Liverpool boss Benitez to take £20M Robben gamble - 23.03.09

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is ready to take a gamble on Real Madrid winger Arjen Robben.

The Daily Star Sunday says Benitez is planning a £20million bid for Real Madrid's former Chelsea winger.

Robben has been outstanding for Real this season - when fit - and there remains doubts over his ability to stand up to rigours of top-flight football.

Have wanted Silva for well over a year now - in fact had a long running argument with a poster from another board who said silva would be a waste of money and didnt rate him and wanting to spend the 20 mil on a striker and was happy we got keane - well we did that and look what happened - so hopefully this summer it will be the way of getting a top quality creative player for the big bucks ie Silva and a decent back up striker for a bit less.

plus these rumours are great

Rafa Benitez is ready to use part of his £100 million war chest to sign Real Madrid's Arjen Robben according to Spanish newspaper Marca, and Sampdoria forward Antonio Cassano according to reports in Italy.

Marca report that former Chelsea player Robben is ready to swap life in Madrid for Anfield after a disastrous season at the Bernabeu, struggling in the League and being knocked out of the Champions League by Rafa's reds. The injury prone forward could cost as much as £20 million.

Italy's Il Gioiello di Bari, jewel of Old Bari, Antonio Cassano will not be moving to Juventus in the Summer after the Turin side decided to stick with starlet Sebastian Giovinco, nicknamed fantasista. According to Tuttosport the Old Lady have pulled out of negotiations for Cassano, opening the way for a move to Liverpool. The Italian international could cost up to £15 million.

Cassano has been dubbed a trouble maker by many Italian journalists, with ex-coach Fabio Capello coining the neologism, Cassanata. Used by the Italian press as a euphemism for incompatible behaviour

Robben has been flying for Real for the most part of this season. I know he was quiet against us, but everybody was. I don't see why they would sell him other than maybe he gets injured too much, which would be a reason not to buy him.

"I have a lot of desire to beat Liverpool. They are a very strong side but when I was Chelsea, I did not like playing against them. I prefer to play Manchester United or Arsenal, because Liverpool are not a team who know how to play good football"

Robben can fuk off, liverpool is better then him.

Ibrahimovich also being linked with a move to Madrid, Barcelona, and Manchester.

i'd take robben.. just the type of player we need... probably one of the best out and out wingers in world football today... 20mill sounds about right...

oh if we can manage to get Robben AND Silva... down each flank... Owen for free... Maybe Rafinha or Glen Johnson or any other right back...

thats around 50 or 50sumthin million...

sell Kuyt or Babel + voronin + few others.. + money from keane deal + summer budget.... should balance off i think..... MAKE IT HAPPEN !

Marca speculates about Robben, but doesn't mention the 100 M.

It's typical Marca stuff. They have been beaten by Liverpool, and one way they have to feel better is to come here and sign up Gerrard and Alonso.

They've known early enough Gerrard is out of reach, so they start talking about the possible exchange coins for the basque, in this case Robben.

Mind you, I think they're going to offer silly money for Alonso, don't think about Alonso's quality, Real Madrid doesn't sign only for that, there are other reasons (like appeasing the voices that say Madrid should play with more Spaniards). As I say, I think they're going to offer silly money, and I'm not sure Rafa won't accept it.

It would be a pity not to watch Xabi playing week in week out for me, but if it's a Madridesque offer, and they offer names like Robben, it's going to be complex to say no.  :( , it's just a gut feeling I have.

Then we should counter with Alonso, Arbeloa, and Babel for Robben, Ramos, and Sneijder  :D

Now that would be awesome, but I don't see it happening.  Arjen is their best player and they're not letting him go anytime soon.

i cant see us getting a full season out of him if we did get him
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

He is a bit selfish when it comes to passing. He prefers shooting than assisting. That led to that argument between him and Hunter. Many times Hunter and Raul would be in good positions and he would just refuse to pass. Now that wouldnt fit into our style of game where passing is the most important asset
