LOL

Well, I just grew up playing the things since the ZX and Atari systems. I've owned most consoles there's been released, and if you ask me what the pick of the bunch has been from 20 or so years of experience, I'd have to say it's a choice between the SNES or NES. I think SNES would just beat it. The mid to late 90's were easily the best period for games ever. It's not about billion pound companies. It's just about being a fan of particular franchises like Mario, Zelda, you name it, just what you grew up with. If the games are good on a particular console, I'll own what has the best games.

No chance, TP had no where near enough side quests, they did a great development for the characters (hence why minda is so good) but its still not as good as OoT. OoT is my fav game of all time, it just cant be beat

Debatable. TP made up for that with a more expansive map and had more dungeons and were bigger too. Plus the transition between the Twilight realm where you transformed into a wolf just gave the game a far better artistic spin on things as opposed to OTT's time travel. TP is the better game, but OOT will always be remembered as being the fonder of the two because of how long ago it was released and it was the first time we'd seen Zelda in 3d. I thought it's sequel, Majora's Mask, eclipsed it also. That was a brilliant game, and very underrated even to this day.

I can agree with you on Majora's Mask, not that it eclipsed it, but it was a great game that was underated.

TP's expansive map wasnt that exciting for me, you never had a need to go outside, and most of it you could just run past, you look at majoras mask you had to go everywhere if you wanted the masks. I loved having to turn into a wolf, that was great, but i died for me, my favorite part of tp was the start, when you had to become a wolf, when you could start switching, it lost its magic. But the real reason i belive OoT was better because, it hadnt been done bofore, it was just perfect. While TP was great, but it still feels the same

Edit: TP's final fight was amazing thought (albit easy)

Lets put the cat among the pigeons with a bit of a 'killer question'.

What was the top 3 games for each of you that read this thread, that was the 'defining' game for you, on any platform from any time?

I'll start.....

The first game that completely blew me away was, technically, the first proper western release in the series, Final Fantasy VII. It was the first game that pulled me in and wouldn't let go until I unearthed all of its secrets (beat the Emeralds and obtained Knights of the Round Materia Summon, 60 hours play still on an original PSone Mem card!). It was also the first game that I remember that actually made me feel gutted that someone had died in a game (Aeris! I wanted to kill Sephiroth so much after that!) and wanted to avenge it. The ending sequence was a little dissapointment, but the game as a whole more than made up for it.

For me, the second one was the original Metal Gear Solid on PSone. It was a proper 'grown up' game which at the time the PSone was doing so well at bringing games to the 20+'s. It had a gripping storyline which asked questions of itself and brought some cracking ideas to gaming (Psycho Mantis making your pad move and reading your memory card was quality, while the Sniper Wolf battle made you feel genuinely bad for killing an in game character). It kept the surprises coming and while some would say that it is heavy on dialogue, for me that adds to the atmosphere. Best bit in game - covering behind a crate from a soldier, ready to pounce and break his neck - until I sneeze, which alerts him to where I am! Frantic scramble for the cardboard box!

Thirdly, this is a bit of a departure from the other two, has to be Burnout Takedown. I have NEVER had so much unadulterated instant fun on a game as I have during my first few sessions on Road Rage. How much fun is it to crash into other cars, causing then to become a total wreck? A hell of a lot, that's how much!!

That's my list - for now. I've briefly played GOW and I have to admit I want to buy a 360 just for that. My list may change in the future............

Id say mine are as follows.

Command and Conquer red alert. (pc)
This had me hooked after about 5 minutes, smooth gameplay , great missions and then all them truly brilliant skirmishes, id still play it now.

Championship Manager
When I first played this -it was on the amiga 1200 and I bought one for this game alone...hooked would be an understatement lol -from Kevin Keegan player manager to THIS

Gran Turismo 4
Never have I put as much time and effort into a game -this beast was just the dogs! Probably becos I had 90% completed and my son deleted it off the memory card , so I had to start all over again, and i got there in the end. :buttrock

Others like Mario Kart, Goldeneye and Resident evil came close too.

Jet Set Willy for the old rubber keyboard ZX spectrum - what they managed to coax out of this 48k machine over its lifespan was amazing.

Already been listed, but the first incarnation of Championship Manager - Fantastic!

Gears of War - I have in over 30 years of playing all types of console and computer never seen a game which equals the graphics, feel and gameplay of this.

My fav gaming series is Project Gotham Racing, I love racing games and the online play is awesome.

For my the gaming of late is the best in my lifetime so far, don't get me wrong I've played games from around 1984 and it's not the graphics of games these days but the ability to play people online, I used to get bored playing games against the computer after about 2 months where games these days can last for years of it has a good online community, PGR3 is a prime example as I played PGR3 for nearly two years (since it came out in Nov 2005).

Very hard question.

I'd say the one true game that has to come first for me is Mario 64. The hype surrounding the game has yet to be equaled. It set a standard that only to this year now, is to be matched or possibly surpassed.

Second would be a game that has defined a whole generation, and certainly the bread and butter of the current generation today, and that's the FPS genre. That game was Doom. I never played the original shareware way back in '93 when it first came out, but I wanted to badly. I never had a PC, so I had to wait for the SNES version of this game. This and the PSX, PC counterparts, took up the following few years of my life until Goldeneye was released. This for me, is the best FPS on a console ever made. I even find it hard to separate it from being possible the best game ever made. It was almost perfect apart from the framerate.

In between, I'd have a hard choice between the likes of Resident Evil, FF7, any of the Zelda games, Killer Instinct, Secret of Mana and even niche games like Wave Race and Pilot Wings. But they aren't genre defining.

The Third game is one that defined the beat'em up genre. Street Fighter 2. This game owned my life when I was a kid for a few years, and it still plays class today.

Bloody hell! A question like that needs it own Retro thread all to it's self!

Without giving it too much thought (as i'd keep changing my picks) i'll have a go. Makes sense to pick a game from each of the 80s, 90s and the noughties.

80s - Has to be Manic Miner on the Speccy for me. It was the first game along with Jetpac that i got properly hooked on. I was only 8/9 years old at the time but my mate who was a couple of years older got his Speccy in 1982. Played it for hours on end and that was me hooked onto games from there on in.

90s - Has to be Aliens-Predator on the Atari Jaguar. Dissapointing console but this game was absolutely amazing. Used to play it with the the lights off, the game was so atmosperic and spooky that the other people watching me play the game were jumping out of their skins as well as me!

00s - I know it was around for a good few years previous but Championship Manager 3 which must have come out around 1999/00 season was awesome and a massive step-up from the previous versions. I don't actually play the game anymore coz i think it has got worse since the best versions between then and 2003 (i think)
