Gerrard - New contract

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

STEVEN GERRARD will give Liverpool the perfect Euro boost — by pledging the rest of his career to the club.

The Kop skipper, 26, has agreed terms on a new £120,000- a-week contract to keep him at Anfield for life.

That will see him pocket £6million a year and make him the best-paid English player in the Premiership.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez hopes to officially announce the news on the eve of the Champions League final against AC Milan in three weeks.

Liverpool revealed recently that the future of midfield man Gerro, together with stars like Jamie Carragher and Xabi Alonso, would be top of the agenda for new owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

Now the two men have proved as good as their word, with the offer that will make Gerrard the highest-paid player in Liverpool history.

Gerrard’s future has been the subject of speculation in recent years.

*
During the summer of 2004 he was tipped to join Chelsea but, despite going close to moving to Stamford Bridge, he eventually opted to stay put.

A year later, after Gerrard led the Reds to Champions League glory in Istanbul, Chelsea were again close to a £32m swoop — before a late change of heart saw him commit to staying at Anfield, with a new four-year deal.

The England ace offered to give up the captaincy after the controversy but boss Benitez insisted he kept the job.

Last year he insisted he planned to stay at Liverpool until he was no longer wanted. He was already contracted until 2009 but the club’s American owners were determined to keep him at the club for the rest of his career and opened talks over an extended deal.

Negotiations were swiftly agreed and the announcement of a four-year extension will send them into battle in Athens in the highest-possible spirits.

It means Gerrard will equal the pay of Chelsea stars Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack and put the £110,000-a-week five-year deal signed by Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United firmly in the shade.

Its only fair he gets a pay rise, he's got a family to support now. :p  Good news though, glad to see both sides have enough confidence in Liverpools future to get it sorted before the CL FINAL.

I got a baby on the way in 3/4 weeks. I may try and use the same angle for my pay rise. If Stevie needs £120K a week to support his family - so do I. Although he does have two kids, whereas this is my first, so I will take an offer of £60K a week. Fair?

Ask for £80k and use £60k as your fall back figure.  I'm pretty sure you will get it once they hear you have a family  :D

wow, never want to lose Gerrard. I do want him to be paid his worth. But 120k pounds per week? That's just crazy money (in the real world anyway).

120k is not crazy money if the fans pay for the tickets and merchandise. Look at how much producers and actors make for movies. no different. supply and demand.

That's a lot of money. But then, the context of England is crazy when it comes to money this days. And now we seem to have more money. I guess the club wants to award Gerrard's good contribution to the club, and acknowledge the fact he's one of the most important players in the league, and made him an offer according to that.

At least Gerrard deserves it.

For £120k per week he had better stop sulking when he has to play on the right!

It would cost a lot to buy someone anywhere near as good.

Just so people can get an idea, the better the player the better the wages and if you're paying someone £20k a week they're either not too good or will eventually ask for a pay rise.

£120k a week = £6.24m a year
£100k a week = £5.20m a year
£75k a week = £3.90m a year
£50k a week = £3.12m a year
£25k a week = £1.56m a year

I'd happily pay a couple of million a year extra in wages to Stevie G rather than pay someone nowhere near as good but demanding £75k or more a week. And he's worth that in the revenue he brings in - FOUR finals in the past three years excluding Super Cups and Club World Championships. It's a shame we couldn't keep Mikey, I reckon Rafa would have won the league already with his goals

There's bound to be more interest in signing him from Barcelona and possibly still Chelsea, I will be interested in the fees mentioned.
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer
