Farewell gerard - Thank you and goodbye to a decent man

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby ROBtheRED » Mon May 24, 2004 8:27 pm

Okay, his reign is over and the majority of the fans on these boards are happy to see the back of him but i think the guy deserves some positive recognition and gratitude for his spell managing the club.  I agree with todays decision and am looking forward to the new appointment, hopefully taking Liverpool FC into a bright new era.
Houllier's time was up, it would've been very difficult for him next season after the media speculation and the loss of support from many fans. The board have been brave and acted upon this, they recognise we are falling further behind in the race to land the title and must be careful in deciding Gerard's successor.
I would like to wish him all the very best in whatever he chooses to do with his future and am glad the parting was amicable. I hope that other fans will wish him well also. After all when he came to the club we were in danger of becoming a sub-standard mid-table side, a side lacking in discipline and a direction. He brought in discipline and moulded his own side, losing the dead wood and making strong and brave decisions. The club has become stronger because of him and the trophy room has become fuller. The last 18 months have been frustrating as a Liverpool supporter and it was evident that we became very predictable and at times very boring to watch, a lot of his signings have been poor (step forward Biscan, Diouf, Diao, Cheyrou, Traore, Meijer et al) but then again he has signed some gems (McAllister, Hyypia, Henchoz, Dudek, Litmanen, Hamann) and also was reponsible for the emergence of arguably Englands finest player at the moment, Steven Gerrard! so there are a lot of parallels to look at - it is very easy to criticise him but deep down i believe he tried his hardest to deliver success for the good of the club, for the players, the staff and most importantly the fans (i love the quote he made about wanting to win the league title and dedicate it to the victims of the Hillsborough disaster), unfortunatley his hardest just wasn't good enough.
There are memories to cherish for the cup wins he gave us (i defy any fan who went to cardiff in 2001 and 2003 to disagree), he won a european trophy for us, something we haven't done for 17 years, the following year we were only minutes away from the champions league semi-finals, we beat Manchester utd 5 times in a row and narrowly missed out on the title in 2002 after a staggering 80 point total. But that was also his great failing, he DIDN'T win the title, although through his illness he nearly died trying.

Gerard Houllier is a decent genuine man who loves Liverpool FC, give him the respect he deserves.

I would like to say thank you to Gerard Houllier and that I respect him, you are a decent human being.  You brought pride back to the club for me, you had a positive impact on my life, I wish it could have worked out for you because as a man and as a manager, I know you desperately wanted success for this club.  I don't doubt that for one second.  You will always have a place in my thoughts for being a part of the great history of my team, Liverpool Football Club.

Sorry to see you go Gerard, but it's for the best all round and I wish you success in your future.

Hope to see you at Anfield as a fan sometime.  You are very, very welcome.

Yes we won't forget his time in charge.
He gave us some special memories in 2001 and gave us back our pride.
All true supporters thank him for his efforts and wish him the best in the future.
But it was the time for him to go.

Want to express my sincere best wishes to Gerard Houllier, the manager who brought discipline, pride, respect and dignity back to Liverpool Football Club when it was quite honestly going down the drain !!!!!!

Sorry for you GH that the dream has died but you nearly died trying and gave it your best at all times. I wonder how many of your players could say the same ???  Or some of the FANS for that matter !

I had the "Privalege" , yes privalege of meeting GH on the eve of the Worthigton Cup Final last season (Yeah i know detractors another "meaningles trophy", SO meaningless Fergie played his strongest possible 11 ??? ) I wished him well and asked if he thought we would win , he replied "you know Liverpool, we always try our best" I was struck by his humility and vulnerability then when you realise he saw the job as a service to Liverpool FC not the other way round.

Dalglish,

As ever GREAT POST in what has become a slanging match in recent time's/ last 24 Hrs.

(I hate to admit it me also in Stu's case),

We've often had the debate between the two of us, Late at night, me for the prosecution, you, for the defence, have to say was looking forward to the announcement yesterday.

However, GH, conducted himself like a Gentleman, as ever, feel... Don't know what I feel really,Helpless), with all the speculation going on at the club vis a vis takeover's, just hope WE make the right appointment, and WE can ALL move forward...

Not getting sentimental about GH, don't want to come across as hipocritical, the MAN gave it his best, just was'nt good enough.... 'nough SAID!

For God's sake the man (Houllier) was a waste of space. All this "what a nice guy" cra p makes no sense. He's been paid millions for nothing - forget about the "I sorted the Spice Boys" rubbish - my granny could have done that with a clip around the earhole - his tactics were straight out of The John Charles book of football and Le Diquehead has the nerve to  slag off the sytle of the 60s and 70s.
