Got my mates 21st tonight, game kicks off around 11.30pm here.
Looks like i'll only be making a quick appearance and then straight off to the pub, he won't be happy but nothing would stop me missing this.

Fingers and toes crossed.

I agree with you on the lads doing us proud bit, I've got a feeling we are going to put in a big performance tonight.

As for Gerrard on the right, I did say that I wouldn't personally do it but it wouldn't surprise me if Rafa did. I don't say that in a "aw FFS he's bound to do something stupid" way, it wouldn't surprise me because it's a move which has some merit.

Although it wouldn't surprise me, it would surprise Ferguson :laugh:

. Seriously though, they will have a set up to avoid the eventuality of Gerrard getting the ball. They will try and cut off the umbilical chord which links Gerrard and Torres to the rest of the team (becomes a whole lot easier if Alonso isn't playing too). They'll do that by sitting Carrick/Anderson/someone else IN FRONT of Gerrard. They'll try and screen him out of it which will make the captain drop deeper, behind the screener in order to get on the ball. This will do three things. It will make Torres isolated, it will make us play a genuine 4-5-1 and it will ensure that if and when Gerrard gets it, he will be a long way from their goal. It will also encourage us to try and hit Torres from distance, and even if we can we will have trouble getting numbers up to support him. That might be four things but who's counting. If we don't play well and/or Gerrard and Torres don't get going, THIS will be the reason for it.

I'll leave it there because it's getting long and no doubt boring, but anyway.

Right so back to Gerrard and the umbilical chord. How do we get round it? Well we need to get round it both literally and metaphorically, by showing some quality in posession and moving the football and ourselves around the pitch with slickness and precision. If they screen Gerrrd, then we need to encourage him to drift well away from central, to possibly pull one of the centre halves into an inside right/left slot and ask the question to a sufficient extent that they are forced to get the defensive midfielder in behind the captain as opposed to out in front.

The other alternative, is that we play Gerrard wide right. P!sses on their matches completely, and allows us to play two up top which will give them somethign extra tot think about. Gerrard wide right will put the brakes on Evra good and proper, and the likelyhoodis whoever they put at left side of midfield is probably going to be doing plenty of backpeddling too. Course (and this is always the beauty of Gerrard on the right) once he starts to drift in, he's so much harder to stop from getting on the ball. The problem with trying this system, is once again Alonso isn't playing. If his is/was, then pinging it to Gerrard with monotonous regularity isn't a bother. If you're relying on Lucas to do it, it's a different equation as that's not the fella's game. What happens then is Gerrard starts to drift in looking for the ball, and gets sucked into the Bermuda triange around their midfielders, AND you lose all width. Kind of like a lose lose situation.

That's why I don't think we'll try it, and obviously because it would be a bit out there considering how well we played against Madrid.

3-2 to us. Stormer of a match, Gerrard with the winner in the dying seconds. Cometh the hour and all that old b0ll0cks. Anyway, I'm gonna go watch Wierd Saturday nights with Louis Theroux or whatever the feck it is, and I'll beback in an hour or so. Starting to get a bit angsty now, I'd love to beat these c...s if only to stop the media having a w@nk every time they play.

No chance I hear the cry, but I tell you what stranger things have happened. It'd stop Evra's gallop good and proper, and give us a cast iron gauranteed outball from the left side as well.

Not saying I'd necessarily agree with it, but I could see the validity in it. Gerrard right midfield, and chance?

I'm pretty sure had Keane still been here, Rafa would of opted to play Torres upfront alone. Considering we're away at OT I dont believe for one minute Rafa would of played two upfront.

So for this fixture in particular the selling of Keane isnt a major factor, unless Torres is injured of course.

Rafa would of played a five man midfield no matter the strikers available. Of course it is a shame Alonso misses this match if the speculation is true about his injury. Its a real worry Lucas coming in for the Alonso, I can see it now clumbsy challenges and needless fouls. Ontop of that Lucas doesnt have the ability Alonso does, its a big loss.

Never the less the result against Madrid should have the lads believeing in themselves, and stranger things have happened i.e we beat this mob at home without Torres and Gerrard.

I just hope Gerrard doesnt curl up and loose his bottle, as he has done before in these fixtures.

Hopefully stevie turns up for this game , he tends to go missing and if stevie is playing well the whole team will . Nothing officially about alonso yet , i think rafa will start with him . The mancs have nothing to lose and will probably sit back and play on the counter

I mean they can afford a draw mate , they will still be 7 points ahead with a draw thus i don't think they will go all out . Play on the break and try to get set pieces near our penalty area
