It's normal that he didn't remember you. He was your first footie fan to share a footie moment, you were his 904.344th.

As for the time needed to watch footie, I have a little envy, as I don't have the time to watch that much footie today. I watch one game live of Segunda division, one game live of women football and one game live of school football. I watch Liverpool's game complete, and if we win, I watch it twice.

About the Liga, these days with my local club in Segunda I only watch one game per week and the highlights. So you're a better guy to ask about the liga right now mate!

When I was your age I should have watched more footie, I spent too much time in students flats smoking hash and what we call here "saving the world" (talking about politics and stupid things). I would have changed some of the fiesta and alcohol for football, around here the students are some sort of weekend lcoholics, and when you review that part of your life you only remember hangovers, sluts you should have avoided. It was fun yes, but I wish I had practiced more sport, or gone to the mountains with more "healthy" friends, or watched more footie at home.

One of the best moments with friends in a student flat were to watch games of Spain in group, watching footie with friends is something especial. I'm of the school of thought that when you watch footie with friends you have more euphoria, more kneeling down on front of the tv when your team scores and glorious moments like that.

well it wasn't like I talked to him for those 5 minutes. Forgot to mention that my friend Chris and I talked to this guy and his friend for like an hour and a half before the game because we had to get there so early, and we were all smart and found this small outside area to get away from the crowd when the game wasn't on.

Thinking about it more, I might have messed up my La Liga watch numbers. I watch Barca and Real every week, and then I watch when Sevilla, Valencia, Villareal, and Ateltico  play each other (or like Sevilla v. Betis) And then a 1 hour weekly wrap up.

When I was in school I spent a lot of time being much more than just a weekend alcoholics. I was probably lucky that my parents never gave me spending around money or else I would have gone out a lot more than I did. But as far as the talking about politics in a university flat etc., that certainly seems pretty European.  A lot of my friends were pretty big pot heads but they would just listen to jam bands or watch straight to dvd movies.

Certainly agree about watching footy with people though. When I was in school and didn't have the cable package I have at home I would have to watch on the internet or when I could at footy bar in DC, which always more fun (but more expensive too)

Growing up, no one liked soccer.  Never heard of the MLS, just the big clubs from around the world.  International wise, I always want the USA to do well, but we all know that will never happen.  So I guess it could be second team, but I follow my second team much more then my home team? :D

NHL was always #1 on my list.  I've been a New York Rangers fan since I can remember (I'm 37).
Baseball #2 (New York Mets)
College Football (Rutgers)
College Basketball (Rutgers)
NFL (Kansas City Chiefs)
NBA (NY Knicks)

2 Championships between them in my lifetime.  So I am definitely not a fair weather fan LOL.

The Rankings above were true I'd say until about 10 years ago.  Basketball of both College and NBA are now nonexistent to me.  Depending on what season it is then I would rate as follows.

Tie between NY Rangers, LFC, Rutgers Football, NY Mets.

On the backburner, even during the NFL Season is the KC Chiefs.

The College Football season for all the passion I have for it is really only 3 months long (Sept, Oct, Nov) and one week into December.  Then a wait for a month for a bowl game that is basically an exhibition unless it's one of the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) games, and Rutgers has never played in one.  The Baseball season just really starts getting going when Hockey and Footie are wrapping up so the conflict is minimal.  LFC matches are mostly in the morning, some in the afternoon, and hockey games are mostly at night so not much conflict there.

The reason I chose LFC.  It's simple.  I was in London (a few weeks before the Hillsborough disaster) in the early spring of 89 and went into a bar and there was a match on.  It was Liverpool vs (I don't remember).  I picked the team from Liverpool because I was fascinated by the The Beatles, John Lennon mostly.  Plus they wore Red.

It was very difficult to follow from the other side of the Atlantic.  I remember watching Sportcenter on ESPN shortly after returning to New Jersey and seeing the Hillsborough reports, I remember my mother crying while watching.

News of European football at the time was basically just a fixture and table list on the results page of the newspaper.  But I followed from afar.  The internet and ESPN broadcasting the CL has made things alot easier.  As well as the cable company carrying FSC.  Istanbul was the match that really pulled me in whole hog.  This site has also had a big influence on me regarding the passion and the history of the club.

Current Rankings for me

LFC
New York Rangers (Playoffs start in two weeks)
New York Mets (season starts in a week).

I won't celebrate Rafa going........ but I will be over the moon if Dalglish comes in. League within 2 years if he gets the job, AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

Great post Joe and jeez you´ve learned quick as many of your posts are excellent.

You need to plan a trip over to Liverpool and stay with the lads and get a few games in.
Also, get yerself over to Rome next month for the final!

Sometimes it happens mate.

I exploded with the Spain goal of Torres, but other times I couldn't explode. Probably it had a lot to do with watching your German friend suffering, and subsconcious pushed you to not :censored: off  him too  much?

I do not react the same to all goals in Liverpool and Real Sociedad games. Some of the reactions I can explain, some I can't. For instance I can't help not cheering up a 4th goal like your cheer up a first goal. It happened in the Manchester game, I was a lot happier with the first, than in the 4th. I've seen friends though that are equally explosive in each goal, but in my case it seems as if in the first two goals I liberate too much energy or something. I think everybody is different celebrating goal. Look Rafa  :D

after my words of inspiration, Ireland played better than years to draw in italy with the world champions and robbie keane missed a great last minute chance to win the game.

So you've only really had an interest in football for roughly 3 years? My god, you've missed out. Missed out a LOT.

Another question: why do Americans insist on calling certain events as a "world series" when the said sport is just competing with teams within the North American borders?

I think my friend pushed me a bit towards Liverpool because his dad is a massive West Ham supporter, and this summer was in the wake of the the FA Cup win.
