Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has added Spain's David Silva to his wish-list, after tiring of 'ludicrous' demands for other summer targets.
And Benitez will be helped in his pursuit of the midfielder as his chief scout is the player's mentor. The player is in the Spain team that has taken the European Championship by storm with a 100 per cent record so far.
But Silva's Valencia club are in financial trouble, and have made it known that they are prepared to sell him and fellow Spain star David Villa.
Benitez has grown tired of the sky-high price tags placed on the wide players he has targeted - with Aston Villa's Gareth Barry, Albert Riera of Espanyol and Newcastle's James Milner all vastly overpriced in his opinion.
After a discreet approach from Valencia, Benitez has expressed firm interest in the left-winger.
The big stumbling block is the fee, with Valencia asking in excess of £20million.
But Benitez believes he has two trump cards.
Firstly, Valencia have to sell because of their money worries, and while they will demand a huge fee, they are almost certain to settle for less.
The La Liga club have to fork out around £20m a month in loans and interest payments on their new stadium.
nd while publicly they insist they do not want to lose any of their big stars, privately they have contacted several clubs to gauge interest in Silva and Villa.
Liverpool are also keen on Villa, but with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea circling, the striker will be out of any Anfield price range.
But the Reds have a strong connection with Silva that could tip the scales.
Anfield chief scout Eduardo Macia worked with Silva as a youngster at Valencia.
Macia was a youth team coach when the player broke through to their B team. He helped Silva get a loan to feeder club Eibar, which set the winger on the road to glory.
Silva remembers that, and still keeps in touch with his old pal Macia.

CRISTIANO RONALDO last night uttered the words Manchester United have been dreading: I hope to join Real Madrid in the next few days.
Just minutes after Ronaldo and his Portugal team-mates crashed out of Euro 2008, the winger finally broke his silence over his Old Trafford future — and left no doubt where his heart lies.
Following the last-eight defeat to Germany, he said: “In the next few days there could be news.
“The possibilities of me going to Madrid are great but it does not depend on me.
"I know there is a concrete offer on the table, now let’s see if we can reach a deal in the next days.
"Everyone knows what I want. I have many desires and in the next days they will become clear.”
Ronaldo and his agent Jorge Mendes know Real will table a world-record £80million bid and put enormous pressure on United to accept.
And the next step could be for Ronaldo to go on strike if United refuse to do a deal — as revealed in SunSport.
The former Porto winger fanned the flames by describing a move to Real as "a dream, a step forward".
He added: "For me it's a very good opportunity. As Scolari says, this only happens once."
And asked when he decided he wanted to quit Old Trafford, Ronaldo revealed: "Some time ago, before this competition.
"I didn't want to say anything because we were in competition and these are important decisions."
Ronaldo claimed that leaving United would be difficult but added: "I think it could be good for both of us".
United will be enraged by his comments, having already made it clear they have no intention of selling their prize asset.
Their relationship with Madrid has already hit rock bottom.
They lodged a formal complaint to FIFA over the way Real have openly tried to lure Ronaldo to the Spanish capital.
United’s position has been the same from the start — Ronaldo, 23, signed a five-year contract with them last year and he will remain their player.
Boss Alex Ferguson has always insisted they have no intention of selling him.
And he revealed the club’s owners, the Glazer family, would be willing to let him “rot in the stands” rather than move to the Bernabeu.
Ronaldo will now undergo an operation after being dumped out of Euro 2008.
He added: “I have a small problem with my foot.
“I’ve been playing with it for three months. I’m going to have the operation straightaway.”

Selling them is the best thing that could happen to them, and I hope he stays. 120 mil added to Manchesters summer bank account could make things bad fast.

I know this is nothing to do with our rumour mill so please dont hunt me down and destroy me Debo...i mean misty![]()
But why is mu losing there star player a bad thing![]()
No matter how much money they get, they have to replace him with someone with similar ability and who could make the team be able to play in the same defensive counter attacking way.
Name me that player...no matter how much money ?
