Is the squad really that bad? - I don't think so.

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

stu the blue youre at it again calling other peoples points on here. Why a fool for sellng dudek, if kirklands to be number 1? He's on big wages and you shouldnt be paying that much for a back up keeper. Aimar does play in centre mid as an attacking midfielder! Exactly the kind of player we need. Argentinian or not!

This is a discussion board you open up a good thread but then spoil it by your pettinance

Look, Stu is right and he know what he talk about and I agree what he said about Dudek. I think it is bloody madness to get rid of Dudek, there is nothing wrong with him.

OF COURSE WE ARE GOOD ON PAPER. ON PAPER WE'VE GOT A TEAM THAT'S CAPABLE OF 1ST.WE HAVE DEPTH AND TALENT. THE PROBLEMS ARE WE PLAY A s##t STYLE OF FOOTBALL, WE PLAY THE WRONG TEAM AND WE CAN'T FINISH OFF TEAMS AS A RESULT OF THIS.

Thats cr#p. Arsenal and Chelsea on paper are both stonger than us.

Why a fool for sellng dudek, if kirklands to be number 1?

How many games has Kirkland played this season?

That answers your question.

Anyone advocating getting rid of Dudek needs their head testing especially as Kirkland is in Whiston Casualty every other week !!!!!!! you have to feel sorry for such a  player and we all hope he makes a speedy and LONG LASTING recovery. Dudek's an able replacement and hasn;t done a great deal wrong all season after the previous season before's well publicised gaffes.

I realise like many that getting rid of Anelka and Litnamen was foolish but its no good looking back, we have to move forward and attract some real quality to compliment the 4 or 5 TOP CLASS players we have at present.

This will hinge I think on 4th spot as wil Owen's continued career at LFC but if we do get that 4h spot then the likes of Cole And Mexes will be viable option.

Here's to 4th

In a funny way, Gerrard is so versatile both in an attacking sense and defensively that I'm not 100% sure that he isn't the cause of some of the problems with our system. Time and again when things are shaky you see him back just in front of the back four picking up the pieces, and then our attacking options tend to be limited as he's 60 yards behind the strikers. By the time we've worked the ball a bit in midfield, there's so much distance between where he's started and the other goal that the opposition are reorganised after losing the ball and in a position to close down and try and win it back.

Likewise, when he does go on the charge up front and things break down for us, you look at who's left behind the ball and suddenly you get worried. When Hamann was firing on all cylinders that wasn't the case, but he looks far less formidable than he did in the treble season, and all of the back four have had inconsistent seasons at best.

For me, we need to get the solidity back in the back four - new blood alongside Hyypia, if not a new central defensive pairing altogether. Then we can use Gerrard further up the field in a role not dissimilar to Hamann's "spoiler" role, but far enough up the field that he's in a position to supply the front two or the wide midfield players with more accuracy than the 50 yard hit-and-hopes that he has been guilty of on occasion. If he can boss his opposite number and break down attacks around the halfway line or even higher up the pitch, our counterattacking possibilities are infinitely better as there's far less time for the opposition to get numbers back. If/when Cisse comes, or another prolific goalscorer with some height and serious physical presence, we could feasibly have a system which allows us to start our passing game further up the pitch and give us the weaponry to do some serious damage.

[quote] stu_the_red   - I don't think there is alot wrong with the current "slow build up" tactics. I like this way of playing as i feel it takes alot out of the opposition

Stu - the current 'slow build up' tactics are our biggest problem. In what way do they take a lot out of the opposition? Opposing defences sit on their own penalty box watching as we pass the ball acrosss our backline 50 times a game. On the occassions when we do move the ball at a bit of pace, how often do we see our players turn back towards their own goal or infield as the move loses all momemtum and we have to start again. I know we won the game on Sunday and i thought we played quite well in patches (particularly given the pressure the team are under) but there were several times in the match where one of our players had the ball and we were so static i was tearing my hair out. No one  showed feet, got closer to the ball or tried to give the player an angle - this is school playground stuff. Its the managers responsibility, surely he must see it? is he watching the same game?

I agree that our team is still a pretty good one on paper and with a few choice additions it will (should) stand up pretty well to any team in the country. But with this manager, I just don't see it happening.

While the squad isn't obviously as bad as for example Leicester City, they simply are not good enough to make us competitive as serious title contenders. The league table doesn't lie.

Changes are needed. The dead weight must be cut.

For a while the problem with us has been more to do with the way we play rather than the personnel involved.

Our system is flawed in the way that (as already stated) we make it easy for the opposition to regroup and form their shape ready for our assault.
It was no surprise that when we were succesful we were counter-attacking very quickly.

The teams that play the best(and most effective)football, are those whose philosophy is one of going forward and more importantly MOVEMENT.

Cloughie used to say " football is a simple game - it's the players who try and complicate it! All you have to do is pass the ball to the nearest player in your team colours then put yourself in a position to recieve the ball back."

Pass and move.

Simple innit! ?????

i agree. i saw more positive evidence of this on sunday, the second goal being a prime example. the problem is i just haven't seen it on a consistent basis apart from early in the season against spurs and arsenal.

we also don't get in behind teams and get crosses in. we desperately need a right winger who can drive to the bye-line and put balls across. this is especially the case with cisse upfront who is very good in the air.

Lets hope that Cisse gets into the box , so far we just don't seem to get bodies in there to receive crosses from either wing. :(

i gotta agree with the daddyo. Its not teh sqaud thats so bad, its the system we play. We need to attack more, and give it a go, thres al ot to improve, squad included, but if we dont change the system we play it wouldnt matter who we had playing

Totally agree

gerrard will have to play a holding role if joe cole plays. Since Diddi returned to the team Gerrard much more of a threat with his surging runs. This would stop if he has to play the holding role.
