Liverpool target to stay at Porto

06:48 17/07/2007

Ricardo Quaresma is unlikely to join Liverpool Football Club this summer.

Reds manager Rafael Benitez wants to continue his summer spending spree with the addition of the Portugal international winger, yet Porto are confident they will keep hold of the player for at least another season.

"We will do everything that is possible to keep him, although we can't guarantee it," president Jorge Pinto da Costa told Record. "We have refused excellent offers, more than those for other players from other clubs.

"In principle, we think we will not lose any more players."

This is still the transfer I would love to see and would then make me extremely happy about the summer signings. Obviously I think another centre back would still be needed.....and a left back!!

Italian ace eyes Reds switch    Thu, Jul 19 2007 09:52
Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini claims he is considering a move to Liverpool after a fall-out with new coach Claudio Ranieri.
The left-back has been angry at the Turin club's reluctance to discuss a new contract and reports in Italy claim he could move on this summer.
Chiellini is contracted to 2011, having penned a deal last October, but feels he deserves an improved offer having helped Juve win promotion back into Serie A.

The 22-year-old defender was the subject of a bid from Liverpool earlier this summer, believed to be in the region of £5million, but Juventus rejected the offer and are thought to want £7million.

The player's representative revealed: "It is obvious that if he receives limited time in the side next term then other options will have to be looked at.

"I am sure that if an official offer came from Liverpool, it would be a tempting solution."

Liverpool have reportedly been beaten by Atletico Madrid to the signature of long-term target Simao Sabrosa.

Mixed reports in Portugal have revealed both clubs lodged a bid for the Benfica player, a man Rafa Benitez has wanted for three consecutive summers.

According to Correio da Manha, Liverpool made a £15million offer for the former Barcelona star, nearly double what they have gone to in the past.

However, Atletico have beaten The Reds to the punch with an earlier bid of around £13.5million, and it is believed Simao has not joined Benfica's tour of Romania in order to tie up a deal in Spain.

The news will come as a blow to Benitez, who still only has the one option for an out-and-out right winger in Jermaine Pennant.

Meanwhile, Atletico midfielde maestro Maniche is hopeful Simao does join Los Colchoneros, after they missed out on fellow Portuguese star Ricardo Quaresma.

"Simão is different to Quaresma," Maniche told Marca.

"He does not dribble in such a way, but he has more experience. Also he would be very welcome.

"The two would be very important reinforcements, without a doubt, they would give more quality to Athletico Madrid."

Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze is ready to go to court to ensure his dream move to Liverpool goes through.

The Argentinia is livid with comments from his manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who said earlier in the week: "I can assure you that Liverpool will not be getting Gabriel Heinze."

Rafa Benítez is keen to add another Spanish player to the Liverpool ranks after showing an interest in Real Madrid Castilla star Javi García.

zoom - galleria  The Reds boss is a keen admirer of the 20-year-old central midfielder and is ready to make a move if the player refuses a new contract at the Bernabéu.

García is a key figure on the Madrid B team and is also being watched by Mallorca, Getafe and Deportivo, all of whom have made contact with his agent, Manuel García Quilón.

Despite another impressive season, García has been told that he will not be promoted to Bernd Schuster's first-team squad and is unhappy.

While Adrián González, Jordi Codina, Rubén De la Red, Alberto Bueno, and Esteban Granero have been moved up, the Spain Under-19 international is set to spend another season in the B team.

Madrid have offered García a new one-year deal, but that is likely to fall on daef ears and the quartet of clubs are now ready to pounce.

Benítez wants to sign the poweful midfielder and then loan him out to a Spanish or English top flight club in order to gain experience at the highest level.

The trio of clubs from la Primera are prepared to promise García first-team football straight away and that could prove to be decisive.
