Torres master of the universe (world) - Free kick expert

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Liverpool ace Fernando Torres, Barcelona stars Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi, plus Juventus captain Alessandro del Piero have all signed on for this year's Free Kick Masters event in Texas.

Free Kick Masters is an all-star competition unique to the world of soccer as the only event that features elite international players in a direct shots-on-goal competition. It also features the largest single player event purse - the player crowned "Free Kick Master" will receive $1 million in cash and prizes and the "Golden Goalkeeper" title winner will receive $500,000 in cash and prizes.

In addition to Ronaldinho, Deco, and Del Piero, other free kickers expected to appear are, Fernando Torres, Rafael Marquez, Jared Borgetti, Juninho, Eddie Lewis, Jozy Altidore, Sun Ji, and Sun Xiang. The stellar list of goalkeepers includes Oliver Kahn, Francesco Toldo, and Kasey Keller.

With a format similar to the NBA's Three-Point Shootout, and MLB's Home Run Derby, Free Kick Masters is a skills-based international soccer competition featuring some of the world's top-rated free kickers competing against some of the world's premier goalkeepers. This free kick shootout is designed to determine the world's "Free Kick Master" and "Golden Goalkeeper". The last Free Kick Masters was a sold out event held in Marbella, Spain broadcast to over 30 countries with an estimated 110 million viewers.

Camelot Island Entertainment (CIE), who presents the event, has signed an agreement with Fox Sports International Distribution Ltd. to distribute the 2008 Free Kick Masters event to a worldwide audience.
"This is one of the most significant developments in the history of international soccer," observed a CIE representative. "Other than the World Cup, there is no greater collection of superstar talent at any one place, at any one time, than the Free Kick Masters. The fact that this international soccer event is taking place in the U.S. speaks to the growing popularity of the sport and its ability to break down borders and unite cultures."

The "Free Kick Master" and the "Golden Goalkeeper"? LOL

Like seriously, I'm laughing here. I can just imagine an announcer call that out in a cheesy American way. Sounds like one of those mad Asian comedy films like Shoalin Soccer or some sh*t.

And I never knew Torres was a free kick specialist.

Interesting, I didnt know Torres took free kicks ?

Why isn't Pepe one of the Goalkeepers ??? Oliver Kahn, Francesco Toldo, and Kasey Keller I would fancy MY chances against any of them in fact I would be confident if all three were in net at the same time ! :D

Minues the cheesy titles and quotes, me being American I see this as a good idea.

We tried to have a game in here, you guys opposed.  So why not let us just have this competition?  It is extremely hard to get not one but TWO foreign teams into the country just to play a game, so with a tournament like this you only need a handful of players and not a staff and team.  I don't see this as one of the most important parts of international football, but for those of us who don't have the luxury of watching our favorite players live this is perfect.

As for Torres taking free kicks....what?  Any why isn't Beckham doing this event, I find that strange.

In Liverpool's hierarchy he doesn't that often, does he?

I do remember though him in Anoeta playing for Atletico kicking the ball in certain positions, kind of give strenght to the ball rather than place it it was his style. Goodish at that, but not his forte. He has scored free kicks, though.

Yes but do not say he'll never triumph in that compo, or you'll be doomed. I tell you from my experience  :D

This is an effort to promote the game in the States with players who are identifiable.  This isn't americanization of the game, it is a f@cking promotion.  You better be scared because the big bad americans are coming to take over your game.   :D The sky is falling, the sky is falling.  Nobody here gives a toss about footie.  Only the hardcore fans really take notice.  Most americans don't have the attention span to appreciate it.

The more fans it attracts here, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

Holy :censored:. This going to be in my hometown!

Being 8,000 Kilometers away from Liverpool, I thought it'd take another lifetime till I saw Torres in person. I'm gonna be damn proud wearing my Torres shirt when I go to this.

I've never heard of this until today. Thanks to you, I won't miss it!

I am glad they are brining actual stars, I wouldn't have been suprised if they brought in a bunch of burn out players who need extra cash, hell if I was even close to Dallas I would probably go.
