Ecuador or Germany?

By the time England play Sweden they'll know who's first and second in Group A.

If you were Sven would you deliberately come second in order to play Ecuador? Probably not, but would you rest more players - at the risk of losing - if Ecuador win Group A.

I reckon Rooney and Owen could do with time on the pitch and I'd use a genuine holding midfielder (to prove it works). What would you advise Sven to do (see as he doesn't seem to know what he's doing)?

RESIGN!

But if he wasnt willing to resign I would want him to try a new formation that either included a holding midfielder or drop Fat Frank and play a holding midfielder( anyone but Hargreaves that is!) It would be a good idea to avoid Germany because even if we beat them the hate it would generate from the German supporters might have repercussions in later matches.

rather play germany they look poor compard to Ecuador. also form Ecuador are on would u wanna face them? also how much pleasure it would be to knock out germany on there own soil

I think it's very unprofessional to deliberatly draw or lose a match so you get "an easier opponent". It also sends a message that England lack confidence on all level, the players in themselves, Sven in himself, the players in Sven and Sven in the players. If England are one of the "big teams" and "favourites" to win the World Cup, then they should be able to beat Germany should they meet in the last 16, after all England did beat them 5-1. Shouldn't be much different this time should it?

I'm surprised at how little there is to choose between Germany and Ecuador. I'm not sure who'd be the toughest challenge for England, but I'd probably rather play Ecuador. Germany are likely to improve and Ecuador are likely to get nervous with them enterring uncharted territory.

not quite sure who id rather play but i supose it has to be ecuador facing the german's on there world cup would be a very very hard game if sven drops w@nk lampard and lets stevie g off loose we have a chance and bring lennon on in the second half he'll run them ragged and hope beckham supply's the crosses like he can

Ecuador every time. Not that they're a bad team, mind you...it's just that you do not want to play the hosts if you can avoid it. No matter how "poor" people think the Germans are (and they're not)...they will be well up for it in front of their fans--especially against England given their last meeting!

Having said that, England should try and top their group no matter what happens earlier in the day. I agree with Oasis (yes, you read that right...I'm as shocked as anyone

) that it's unsporting and sends a bad message to players, opponents and fans alike if you go out and purposefully lose a game in order to get a favourable opponent. Karmic justice will be swift and brutal in those circumstances!

Ecuador has played better football than Germany has.

But then in a knock out game, mentality is very important. And Ecuador believe it or not would feel the weight of England's shirt in that game. And then we might talk about the hosting team, the fact that an early elimination of Germany would mean loss of money, the traditional good luck of the Germans, and all that factors count IMO, in this kind of games.

On evidence so far, I would rather face Germany than Ecuador.

In all seriousness, Ecuador could take us. Like I say though, on evidence so far. They look so much at ease and not at all scared of playing on the big stage. Nothing to lose, like Cameroon in 1990 and Senegal in 2002. Heroes already.

But it would be a better game against Germany. We could probably scrape through against them but there wouldn't be much in it. Probaly fucking penalties knowing Englands luck. Germany look fitter, faster and more organised than us, but I have a feeling we could take them. If we were to take them, what a fucking lift it would give our boys to knock the hosts out, and not just any hosts, but fucking Germany, the old enemy.

It's what the World Cup is all about isn't it? The second round should be exciting either way.

I just ask one thing

With all due respect to all the countries of the world.

This is a World Cup, not a carnival. We need serious refs in this competition . A ref from Trinidad and Tobago or this exotic countries are not used to the pace and pressure of top games.

Only the best should be allowed, if they're all European and South American, so be it.

Good point, Sabre. Maybe a topic all for itself actually. The refs have been pretty card happy haven't they?

I suppose it goes by what you are used to watching though. You can get away with a lot in the Premier League.

I personally think the refereeing has been of a high standard in this World Cup, and the linesmen haven't done much wrong at all.

This is not sour grapes, but that Mexican referee England and Paraguay had was fucking useless though.

It sounds like Sven is arguably planning to 'risk' losing the gamect. Media reports are suggesting he'll rest Gerrard and Crouch (our only two scorers so far) because they're on yellow cards. Personally, I hope Frank gets a second yellow against Sweden forcing Sven to play Gerrard at the front of a diamond with a holding midfielder in the second round.

While Ecuador have had a great tourney so far, i still think it would better for England to face them rather then Germans on their home turf.
