No other player could have played better than Xabi in that position this season.

Any thought of selling him when we are top of the league and top of the CL group is madness.

Surely Valencia can't afford to buy ANYONE right now? Weren't they broke in the Summer?

Sadly the better he plays the more his value will increase, IMO if Raffa was  resigned to the fact he could afford to lose him I dont think that he is going to change his mind. IMO he would be crazy to let him go, I would prefer to see Lucas go if we are going to trim the midfield but Xabi is obviously worth a lot more than Lucas. Gerrard and Mascherano would go for a higher price but it looks like Raffa sees both of them as his first choice midfield pairing ( discuss). I have a sneaky feeling that the Gareth Barry thing is not over with yet either.

Why a handful? , i'm sure if we sign him , rafa will play him often with keane and him get a run out in the side . Good to have strength in dept and rafa can rotate without weakening the strike force by too much

Manager Martin O'Neill insists Aston Villa will not be looking to cash in on prize asset Gareth Barry in January.

Barry almost joined Liverpool in an £18million deal in the summer and Villa feel there will be renewed interest in the England international come the next transfer window, with Arsenal and Tottenham expected to join the race.

The continued presence of Barry has helped Villa to fifth place in the Premier League and an impressive start to their Uefa Cup campaign.

Should Villa hang on to Barry for the rest of the season then he could buy out the remaining year of his contract for just £2million next summer.

And O'Neill maintains that is a risk the club is willing to take.

"Cashing in on Gareth has never been a big concern - it certainly wasn't in the summer for the owner of this club," O'Neill told the Daily Star Sunday.

Cut price
"If it had been we'd have taken a cut price for him then.

"I don't know if our success this season is having any effect on Gareth's future here. We'll take it through to the window and see what develops.

"I couldn't tell you for certain how he feels because I haven't spoken to him about it.

"But there is time enough to think about it after Christmas.

"He is playing very well and has bounced back from the disappointment of what went on in the summer.

"I don't know where we stand politically on players buying out contracts. But if Gareth doesn't sign a new deal he will have one year left to run after this season."

Buying players' contracts out is just plain evil. Besides, if anyone does that, it makes a very dangerous precedent. If any player's unhappy at Club X, Club Y can always offer them the money to buy their own contact out. It would be total chaos. And EVIL!

ur not serious are you ?
theyr players, humans not washing machines... if a player is unhappy at his club and the club arent allowing him to move to anothr club i think its only fair that the player is able to buy out his contract... where he ends up playing aftr that is a different story ..
playrs shouldnt b forced to playor stay when they dont want to and imo this contract buy out ruling is a very good one thats long overdue !

We dont need him, lets find a couple of defenders instead. We should be trimming our own squad, not addng to it. Its one thing for transfer prices to come down but we need to see wages head south as well.

At 2m we certainly do need Barry.

You talk about trimming the squad down well signing Barry is a way we could do that. After all Barry isn't just a central midfielder. He can and has played CB, LB, LM & CM and various stages in his career for Villa.

If we signed Barry for 2M its far easier to trim the squad down without compromising the quality of team we are fielding.  For 2m we can't afford not to sign him really.

I wouldn't want Barry on a free transfer if it meant selling Alonso.

The EPL spending boom is over. Now we get back to maarket prices that make sense.

Chelsea not looking to spend, says Kenyon       Reuters, Monday, 10 November 2008

Chelsea are unlikely to bolster their squad in the January transfer window, chief executive Peter Kenyon said on Monday.

"It's not high on the agenda," Peter Kenyon told the International Football Arena at FIFA headquarters when asked if coach Luiz Felipe Scolari would be allowed to buy players.

"We have an agreed squad size of 24. We had that squad size at the beginning of the year. January is s notoriously bad time to buy players," Kenyon said.

Chelsea, owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, has reviewed its cost base as it seeks to remain on track to meet its target of becoming profitable by the 2010/2011 season, Kenyon said.

"I think that's good management and prudent in these conditions," he said in a a podium interview about the effect of the global financial crisis on football.

Chelsea top the Premier League standings on goal difference from Liverpool after 12 games.

AC Milan are willing to offer France midfielder Yoann Gourcuff to Liverpool as part of a deal to entice Anfield defender Daniel Agger to the San Siro. Gourcuff is currently on loan to Bordeaux.

Blackburn boss Paul Ince is looking at Liverpool's Swedish reserve midfielder Astrit Adjarevic after he was told he could leave Anfield.
The youngster was part of the FA Youth Cup-winning set-up but has failed to grab a place in the senior squad.
Ince is also chasing Egyptian star Ahmed Al-Muhammadi, 21, as he looks to fill David Bentley's boots in January.

Real Madrid are interested in Zaki and so are we apparently.

The agent of Sao Paolo defender Aislan says he expects Liverpool to make an offer for him when the transfer window opens.

It is no secret that Liverpool are in some serious financial trouble and news from Spain is that Barcelona are ready to test Liverpool with a huge bid for Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres. the figures mentioned are around 82mil to 100mil for the pair.

Fernando Cavenaghi, currently playing for Ligue 1 team Bordeaux, is reportedly being chased by new Tottenham Hotspurs manager Harry Redknapp in addition to Premiership rivals Liverpool.
