!!

i've read the same f***** interview, probably one in which a reporter has asked a question first, relating to what he's saying. he only says that the tactics need to be worked on, which they do as the squad havent had much time to do that.

how is that bein gobby. F***** hell some people are so fickle
its not the chilli sauce on kebabs that give you ring-sting, its the actual meat. had one without chilli, and still had ring-sting. the chilli's only there to mask the nonsense they stuff inside that bread.

You have just reiterated my point.

Just cus Sky Sports goes with the headline Alonso issues a warning, you think it has happened.

You need to sift thru the articles to read any quotes before thinking he has issued any warning.

i agree with cardiff-red calm down folks its only a few words, alonso is well known for his coments, during the first game against spurs benitez said how alonso came to him with a few tips on liverpools play, a player who tries to help in this way just tells you alonso wants to be a winner and help the coach and the team. matrix.

Agree with you there mate.

When Garcia and Alonso signed there was a superb photo in the Guardian of the two of em stepping out the tunnel at Anfield in their new red shirts. The contrast b/w them was great: Garcia looked thrilled, like he'd really arrived. Alonso strode out with this real aura about him and you could tell what he was thinking: 'Is this club big enough for me and where I'm going?'

That's the kind of player we want

I reckon we need to work on the attacking side alot more as the service to Baros and Cisse has been terrible, the 2nd half v man city aside.

This has been our problem for along time now but hopefully we will start playing with more width and attack at pace with players breaking forward giving the player on the ball alot more options.

We have the players going forward to scare every team in the league. :D
Smith to Shankly:My thigh is a bit sore, but I think I could play.
Shankly to Fagan:Tell him,Joe.He has got no chance of playing.
Smith to Fagan:Tell him to sod off.It is not his leg,it's mine.
Shankly to Smith:Oh no son.You are wrong, son. It is not your leg.
It is Liverpool Football Club's leg.

Big deal , Alonso states what we have all known for a season or two at Anfield. We need a Quality CB to compliment Hyppia. Don't know what all the fuss is about myself ???

No big deal as we all know about this. he did not slag anybody off and the reported quote may have been a result of their editing and taken alone, seems like he said those things. It is just press sensationalisation.
