Smeg ! I have to ask . How can you only have heard early Beatles hits and yet be completely unexposed to their other stuff ?

Christ even if you were violently against their music there's hardly anyway you could fail to hear it .

(eg. First time I accidently heard "here comes the sun" was in a shi'tty restaurant in Khandahar 1971 )

He's had a very successful solo career, he has sold well over 80,000,000 solo albums, sure he's never got a number hit, but they're worthless these days, his UK tour sold out in twenty minutes flat a few years ago. His success is based on not being commercialised and repeatedly rammed everyone's faces like a lot of artists these days. You might not like him and his solo stuff is no where near as good as his Smiths works but say he is unsuccessful is very inaccurate.

Arcade Fire's sound, mate, but they're not something you'll want to put on every day.  As for t'other one, all I can say is, who?  ???

Bob, do you know who Bret Hart is? The greatest Canadian since Thomas Edison's mother. Also did you know that Morrissey called Canada "evil" for it's seal culling programme. He has boycotted Canada. So all the Morrisseyites are going to cull Canadians for a bit fun!

Long live the Mozfather!

P.S (Arcade Fire are great, I've seen them live)

:)

Brett Hart's a legend, of course, in Canada!  I'm sure he'll be Premier of his native Alberta some day. :D

As for Morissey and the seal culling, he ain't the first nor will he be the last to through a hissy over the issue.  In fact, wasn't Sir Paul McCartney having a go at the Newfies recently over the same issue?  That practice is like a magnet for celebrity do-gooders.

Never was much into Morissey's veggie politics, personally.  Still own "Meat is Murder" and all that...just like the irony of throwing that on the stereo when I tuck into a big juicy steak!  He's a whinger, to be sure, but he often sets his whinging to appealing tunes so I overlook the politics and dig the songs.  :nod

I think he has a valid point in most of what he says, culling seals is an act of murder, I'm sure if I went around culling Manc and Yanks people wouldn't see that way, neither would the law and after all we are animals too.

Did I say he was unsuccessful?

All I said was that he and Lennon both went downhill rapidly.

That is my opinion, seeing as they did good music when they were in their respective bands, and absolute self-indulgent tosh as solo artistes.

Without being funny, I seriously doubt Morrissey has sold 80 million albums as a solo artiste. Elvis only managed 117m, and he was (and is) 10,000 times more popular than that Martin Jol-jawed gimp.

Morrissey has indeed sold 80,000,000 albums, obviously that's not the exact number, but it's around that region. You are of course right, his solo music isn't a patch on the work he did with The Smiths, but he is one (if not the best) song writer I have ever read and I've read a lot. The reason I like Morrissey so much is not that I think he's cool, I find him irritating more often not, but his songs have always had an air of humour and sarcasm with a serious message behind him. This is not the mark of a depressed man that is a mark of a song writing genius.

What makes Morrissey a breath of fresh air to the music world is he's not afraid to speak his mind; he turned down band aid because he felt it was a sham and way to gain free publicity. Most people would have gone along with it. Morrissey has been great for British music and even the fiercest critics of Morrissey will have trouble arguing against this.

Dont ask me mate i'm still stuck in the 70's when it comes to music  :D. I googled Canadian bands and those are what it came up with lol.

I think after what Celine Dion and Chris De Burgh have done to music, Canada should  ban it.  :D

At least Chris is a Red.

Hey, no pinning de Burgh on us...he's an Argie not a Canadian according to Wikipedia!  :D

Sadly, if he were Canadian I'd know because he'd be hyped up as some amazing home-grown talent. :no
