Chelsea are set to sign England star Steven Gerrard for a British transfer record £36m, according to reports.
The Daily Express claimed Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has authorised the fee plus a £120,000-a-week package for the influential Liverpool midfielder.

The paper said new Anfield boss Rafael Benitez had told one leading European agent: "Let's go and find some players - I've just sold Steven Gerrard."

Chelsea have denied Damian Duff and Scott Parker will leave this summer.

Liverpool have finally spoken out over the future of Anfield captain Steven Gerrard following newspaper claims that a near £36m deal with Chelsea has already been agreed.

Reports in the Daily Express - carrying somewhat dubious quotes from Rafael Benitez - have indicated that the dynamic midfielder will indeed line up at Stamford Bridge next season. Liverpool have continued to remain silent during weeks of intense speculation concerning the 24-year-old's career plans, but they have today told the Liverpool Echo that the reports are ' completely untrue'. A senior Anfield official told the Echo: "That is completely untrue. There has been no contact yet and as far as we are concerned Steven Gerrard is still our player.

"Talk of swap deals involving Scott Parker and Damien Duff is nothing more than speculation."

While fans on Merseyside will be heartened by the clubs' defiant stance, local media still feel that Gerrard is liely to move to Roman Abramovich's side this summer.

Well, SG is an excellent player but who cares if he leaves. Look around all the player in professional sports, i.e. NBA, MLB and NHL etc. Loyalty is the thing of the past. This is just a business now. Of course, I wouldn't mind seeing LFC winning the premiership next year while SG is watching his TV wearing the blue.:p :p

Until it actually happens I won't believe it.  I've had a lot of experience being in the paper and they don't give a flying ****** what the real story is as long as what they print will sell papers.  I reckon he wil stay.  Of course i could be wrong but I sincerely hope I'm not

Chelsea was quick to refute rumours that Parker and Duff will be used as players exchange to get Gerrard.

"We would like to make it clear that both Damien Duff and Scott Parker will remain important members of the Chelsea squad and team."

(source: Evening Standard)

Why is it that Chelsea are so quick to make their stand while the tösser Parry have stayed quiet? Most likely it means Gerrard's deal is planned but not yet confirmed for one reason or another. Getting either Parker, Duff or Cole will make it easier for Parry to walk in street in Liverpool.
