What is a real fan?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby 48-1119859832 » Fri Mar 03, 2006 5:18 pm

I've heard the phrase "Real Fan" being blurted out by a few people in some of the topics I've been reading & what I would like to know is What's a real fan? It just puzzles me that's all as I thought every fan was a so called "real fan" or is it just a swipe at other posters who do not share the same view as yourself on a particular issue?

It amazes me that there could be two types of fans "fake" 'n' "real". If that's the case then surely the fans (like myself who rarely go to Anfield) are what you would call "fake" supporters 'n' those who go to Anfield every match or most matches are what you would call "Real" fans as they are helping support the club by giving them match revenue therefore every single penny of thiers goes into the club, unlike when you purchase merchandise from say JJB Sports or Footlocker.

Maybe I'm generalising far too much 'n' maybe this issue doesn't have much relevance but I'm just a bit confused as to why people (not just our fans) brand other ppl as "fake supporters".

a real fan dosn't need to go to every game but would love to given the chance.

a real fan dosn't get at the team at the first sign of a bad run.

a real fan takes note to what is happening around the team in as many asspects as poss.

a real fan sticks by his team through the best of time and the worst.

a real fan dosn't have another favorite epl team or whatever

a real lfc dosn't support the man u in europe and say thing like "oh i always support the english club"

a real fan makes as much effort to watch the team as much as they can,and don't go to next with your missus when the game is on or just watch the champoins league games because they are the bigg fixtures

a real fan has always supported that club and hasn't just started paying more attention because we are the champions of europe.

a real fan has a funny story or a great memory about supporting a club that makes you smile every time you think about it.

a real fan is bais and can't help it.

i've run out back in a bit :D

Actually Oasis, this forum is one where the whole "real" fan thing comes up pretty rarely. If someone does start getting on your tail about it, you shouldn't let it give you a complex. I don't come from Liverpool, and I was about 10 when I started supporting LFC, so I get it from friends and once or twice from people here. But at the end of the day, I have my reasons for supporting Liverpool, the club that I love, and I don't have to explain myself to anybody. And what's more, on the rare occassion that I get up to Anfield, I've never been made to feel unwelcome and YNWA sounds just the same whether it's sung by a scouser or a cockney like me, as long as the love and meaning is in the voice. I'll always be a Liverpool fan, and if anyone says I'm fake, I honestly couldn't give a 5h1t. But like I said, this forum has a lot of open minded welcoming members and apart from one or two others, it's never been an issue for me. It's not worth getting a bee in your bonnet about.

a real fan takes there lfc shirt with them when they go on holiday

a real fan has an old programm knocking around from when someone brought it you because they know you would love to read it.

a real fan gets nervous before a big game.

a loss can ruin a real fans weekend.

a real fan gets stick from other clubs fans because you do it to them when there team loses.

a real fan hates the end of the season and that maybe tempered by a world cup etc but you can't wait for the start of the pre season to see how you will get on.

a real fan looks to see when we have got man u and everton when the fixture are released

a real fan isn't mudface

I'm a big Liverpool fan but I don't class myself as being in supersub, Daglish or Leon's league, to be honest.

I know I'm risking re-opening the OOTER debate but I'm an OOTER and while I'm a passionate fan and more knowledgeable about the club than most, I can't say that I'm as hardcore a fan as a regular match going local, particularly the likes of the three I mentioned above who moved heaven and earth to go to European cup finals.

I had the financial means to go to Istanbul and I know that if I put in a Herculean effort I would have got a ticket but as much as I would have loved to have been there, it was hugely inconvenient for me to go at that time of the year with work etc. If I was as hardcore as some fans other factors wouldn't have mattered and only a lack of a ticket would have stopped me from being in the stadium.

I missed a calculus exam to see the CL final, failed that class but it was worth it :D. I don't consider myself a real fan but I do watch all the matches possible and read, buy and follow everything Liverpool so as JBG I would consider myself a passionate supporter :D.

On another note: I thought Real fans were Real Madrid fans :D guess the difference is the spanish accent :p

'fan' is short for fanatic, so if you're fanatical about your team you're a fan, but I'm not sure being fanatical is a good thing!

'supporter' means that you give some support, be it financial by buying a ticket/merchandise or sticking up for them in the pub.

Most people could be classed as a supporter but not many could really be called fanatics if you stick to the original meanings of the words...but who wants to do that?!

Oasis,
Maybe this needed highlighting maybe not. But I would like to know where you've read on this forum someone refering to someone else as not being a real fan. I don't think any of the serious posters (not me) would ever revert to saying something like that.

However I have seen it used several times when refering to the obvious wind-up merchants and rival fans pretending to be LFC supporters. It really would be nice if you could put up a link to the part of the forum that spurred you into starting a thread on this topic, so we can judge for ourselves.

Thanks

Disagree, I know loads of liverpool fans who don't wear colours and I'm one of them.

There are different degrees of "fan" and I don't really begrudge any of them.

Iam a LFC fan because:

My dad was a season ticket holder from when they were in the old 2nd division and took me to my first game.

I'm from Liverpool - it's my local team.
I was born a LFC fan, I wasn't going to support anyone else regardless of how successful they were.

Some people have "chosen" to support LFC, some were destined"

I went to every game from when I was 13, skipped school dinners and saved the money to pay to go the game.

Nowadays though, the money issue comes into it more PLUS you basically need a season ticket to go the game unlike in the eighties when you could pay on the gate.

Everyone has their own reason for loving LFC.
