24-year-old Alonso came close to a £12m move to Real in 2004 before the deal fell through at the last minute.
In that same year he left Real Sociedad for Liverpool in a deal worth £10.5m and has notched up 62 appearances to date for the Reds.
Real have set their sights on a number of players as they look to replace ageing stars such as Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane in the summer and will attempt to persuade Spanish international Alonso to return to his homeland with a big-money bid.

Deportivo La Coruna midfielder Victor has revealed why he rejected a move to Liverpool.
Victor said: "It was impossible to pardon the money and in these circumstances I have preferred to stay in La Coruna and finish my contract in June."
Deportivo La Coruna's Victor says he didn't prevent his proposed transfer to Liverpool from going ahead.
During the transfer window the player claimed his current employers were trying it on with him with regards his severance package but he's now made a u-turn and claims there wasn't a problem on his part.
Victor said: "I do not know what problems occurred in the negotiations between the two clubs, but I know it was not a problem of my pay-off.
"Deportivo defended their interests and were wanting Liverpool to pay all those things. It was not something that I went looking for.
"Deportivo put the proposal to me when the clubs had reached a basic agreement and I was not against playing for the current champion of Europe.
"I never became involved in discussions about who would pay my pay-off, but if I had any problems it was that I didn't know who I was supposed to go to.
"That was the major sticking point between the two clubs.
"In the end nothing came of it, but not because of the pay-off, which was a small detail.
"Now there are no problems. I am playing and enjoying playing here now.
"I am not disappointed, because nothing materialised, I did not start thinking about it too much.
"I want to make it clear that I am pleased to stay, because there have been some bad things claimed about me wanting to leave Depor and harm the club and that is completely false.
"People think that there is still a chance I could join Liverpool in the summer, but we shall have to see. I just do not know."

City can travel to Anfield with a good deal of confidence according to Richard Dunne.
The Blues' last win at the home of the European champions came courtesy of two Nicolas Anelka goals in May 2003, but the recent displays against Charlton and, in particular, Aston Villa have the spirits at the Carrington training ground as Richard said when speaking to mcfc.co.uk.
"The way we have performed at home we can be confident going to Anfield, but last week we took those kind of performances on our travels. It has given us a big boost going into this week's game.
"Going to Anfield is always a great occasion for any player, it's one of the most famous stadiums around, they are a top three or four side and it should be a great game."
Even without the imposing presence of Momo Sissoko, Liverpool could field a physical starting eleven but Richard is of the opinion that City showed similar attributes against Villa and that they should use these to their advantage at Anfield.
"The way we approached the game we looked a strong, physical team. At set pieces we got our heads to every one, it's a tactic that Liverpool have used a lot recently but it's something we have been working on over the last couple weeks.
"We have five or six big lads who can attack the ball, and we can expect to score a few more from them. There will probably be a big onus on set-pieces on Sunday, both for and against us."

**Geert De Vlieger has been recalled to the Belgian national squad for the friendly against Luxembourg. The stopper last played for his country in 2004, but has earned glowing praise from Stuart Pearce for the way he has dedicated himself at City this season even when not on the bench for some home games
