Personally, I think most of the people on here who are gung-ho about signing Torres are basing their opinion of him on reputation and hype. I'm wondering how many times you have actually seen Torres play, if you don't even know what club he plays for. People who know what they're talking about don't make silly mistakes such as this.
I think he's a good player and all (A great finisher he isn't), but he's a very unrealistic transfer target. TheAce has already touched on some reasons why.

Problem 1: Ca$h. These days, when it come to money it has to be said that what Roman wants, Roman gets. If Torres does leave the club he loves, it will be for the club that is willing to through the most money his way. And we don't have the purse for it.
Problem 2: It's not just Arsenal and Chelsea. Inter, Milan, Barcelona and even Real Madrid are all apparently interested. He may not even want to come to England.
Problem 3: He may do a Nando and have problems finding his feet in the Prem. Not a problem for £6.5m and it is a risk one takes when buying any striker. But when that striker costs £25m, it's hard to take. We need a sure thing.
It would be great, but I can't see it happening.
solution 1: If rafa thinks that he is the rt man 4 the job and is convinced that he'll passionately play 4 LFC then he'll spend the money needed ,even if it's 20m.
solution 2: It's highly unlikely that Torres will play in spain ...that'll annoy and disgust the supporters of his current club(socieded). same as st michel playing against us.So if he's leaving he'll leave spain.
solution 3:It's better to buy a world class goalscorer than two experienced (read old)players for 10m each. And my friend nothings sure just ask Newcastle.
problem with solution 1: In an ideal world, yes, Rafa could just brake the bank and he'd come. But this is not an ideal world, and if we go all the way to the top of our budget and offer £30m, Chelsea will just offer £35m.
problem with solution 2: First thing's first, Torres plays for and captains Athletico Madrid. And did Figo care when he switched from Barca to Real? Of course not. He didn't care what the fans thought, as he believed it was the right move for him and the right money. That's like saying Rio, or Alan Smith would never go to Man Utd having played for Leeds, or Andy Cole playing for City having left Man Utd, or Sol Campbell going from Spurs to Arsenal. When most players move clubs, fans don't matter.
problem with solution 3: Okay, there is no such thing as a dead cert, but bookies give out odds for a reason. In a league where you can't lose more than 3 games a season to be champions, the more certainty, the better, and a player with premmiership experience is far more likely to make an easy transition.
red_guy wrote:Torres worth 15m? maybe...anyway, i just dont think we can get him for 15m or less. If we are interested and they knew that we're interested, the price will go up immediately. Yes, Villa is beyond our reach, for now but so is torres. I just dont want us to buy cisse number 2.

Owen wouldn't be a flop because he's played in the Premiership for pretty much his whole career bar one season. He knows what it takes to cut it in the league. He's a proven goalscorer in the league as well.
The key words there being "Newcastle paid £17mill for Owen". It's a not the players fault that he was bought for way over the odds is it? Newcastle have bad business sense and they were ripped off. And Liverpool refused to pay that kinda money, so if we refuse to pay £17mill for a proven striker on all stages & especially in THE ENGLISH PREMIERSHIP then I can't see us paying silly amounts La Liga strikers like Fernando Torres.
Yes, you're correct there's no reason why Torres can't cut it here but look at Morientes, people said that about him...and look...hasn't set the league alight has he?
