The fact that Bill Hicks wasn't automatically no1 makes a mockery of such a list.

Mainly i reckon because once he had quit the drink and drugs/smoking he wasnt really very funny. He sort of trned a bit odd and droned on a bit...

in his heyday he was the best barr none, but he went on that little bit long and lost his edge

Its true that Ricky Gervais isn't your bread and butter stand up comic but he is funnier IMO that alot of the top ten on that list.

Also Ricky Gervais did stand up prior to Animals and Politics. He featured alongside the likes of Jimmy Carr at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2001.

10 - Ross Noble
9 - Chris Rock
8 - Victoria Wood
7 - Bill Bailey
6 - Bill Hicks
5 - Harry Hill
4 - Richard Pryor
3 - Eddie Izzard
2 - Peter Kay
1 - Billy Connolly

Gervais's stand up, no matter how funny you might think he is, is nowhere near the top 10 in terms of genius though

So according to the poll Jo Brand, who does nothing but mutter the same tripe about hating men and eating is funnier than Dave Allen, Tommy Cooper, Bob Hope and Lee Evans??

I do like Billy Connolly though, and Harry Hill but I never have found Victoria Wood funny, just, annoying !

i think the poll is ok. a lot of you have been slating it, but its all down to personal opinion.

For example Bigxchris doesn't think Jimmy Carr should be on that list at all. - But I think he's awesome and seen him live twice. So like most things its each to his own and the poll just reflects the national average.

And most of us have been saying Bill Hicks should be higher - and if it was a vote from blokes 16-36 I'm sure he'd be alot higher and victoria wood wouldn't exist - but older ladys (and I know for a fact my mother is one of them) will say Victoria wood is better than bill hicks just cause of material - so its all swings and roundabouts!

for me:

10 - Lee Evans
9 - Al Murray
8 - Harry Hill
7 - Bill Bailey
6 - Jack Dee
5 - Eddie Izzard
4 - Jimmy Carr
3 - Bill Hicks
2 - Peter Kay
1 - Billy Connolly

with one glaring omision - Richard Pryor (I have never seen any of his stand up, If I had, from what ive heard, he'd prob be in top 5, but I can't rate what I haven't seen) - likewise Denis leary - Yes - i know i need my head seeing to, but I just haven't seen him yet.

That list raised a bigger laugh than 9/10 of the comedians on that list.

Billy Connelly at No1? Get real.

Robin Williams, Ken Dodd, Jasper Carrott, Lee Evans, Richard Pryor, Tommy Cooper, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, and even Peter Kay p*ss all over him with ease.

I remember watching a show of his stand up about 12 years ago. It was funny. It made me laugh.

But since I have grown up, his jokes have become tiresome and, dare I say it, even childish.

Whomever voted for him as the funniest comic, rather then any of those listed above,  must never have actually seen any of them. :no

again all down to personal opinion mate

i rate Billy Connelly a lot high than Jasper Carrott and Lee Evans and I've seen all three live. infact lee evens only just made my personal top ten, i find him squeeky and annoying and his material - imo - isn't half as good as billy's.

Robin Williams is one i forgot and would probably slot in that top 10 - pushing lee evans out anyway. - his scots inventing golf scetch is fricking hilarious.

I've never seen any 'stand-up' comics live....it's not really my cup 'o tea tbh...and some on that list I've never heard of...

But I've liked Victoria Wood when I've seen her on tv...perhaps it's because I'm female and can appreciate her sense of humour more...

(But my bro also finds her funny...)

Anyways, like people have said, it's all a matter of individual taste really....

Oh and I do quite like Lee Evans as well...

Feel pleased for him as apparently his teacher at school said he would amount to nothing....so good on him!

:)

Leary deffo modelled himself on Bill Hicks but you really can't beat his 'No cure for Cancer' DVD. I watched it again just recently. It's a classic.

Have to agree with Billy at number one. The guy is absolutely hilarious and i would have been surprised if he hadn't come in at top spot in sucha mainstream vote.

Can't believe Victoria Wood is in the top 10. I don't think i've ever laughed at her.
