Reaction to the birmingham game

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Obviously, it's a massive disappointment to drop two points in a game we dominated so much, particularly against 10 men.

To be fair though, there are definitely a lot of positives to take from the game.

First and foremost, look at the players that didn't start - we played most of the game without Alonso and Carragher - two essential players for us. Cisse and Sissoko, love them or hate them, didn't feature at all.

Agger and Hamann stepped up and looked more than adequate. Fowler came on and could've won it for us. Garcia, having not played for a while, looked lively and involved, shame about his miss. Kewell, meanwhile, was magnificent.

It's a p*sser, course it is. Probably changed some of the more optimistic minds about our chances of winning the Prem this year. Still a point though, and that's more than Man U and Arsenal got tonight.

Three points from second, two games in hand, and daylight between us and Spurs. I know our expectations have risen this year, but there are a hell of a lot of teams around us that would kill for our league position right now.  :)

After the night they've had against Villa, if I was a Chelsea fan I'd look at LFC's performance tonight and be a bit worried about Sunday...

I am dead :censored: off by our stinking strike force. Morientes must be the biggest joke ever. Letting him play 90 minutes day in day out is beyond a joke now. We are playing with 10 men!!!!

Birmingham were down to 10 men after a bad challenge so we had two 10 men teams out there. I would like to see Morientes move back to spain after this season and from now on he should only play reserve football or sit on the bench. He has nothing to offer us. Absolutely nothing.

Cisse? Well with him we have 10,5 men since his pace at least counts for something. He can play wide right and provide some crosses. Score goals he can not.

Crouch I count for 1 man. He aint a lethal striker but he offers a lot of other things.

So we are in my opinion a 10 man team. We can defend and pass the ball around the field like no other teams in the world. But where are the goals. Our midfielders and defenders (riise) outscores our strikers 100% of the time.

Why send Pongolle to Blackburn and sell Baros when they are 10 times more dangerous than what we got right now.

F@cking :censored:. Can't see anything positive tonight. It is going to be like this UNTIL we buy a quality striker.
¨
Fowler? Well he is a striker, but I don't think he is fit. At least not yet. Can he get fit? I don't know. But I can actually see fowler scoring a few, but Morientes and Cisse they will never score.
If football is banned in heaven. I'd rather go to hell.

They arent on a great run so maybe its a good time to play them. I didnt see the game tonight as im at work but it sounded like we dominated and got done by a sucker punch.

This is football these things happen, but I am getting very worried by the lack of goals from our forwards, unless robbie starts knockin them in then we are in trouble.

u cant see anything positive? did u watch the game? ????

i know people are upset but lets get things in perspective here. We fought a team clawing for their premiership lives, and we murdered them everywhere but whre it counts, on the scoreboard.

We know we need a poacher, a striker. but its too late to boohoo over pongolle or baros. i could say cisse should have played. but he didnt.

we didnt lose. it was a freak goal.
somehow whenever we play teams their keepers play out of their skni.
kewell is still playing well and no one has asked for him to leave in at least 45 minutes on here
agger played well
alonso was upset at the goal he conceded. of course he should be but u could tell he was a real red at that point.

morientez... dunno what to say, the guy IS class, thats fact, but just not for us at the moment.
Crouch did everyuthing but score, but he is a striker.

all in all it could be alot worse, we could be mackems

Would certainly like to see Robbie alongside Crouch. Of all of our potential striker combinations, none of the others seem particularly threatening.

No shit, how long did it take you to figure that one out?

Dissapointing result. We were playing at home with plenty of chances and possession. I would had taken a 1-0 win, but what made things frustrating was an own goal from the most unlikely player three minutes from time.

The top five have all drop points in this gameweek, and we should had capitalized. We this like the Man Utd result, was not the one we deserved.

Can't see us getting much out of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Baros 10 times more dangerous than Cisse and Morientes? Where were you last season when Baros was missing chances ridiously similar to the ones that Cisse and Morientes are missing now?

13 goals in 44 games, yeah he's dangerous alright.

I've had a great week up until today when I almost had a heart-attack after the og.

The fact that Tottenham,Arsenal,Chelsea and Man Utd dropped points makes things better. (Strange week, all top five teams have dropped points)

Well I'll use this thread as a relaxed opinion, now I'm more calm.

Many things to say, excuse me the rant.

Liverpool

Rafa has reasons to be angry. I think it's common knowledge that when you have one man more since in 23, what you hae to do is make the pitch wider and have patience. We lacked patience, it seems we were 0-1. I cannot understand that. Even when we were 1-0 we were hurrying too much. Alonso was given 20 minutes to give the game composure, he also seemed in a hurry.

Birmingham

Proffesional team. They were valiant, they knew to play with 10 men, they worked hard, and they got their prize.

Agger

Positively surprised. He didn't seem young nor unexperienced, nor impressed by Anfield

Our strikers

The anxiety that LFC has to score (when they have not reason to) affects them. Fowler got poor service because that unnecesary anxiety or hurry. While this mistake also affected Crouch and Morientes, both were quite bad in the first half, they seemed anxious and badly needed to score. And that lead to mistakes. On the second half though Morientes did a better job. In the goal he had the good thinking to do the pass to the correct place, backwards. Good header pass to Luis Garcia too. Wasted. Crouch had a grey day. He should know better, he has to be patient to score. On first half there was a pathetic encounter of Morientes and Crouch for the same ball. That can't happen.

Riise

Few mistakes. Good attacking help. Good game

Kewell

Excellent first half, he recovered some good balls, excellent attitude. In second half he was good until he dissapeared. Bloody DoE, in min 70 with Kewell tired, Gonzalez would have done havoc.

Alonso

The task was simple. 20 minutes to give composure to the game. Failed to do that. And you lot know that I'm an Alonso admirer. In the OG a big mistake, you cannot do a pass goalwards. I can understand some OG that hit you the ball and can't help it. But that was a mistake, and that's why he was ashamed, and that's why he lost a ball shortly afterwards.
I don't think he's depressed, I think he's just angry. Don't worry, he'll stand up and we'll keep the excellent Xabi he's used to be. Come on Xabi!! OSTIA!

Hamman

Nobody will mention him, but at some moments of the game he seemed the only bloody man that seemed to realise we were playing with one man more

The Ref

Ok, you can be valiant and show a red card, that's nice. But that doesn't mean you have to compensate the other team afterwards:

* Gerrard suffered a "dangerous play" situation, the defender elevated the leg TOO high .

* Luis Garcia was fouled by Lazaridis when he was heading to the one on one to the keeper

* Too much Birmingham stick, but I cannot blame them for that, I had done the same if the ref allowed me.

That's my rant, excuse me for it.

Come on reds!

I think it's fair to say now that the title's pretty much gone, so this season should now be about trying to tie up second place, give the likes of Kromkamp and Agger good Prem experience, bring players like Anderson through, keep it going in the CL, and basically get ourselves set up for a genuine, sustained title challenge next year.

We've got a really good squad, and between now and summer we need to teach them how to bury games like this. We're lacking in danger up front, and there's a really disappointing lack of a killer instinct. I hope that Robbie's going to help give us that.

I know it's hollow right now, but Birmingham have made a habit of beating us in recent years. That didn't even look like a remote possibility tonight. It's still two points lost as opposed to a point gained, but we were unlucky tonight. It happens.

And look on the bright side - United had an even worse time than us today. His mix-up with Van Der Sar was absolutely priceless, but only slightly less funny than seeing the miserable c*nt trudging off after his red card.
