Employment law is weighted against employeers.

If an employee is extremely happy and he walks out of his job and his boss tries to get an injunction against him forcing him to return to work, 9 times out of 10 the courts won't force him to return.

Fulham tried their level best to force Loius Saha to stay but his mind was made up to move and in the end they faced the choice of taking £12.5m from Man UTD or facing losing him for nothing, which is what he was threatening to do.

Thats the economic reality of the situation.

Liverpool struck a deal with Houllier. It was a de facto sacking but there was a level of compensation involved so as to keep Houllier happy.

The rumours are coming from portugal? so you are saying Stevie G is negotiating a chelsea deal whilst in the england camp and focusing on Euro 2004?

You are even stupider than you sound.

SO his contract doesnt mean squat? you moron. When you sign on the dotted line it is a legally binding document. Stevie G cant do a thing about it! It would state that he has to play footy for LFc, and if he didnt want to its a breach of contract.
Listen you fool, Rick Parry is the boss, he got rid of Houllier and terminated his contract, and stevie g is tied LEGALLY to the club.
Never mind if he wants to leave, he can walk away, thats a breach of contract and is gross misconduct. He could be sacked!

I think JBG's point in "There's certainly something to the stories" is absolutely right.
What about Benitez going to Portugal to persuade Gerrard (and probably owen)? wasn't there something in there? or it was just the world's delusion?

And what century are you in for saying contract means everything?

Hello?  ???

At the end of the day Parry only said that SG wasn't happy with finishing fourth and that he was very very down, he hasn't come out and said that he wants to leave we but everyone is giving him a hard time even though it's all rumours at the moment.

Until he gets back from the Euro's and things are a little clearer I think we should expect anything.  ???

I very much doubt he could jsut walk away from LFC, and I dont even think he even wants to leave personally.
In fact im so confident steven gerrard will be a Liverpool player next year I'll bet anyone 100 quid.

Another example of a contract issue is Duncan Ferguson at Everton. He's not even a first team regular at Everton, but his contract pays him 40,000 a week and his contract states that he has to be the highest paid player at the club.
Everton dont want to keep on paying him 40,000 a week but he has a couple of years to run on his contract, so they have no choice but to pay him.
If contracts "mean nothing", then why cant Everton just tear it up and sell him?

Beacause its legally binding.!

Hustler.
As said previously the law is weighed against the employer.
Gerrard will leave if he wants to, whatever his contract. Ferguson will stay at Everton if he wants to, the employers can't do anything because of the contract.
They aren't comparable examples.
Even if Gerrard stays and is on contract there is nothing saying he has to play well or not embarass the manager at every chance he gets, it would be better to sell than to keep a player who doesn't want to be here.

Oh, and the latest rumours (strong ones) are that Gerrard will go for a player/cash combination - Duff, Parker + 20m

I would want at least 40m and those two!
I still have some confidence Gerrard will give us one more season, but Duff is a great player so we'll see what happens.

Got this off the LFC website, i don't know where their source is but it makes interesting reading. Every player has their price and if we got this price for SG it would soften the blow a great deal imo:

Chelsea are so keen to sign Steven Gerrard that they are preparing to offer Damien Duff, Scott Parker, Joe Cole and £20 million in exchange for the Liverpool midfielder.

The club's owner Roman Abramovich, new manager Jose Mourinho and chief executive Peter Kenyon are putting the deal together and hope to take it to the Anfield board and their new manager Rafael Benitez by the weekend.

Gerrard will be offered £125,000 a week to quit his hometown club and head to West London.

Republic of Ireland winger Duff had a superb season at Stamford Bridge following his £18 million move from Blackburn last summer, although he missed the last month-and-a-half with a shoulder injury.

But despite the popularity with the Chelsea fans Duff has not settled in the capital and would consider a move back north.

Chelsea are also prepared to sacrifice former Charlton playmaker Parker, 23, just five months after signing him for £12 million.

Parker, who has only started 12 matches since leaving the Valley would be among a host of players competing with Frank Lampard in central midfield, plus Chelsea are about to sign Portugese playmaker Deco for £14 million.

Joe Cole will also find himself surplus to requirements at Chelsea and would welcome a move to Anfield.
“It was my first of the season, my last of the season, my best of the season and the one I will remember for ever.”

Now that will constitute a good deal for us as we will definately be stronger and more balanced in the middle of the field.

Now time to hunt for a solid central defender. What happened to the Mexes rumour a while ago?

The Mexes rumour has been completely overtaken by the SG will he stay or go debate.

Looks like an Italian club

Even I would consider taking that deal which means its probably way too good to be true.
