Funny that you mention Crouch who's heading is woeful in the same post as saying that because the Brazilian is 6ft4 he will be good in the air! :D
Surely Crouch is a prime example of the fact that height does not make you good in the air??
FFS Owen is about a foot shorter than Crouch but far better in the air.
We will find it very hard to replace Hyypia,in fact its gonna be almost impossible IMO.Hes not just great in the air, overall hes been a great all round consistant defender for us.

Crouch had to head the ball into the goal and he always missed , as for the defender , he's job is to clear the ball away so i think he should be fine , John Carew and Jan Koller are tall players who are excellent in the air , yes it will be difficult to replace hypia in his prime and for the price we signed him for , virtually immpossible , to get a top class defender for anything less than 10 million today .

TH just because he is tall it does'nt meant he will good a defending high balls. He needs to be tough and be able to contest with 13 stone of muscle flying through the air at him.
Of course being tall helps but it does't make a defender great in the air and a nailed on success!
I dont want him...Lucas has put me off everything Brazilian...apart from their hot women! :D

From the BBC Sport gossip column:

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez will offer £10m plus out-of-favour winger Jermaine Pennant for Wigan's Ecuadorian attacking midfielder Antonio Valencia. (News of the World)

Fulham and Stoke are both plotting to make a bid for Liverpool centre-back Sami Hyypia. (News of the World)

I can't say I'd trust the News of the World, but Valencia would certainly be an improvement on Pennant...

^Yeah but surely Rafa's not thinking of replacing Kuyt and what would that do to Babel?

Attacking midfielder? We need wingers , can't say valencia is that good , prefer kuyt over him anyday . Valencia runs around with no end product , occasionally gets the odd goal or so but not often enough , crossing is poor as well . Save the money stick with kuyt if not sign a out and out right winger , arshavin would be a good shot , he wants to play for a premier club in the champs league , he rejected spurs , it was out in the papers yesterday i think

Liverpool Could Renew Their Bid To Sign Shakhtar Donetsk’s Srna If Pennant Moves?

Liverpool could rekindle their interest in Shakhtar Donetsk winger Darijo Srna if forgotten-man Jermaine Pennant leaves Anfield in January.

The Reds, according to Srna's agent, Igor Stimac, had failed in their bid in the summer for the 26-year-old versatile right-sided Croatian international.

Stimac said: "Liverpool came for him in August, but Rinat Akhmetov, the president of Shakhtar, rejected them. He is a very rich man and it is obvious that he does not need the money, so we will see."

Nevertheless, Rafa Benitez’s side now have ample resources on the flanks, but if former England U-21 international Pennant, who has been recently linked with Portsmouth after summer speculation on the link-up with Blackburn, moves in search of regular first-team football to get himself in England seniors reckoning, it could present the Merseysiders with a situation wherein they could renew their effort to sign Srna, who has 61 caps for his country.

25-year-old former Birmingham City and Arsenal player, Pennant has only made one start this season, that coming in the Carling Cup win against Crewe and could be open to a move away from Liverpool in January.

Can't say that I've seen him play, but apparently this guy's highly rated.

Take it this is the Srna that has played in Italy for Inter ?

He is more a wingback than a winger so wouldnt be direct replacement for Pennant. But is a top player and would be a significant improvement on Arbeloa imo.
If its the same player he looked good in the euros as well, thought he might of been older than 26 if am honest though.

He looks old , he's a good freekick taker and he can dribble well . Yes a step up from arbeloa and he can play in a variety of positions , if we sign him , and the left backs are still not performing i think rafa might consider putting arbeloa there

West Ham plan fire sale of players as crisis bites

West Ham are preparing to sell as many as eight senior players during the January transfer window, but they remain adamant that the current turmoil in the Icelandic economy will not threaten the club’s financial future.

Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, the West Ham owner, was forced to stand down on Monday as chairman of Landsbanki after Iceland’s second-largest bank was nationalised, with reports last night suggesting he had lost up to £360 million.

It is, however, known that a number of consortiums are now circling Upton Park after registering their interest in a potential takeover.

Gudmundsson insists that his long-term commitment to the club remains strong and, after a summer of a transfer activity that was characterised by an effort to restructure the wage bill, West Ham admit that they want to further reduce the size of the squad to below 30 players.

The club have raised £18.8 million since July through the sales of John Pantsil, George McCartney, Anton Ferdinand and Bobby Zamora and will aim to further reduce their wage bill by selling players who have failed to make an impact.

The club would listen to offers for Danny Gabbidon, Hayden Mullins, Nigel Quashie, Calum Davenport, James Collins, Jonathan Spector, Lee Bowyer and Luis Boa Morte. It was already felt that the squad was far too big under Alan Curbishley and new manager Gianfranco Zola is determined to have quality rather than quantity.

It is understood that there will be no pressure on Zola to sell any player he wants to keep and the club remain confident that they can challenge for a place in the Premier League’s top six.

West Ham chief executive Scott Duxbury yesterday said that Gudmundsson had invested a net total of £40 million in players to “create a squad capable of challenging in the top half of the Premier League”.

Duxbury added: “Mr Gudmundsson remains fully committed to the success of this football club and building on the excellent start made by Gianfranco Zola.

“The position of Landsbanki has absolutely no effect on West Ham United and Mr Gudmundsson’s ownership of the club. Mr Gudmundsson is an investor with a large portfolio, of which Landsbanki was just part. He is not looking to sell the club.”

The Court of Arbitration for Sport, meanwhile, have boosted West Ham’s hopes of appealing the Football Association’s independent tribunal ruling in favour of Sheffield United over the Carlos Tevez affair.

West Ham have submitted a legal document which argues that they have not had the chance of appeal and CAS have responded by allowing a preliminary hearing to decide if they have jurisdiction.

Sheffield United do not want to participate in West Ham’s appeal, but they have been given until the end of the week to provide the name of an arbiter.

Matthieu Reeb, the secretary-general of CAS, had previously indicated that the appeal could only be heard if Sheffield United agreed to participate in the process. The independent arbitration tribunal that ruled in favour of Sheffield United last week adjourned a meeting to determine the timetable for assessing the level of compensation.

The Yorkshire club had initially suggested a figure of £30 million, but it is understood they are preparing to increase that claim.

Alongside their appeal to CAS, West Ham will demand a forensic examination of the Sheffield United’s accounts when the tribunal reconvenes. There is a feeling that the real losses from relegation might be very different from the claim that has been made.

I wouldn't want us to buy a single player from West Ham, except for maybe Ashton.
