Then surely it all comes down to coaching?Runnning into cul de sacs and doing too many tricks can be coached out of the player. Joe needs to be at the right club with the right manager and he needs to play every week to become the player he is capable of becoming.

True Scottbot, but aren't you a bit tired of us signing players who just need this that or the other ? . Can we just sign the finished article for a change ???

Stu,I completely agree with you on this point, which is why I asked why do you dismiss suggestions the we buy another midfielder who is labelled as defensive. Surely for Stevie to be given a free role he/we would need the security of a holding midfielder ?.
I think we might be reading the same book here Stu, we're just on different pages.

Woofer mate...

As i've said a million times before, he already gives us this in his natural game. He already protects the back 4 enough as his natural game is about drive, determination, work rate, tackling and athletisism.

What we need is to change the emphasis of the side. Stevey can play with a defensive midfielder or without. However in my opinion, if we want to play "attacking football" and possession football with lots of movement, pace and decisive passing then he should be playing with an attacking midfielder.

As i've just said, even when Hamann is in the team he still protects the back four as much as Didi does and the back 4 doesn't need two players protecting it. My point is if you have a flair player in there giving us what Stevey doesn't we'll see the best of him.

I've also said a thousand times about United's midfield quartet.

Giggs, Keane, Scholes, Beckham.

We have a player similar to Giggs who can carry the ball at pace... Kewell... we have a box to box captain and ball winner in Gerrard... Similar player to Keane and i think will prove a better player than Keane. What need now is players who can give us what Scholes and Beckham gave the mancs. A defensive midfielder won't give us what Scholes gave them and that was a major part of there mix.

We've seen how we often lack creativety with Hamann and Gerrard in the centre. This has happened in numorous games, hence the reason i'm calling for a change in what now could become the strongest point of our team and already has half of the best midfield quartet since that one of Manchester Uniteds in 1999.

Surely you can understand what i'm pointing out?

lmao, so Cole aside, who do we go for to fill this "flair" position .Would we fancy some Brazilian samba or Argentinian tango to get us dancing ?

Its gotta be someone who has enough defensive ability aswell though. Theres no-point going for an out an out attacking player like Valeron who'd offer nothing defensively. The point of what i'm saying is we need someone who can do a bit of both but obviously there strength is going forward. Hence the reason i like Cole, he works hard was a one man team at West Ham the season they went down.

In an ideal world i'd take Scholes but that ain't gonna happen. With the right exposure and coaching i personally think Le Tallec could become the exact player we need for that role.

He certainly has the vision and passing ability and has shown he's not affraid to get stuck in.

Perhaps Rosicky from Dortmund may be a midfielder worth enquiring about as he is leaving Dortmund and possesses great creativity and attack from midifeld.

Not sure about his price but i've heard some great things about this player

Le Tallec  sounds like a cracking idea why buy in another player who will be a might be!
I think Le Tallec could well be the right man for the job!
So maybe bring in a ageing star (like Gary Mac was) in to help out and develop Le tallec further in the coming season!
I also dont feel that Cherou was ever given a crack of the whip either!

Talk about Cheyrou, he's the other natural left we have apart from Kewell right?
I really didn't see much of him last season.
Can't put much comment from what I have seen either.
All I can say that he has a decent left leg and..............period!

Have to disagree with you about being half way to Man UTD's great midfield of 1999, Stu.

We have one piece of the jicksaw in Steven Gerrard but Harry Kewell is a million miles off Ryan Giggs circa 1999 at the moment and with the growing doubts over his ankles I don't think that anyone could say that Kewell is equal to or close to Giggs in 1999.

Even if Kewell was Giggs' equal we are still short of two other players: a Beckham of 99 and a Scholes of 99!

Yeah, those players just grow on trees!

Why stop at Man UTD 99? Hell, lets try and replicate the Brazilian side of 1970!  :D  :D

UTD had the best midfield in Europe in 1999 but only won one European Cup....we can't compete with Man UTD or Chelsea financially and I think we would be better off trying to learn from the likes of Porto, Valencia and Deportivo.

harry kewell of 2001 was close to giggs of 1999 but since moving to us he just hasn't produced consistently.

Don't count on Gerrard being here next season! and Joe Cole would not fit in anyway.
What we need is a player as described by Stu - bit of a Swiss Army Knife kind of player-do everything and still open tin cans.
