End of season review - Good or bad?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

While we still have a couple of games left to play, the season for all intents and purposes ended tonight. How was it for you? Did the earth move or are you still frustrated waiting for a climax that never arrived?

For me, even more important then our slightly disappointing season on the pitch, has been the battles off the pitch. Rafa apparently out the door at one stage has fought back and now appears safe (for the moment) while the two owners have shown a distinct lack of grace, tact, timing, knowledge and most importantly a lack of money.

Back on the pitch we started the season in good style and raised hopes that this could be our season. I fancied us to win the league this season, but I suppose I would have been happy with a decent challenge for the title. We actually made top spot for a week but the rarified air seemed to have a bad effect and we began the slow slide until we were almost relieved when we eventually secured 4th place.

Injury to Agger which unbelievably has kept him out for the rest of the season has played a significant part in our decline, but the lack of a couple more top quality players has become more obvious as the season has gone on. Certainly some of our players have never managd to reach the heights of previous years and one or two need to be moved on quickly as they are just not good enough for a club with title ambitions.

On the plus side we signed Torres who has been unbelievably successful this season, Masch finally signed and we seem to have made another good signing in Skrtel.

The downside I suppose was Voronin after early promise, finally achieved the mediocrity that everyone seemed to predict for him. Riise struggled with his form all year and topped it off with a terrific o.g. that probably cost us a CL Final. Finnan seems to have aged very quickly and from being Mr Consistancy has now become Mr Average.

Then we have the players that no-one seems able to agree upon :- Kuyt, Crouch, Benayoun , Lucas,Pennant, Arbeloa, Babel and Alonso. Maybe this is the problem we have too many players that don't or havn't proven to all of us that they deserve their place in the team, or that there is not better out there that we could buy for similar money.

The CL was our saving grace this season, without it I think Rafa would have been under intense pressure and may even have gone. It enabled us to prolong our season if only by a few weeks but also gave us some great games with the highlight for me the win against Arsenal.

Now I suppose its all about getting Hicks and Gillett out the door as quickly and quietly as we can, before bringing in the new players that will give us renewed faith that "next season  we will win the league".

Players of the season for me were :- Torres,Masch, Gerrard and Carra, with honorable mentions for Reina and also for big Sami for doing a great job of rolling back the years.

I thought Skrtel and Babel have shown enough to hope they will be good additions to the squad with Lucas showing glimpses that he may take a little longer but will be a cracking player soon enough.

I was sad to see Sissoko go, he was a good player that took a lot of criticism this season (some of it justified), but I think we may come to regret selling him.

Highlight of the season for me was Torres goal against Arsenal. I was just so happy when that goal went in.

See, despite our spat the other night, I know you are as talented as they come when it comes to your own views.

For me tonight it confirmed what I have always thought, at the end it is down to the players.  It is down to them. It is easier to talk big then it is to act. Tonight they failed to act. When I said earlier that I am as gutted that we failed to act and you get the "we did well" attitude. The arguments start, we deserved a result. No we didnt. I thought, after watching our team throughout the season we got what we deserved. We did not deserve to beat chelsea. At times it was embarrasing. And not for the first time this season. This season I have seen for myself, mascha, gerrard, torres, carra, reina they are the core of the team. As much as I have stuck up for alonso, he just hasnt cut it. He has a lot of supporters but has let them all down. Im a supporter of rafa but even I can admit, he is living on borrowed time. Torres says he was swapped, rafa says hamstring.  When the player contradicts the manager all ears are pricked open.

not to go into a full breakdown but i fail to see how we have improved in the past four years

4th place and no trophies is not where i expected us to be after his 4 seasons in charge, and lets be honest about this, this is not down to the owners

I was just so happy when that goal went in.

There's just something about that sentence which makes me smile.

I'm dissapointed with the season considering how hopeful i was before it started, but to be honest when i watched the very first game against Villa i just had a very strong feeling that we were in for another rocky ride. I think one of the best things about tonights result is that we know exactly where we are lacking in the quality department. Unfortunately none of us have a clue what's going on with these w@nkers at the top which is very worrying. The thing is we're really not that far of the top 2 we just need the cash for some top drawer players.

Torres has been amazing as we all know as as Masch. I don't know about Lucas to be honest, he looks very average but obviously has something in his locker. Scary Skrtl was a great signing looks like a top centre half. Babel is a player i'm really excited about, we payed a lot of money for him but thats the way it is these days, he's been frustrating to watch at times but he's done some things including his goal tonight against Chelsea which really fill me with hope and expectation.

One of my main dissapointments of the season has been Alonso, where has it all gone wrong, one of my favourite players and a much respected player in the premiership, the guy has just lost it altogether it's really a sad sight, it's sad to say but i just hope he has a good Euro campaign in the summer so we can get a good fee for him off one of the spanish sides, he's just not good enough anymore unfortunately.

This season was a huge failure for me.  But I don't blame Rafa or the players, I blame our pathetic owners.  Hopefully next year DIC will take over and bring some professionalism along with them.  Once we have stability back at the top, then it will transfer on to the pitch and we will enjoy a successful season.

I am a big Rafa fan but I can't see him surviving a trophyless season next year. I expect him to play "full strength" sides in the domestic cups unless we are in the top 2.  Not saying that an FA Cup or League Cup would really be sufficient, but he knows he HAS to win SOMETHING and if you try your hardest the League Cup is probably our best chance.  Also, I think if we finish top 2 and within 4 or 5 points next year, that would be enough to get my seal of approval for the 09/10 season.

Same here. Huge failure indeed. The only good thing about this season is Torres. We should start loading few more quality players. Can't stand the obscure cheap signing just to fill in the space...get what i mean? One more thing, it bothers me though, a club as big as us having trouble funding the managers to buy class players compared to the barcodes , spurs etc. I mean our marketing plan sucks. I live in south east asia, and all i see is Man uniturd and chelshit touring and promoting their club here and around asia. I didn't see Liverpool Fc around....what the f@ck have you been doing Parry? Other people would see us as a big club with small ambitions... :(

Gutted, Disappointed...........think everyone feels the same just now, should've done much better domestically, good run in Europe and that unlucky OG at home is what probs cost us in the end, not pointing the finger at John Arne though, these things happen.

On the other hand though we are a young team, with Quality over the park, a few more additions and a bit of luck against the bigger teams we could be in with a chance over the next couple of years, Babels shown enough to me over the season to fill me with hope that he could be class player for years for us.

Just wondered what everyone else thinks about Gerrards role in the team at the moment, I mean obviously he's Mr Liverpool and makes us tick, and he's great at supporting Torres against anyone outside the top 4, but against the likes of Man Ure, Arsenal and Chelski he doesn't seem to be all that effective as he doesn't have the space to run in to, would rather see him playing deeper and making those driving runs so he can influence the game more.

Need to get rid of the players that just seem to make up the numbers now, Itandje, Finnan, Riise, Alonso, Yossi (bit harsh after his assist last night), Pennant(Again I like him but I want someone explosive who'll score match winning goals on the wing), Kewell, Voronin.
