Sabre, as an aside, correct me if I am wrong, but I'm not sure that "The Young Ones" and the charms of Adrian Edmondson have reached the shores of good ol' Espana, so is your sig really a tribute to looney student punk Vyvyan or something to do with the detractors of your previous sig?  :D

It has reached to Spain. The links are available in e-mule. In my case I watched it in Basque country, in Basque.

To be honest I've realised now that I've watched it in english that most of the injokes are poorly translated. Still, dubbed they were very fun. I loved the "Demolition" chapter.

And what was the other question? ah yeh, my detractors. Yeh, well spotted. Yeh it's a message to them. :D

Just kiddin' -

You are a fan of the Young Ones? Really?

That show was freakin' class. Where else would you have a talking pet rat as a character?

Why are you so surprised? Half my town is fan of "Gazteak" or "los Jovenes" that's the way they're known here.

THe humour is very english though, hard to translate. My fav is Vyvian, I had a friend who was like him.  I like the hyypie too, but I can't stand Rik, the one who said "fascists" all the time :D

This show was famous in the eighties. In Franco times only national shows were shown, and once we recovered the democracy, lots of shows from england were brought to Spain. I remember for instance, Yes, Prime minister, or Rik Mayal as well in the rol of Alan B'astard -- very funny.

I loved the humour, the rat pet you mention, and the sudden rock and roll outbursts in the middle of the chapter!!

Many english shows were shown here.

I remember, as a student, writing a screenplay for an episode of the Young Ones. It was the ultimate show to watch while getting tanked in your flat on cheap booze.

ah the memories....

it was considered a rare treat for us to be allowed to watch the young ones at home. Same goes for Kenny Everett.

safe to say, when you are denied...you crave more. And those two shows provided many a schooltime laugh...or 3 when i were younger  :eyebrow

No, the rat's name was SPG, as found on Wikipedia......

SPG

There was also a regular puppet character, Vyvyan's thickly Glaswegian accented pet hamster, SPG (Special Patrol Group: named after the controversial British police unit). In the pilot Vyvyan responds to Rick's comment that Special Patrol Group 'is a stupid name for a hamster' by naming him Cliff Richard. SPG is a hamster who, like Vyvyan, has a mohawk and a very volatile temper. He apparently likes curries and is a fan of the Jaws movies. In "Demolition", Vyvyan mentions that he starves SPG often because he does not want to spoil him, and tells the flatmates not to feed him. Vyvyan uses Rick's roll-on deodorant on SPG because he seems to be "a bit whiffy" - eliciting protest from SPG, who does not think much of "stinking like a student's armpit." According to Vyvyan, SPG is fond of carrots as he likes to "stick them down his trousers to impress the girls." SPG was often the target of Vyvyan's violence, though SPG attacked Vyvyan at least once. SPG died, much to Vyvyan's despair, during their car crash in the last episode while asleep on the radiator of Vyvyan's yellow Ford Anglia, and was then seen as a puppet angel ascending to Heaven muttering to Vyvyan, "I'll see you later, you little wimp."

I mean, they had a rat who sounded like Billy Connelly!

I loved the episode where Neil became a cop and called over to a house in an attempt to shut down a house party. Some dude answers the door and asks Neil to come in and to "take the tit off the top of your head."

Absolutely blindin' show.

That one was a classic. Steven Fry and Emma Thompsen went on to do rather well for themselves, don't you think?

Indeed, they did.  Were they Young One regulars or were those cameo appearances?
