The ones that got away - Players we nearly signed

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Just wandering how many players you can think of who we nearly signed but didn't. Certainly over the last ten years there have been so many that our brilliant managers have TURNED DOWN for whatever reason.

For example, didn't we have first option on Roy Keane but Souness turned him down?

Seem to recall that we could have also have signed both Gascoigne and Cantona at various (early) stages in their careers. And Michael Laudrup, although we missed out on him because we had too many foreginers already on the books at that time.

More recently, Lee Bowyer, Nicholas Anelka, Freddie Ljungberg spring to mind. We also were close to signing Christiano Ronaldo but Manure outbid us at the last minute.

Which players can you think of?

I wouldn't have minded Keane and Cantona, but they became scum so lets not worry ourselves about it

Anelka's the only one really that springs to mind. Bowyer at the time would have been great but it didn't happen and with hindsight it looks like the right decision.

You have to wonder what might have happened though, had we signed Keane and Cantona

Bowyer seems to have become less of a player since his court case. With all of the attention and media spotlight, who wouldn't?

I think Anekla would have fared much better than Diouf as he did score a lot of goals for a very poor Man City side. Can't say the same about Diouf, out-of-position or not.

it'll be intresting to see how the GH flops play under Benitez. Biscan seems to improved already.
