Rafa said yesterday we are definately in the market for a new winger, so who is realistically available? Also, who would be a genuine improvement? Of the names touted so far:

Malouda: Chelsea bound Frenchman  (they do well at Anfield)  who seems intent on learning a new currency. Approx £15m

Quaresma: Lightweight Portugese showpony who couldn't cut it in Spain Approx £11m

Danni Alves: Forward bombing wingback and Champ Manager favourite but would he be exposed in the lightening paced EPL? Approx £18m

Any one else?

Once again, it's panic stations because our rivals are acting the big cheese and throwing around cash like it's monopoly money! Once again people are looking at the individual player they are signing and panicking. Once again they are overlooking their own foresight and forgetting that it takes cohesion as well as quality to progress. Remember, Chelsea done the same thing last season, only they had relativly little success. They signed the big guns in Ballack and Shevshenko, and people  were in awe of this so called "unstoppable force" they had because of the players they possessed. Personally, I think the signing of Tevez to United won't make them any better of a team than what they were last season. If anything it could upset their ballance. It's certainly upsetting their bank ballance, and needlessly so. They are being greedy now. I can sense a fall. At least our problems are modest. We all know what area we needed to improve on from last season, and already we have. United seem intent on improving on areas that they don't have a problem with from last season. IMO, they need to spend big at the back and in holding possitions. If they do this, I'd be worried. As of now, they are spending on attacking players, which for me is a laughable waste of cash. It will just give us more ammo to hurl abuse at them when we do win the league.

???

they need a forward... they need a winger.... they needed cover for their midfield.... they signed all their targets imo...

why would they want to sign a defender ? they already have the best back line in the league... and some excellent cover in heinze and w.brown and even oshea...

chelsea is a different story as far as im concerned... they signed a striker and a central midfielder while they usually playeda 4-5-1 .. both players were not needed and at the time seemed to have been signed just for thesake of it... they had to change their formation to accomodate their new sinngs and that messed up their balance and made them look clueless at times ...lacking width and creativity and most of all flair !

our problems are modest ? we are need atleast 3 quality signings... modest isnt a word id use... if you think torres is the answer to our problems then im sorry but... he isnt...

while i agree we have improved our squad with only one signing... i still think that we are some way short of being able to mount a serious challenge...

It will be a 12 month loan deal for £4Mil at which point they have the option to sign him on a permanent. It will be £35 Mil altogether.

We are reaching that "option" stage with Javier soon.

I think we need one more CB and CF. I like Vincent Kompany and Robinho.

We need to move in fast as Utd seems to have caught everyone napping with their raid on the transfer market.

Chelsea must be wondering what to do next given their very ordinary recruits so far and the African nations cup taking their finest in January.

We then have Arsenal swapping Henry for Silva.

No one wants Utd taking Tevez because quite honestly, and it hurts me to say it, it will take a mammoth effort, not to mention the spending, to get near them with Tevez in the ranks as well.

In my opinion we are still a few top class players short of having a chance at the title but we can expect to get past Chelsea if not Utd this season.

With more quality coming in to Anfield my hopes will be raised and without question everyone needs to up their game significantly in light of Utds summer spending bonanza.

SWP?? Clearly he hasn't set the world at fire at Chelsea so what would he give us?

Mancini is very talented, 2 footed and lightning quick but the success of imports from italian football to EPL is not high

Is there any winger out there that has been relatively unheralded so far, but might be available at the right price?

In Spain i have listened today taht Liverpool will offer 20M € for Quaresma. Atletico de Madrid wants this player too. Real Madrid will sign Robben or Malouda, and Alves is near Chelski.

For me, we've solved (or tried to solve) the biggest problem from last season, in that we needed a player with pace up front capable of putting the ball in the net.  Our wide players were heavily criticised, but really there were very few games where our team as a collective didn't create chances, or half-chances for the forwards.  A new striker was the priority by a mile, hopefully Torres will be the difference.

Admittedly wingers would be our next priority.  Allegedly we've had bids rejected for Mancini and Quaresma.  There isn't anyone in the Premiership who'd be of good enough quality and available.  SWP and Pederson have been mentioned, but I reckon Benitez will again dip into the foreign market instead.  I'd put money on one of those 2 guys that Benitez has already allegedly bid for being our next signing.

I'd have loved Tevez, but I doubt we'd spend any more big money on a striker.  I'd also love Alves, but Benitez doesn't seem to be after him this summer.

Why not?

From what i've seen of the wingers being touted, I'd love to see Quaresma come in. He may be a bit of a gamble, but that's where we're at - there are hardly any brilliant wingers on the market who are guaranteed to deliver, and for me, wingers are a mercurial bunch anyway -  better a wildcard than a reliable trundler like Zenden.

I also think Rafa's learnt his lesson with Gonzo - trying to pick up a top-class winger on the cheap isn't easy, especially with the focus in the Prem going to 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1 top wingers are priceless now.

I'm a bit cool on Torres, but happy to trust Rafa. But having spent that we might as well go for broke. These 3 will do for me:

Heinze £5m
Owen £9m
Quaresma £13m

that's £27m outlay. We could cash in Cisse and Bellamy for £14m, which leaves us a £13m outlay on top of Torres. With those players I reckon we're in with a serious chance of the Prem next season.

because his price continues to rise and might cost up to 20 mill, and we have already spent 30 million pounds between Lucas, Leto, and Torres.

On Quaresma, Just read in the Echo Rick Parry descibed a bid being turned down as "Nonsense". I would love to see him here, or someone of that mould.
