Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby red37 » Tue Oct 04, 2005 11:05 am

when you think of our great club in the terms shankly used to describe it..... "bastions of invincibility" and nearly every other 'chest thumping' mantra HE delivered... its so hard to take when that transpires to be otherwise (sunday)

but, its life in the red corner im afraid! 'rough with the smooth' 'in good times...in bad'  lets face it, and BE honest a fair amount of us have had VERY little cause to moan this last 30 years or so...YEP there was the nineties, so what, we played second and third fiddle for nigh on ten seasons if not more...what happened? well WE are all here, LFC is here, and neither have ever been apart.  get used to it. there IS better sides out there, there always have/will be...
our aim is to ASPIRE to that level, not whinge because we cant all have it NOW!
through thick and thin.. and through ALL the storms...
this club still retains its 'magic'. look at istanbul....and this club is in the safe hands of a 'mage' far and away equipped for the task..it was he who created that 'world shaking event' in may.. his only miscalculation in doing so, was that its raised the sleeping pheonix again...we want and EXPECT more miracles from his wand..
do you know what.. im in NO doubt whatsoever as to his acumen in accomplishing the job.. but eventually, not tomorrow.. all rafa is missing is the RIGHT components to achieve that.

The point made about somone who knows the club and the Premier league coming in is a fair one.
It would make sense and i was disappointed when Tommo was let go.
But managers are stubborn people, they want to do things there way...i doubt rafa would of ever taken the job if he was told that his no2 had to be picked by the board.
But i see where your both coming from.

We are currently four points from bottom and we have reached October.
We can't score goals.
We sold and failed to buy proven goal threats.

We missed out on the cb and rw we were promised all year. He is not above critism, if it wasnt for the magnificent 7 minutes in Istanbul people would not be singing much praises, I will probably get slammed but I dont care, we need an ex red onboard to give Rafa some advice in the prem, we all know the clubs in the prem them that get promoted them that are likely to be relegated, Rafa wont know with only being in the UK for just over a year.

Anyone agree with me that he needs a bit of advice on the teams we face week in week out in the prem? Maybe Kenny or Tomo, I am possitive if he got help and advice with these teams we would be a lot better off.

In the european games he has it spot on and we could even win the CL again, but I do worry about the premiership.

57 points? Have Chelsea even played enough games to be ahead by 57 points.

Yes four points from bottom with two bloody games in hand.

Yes I know it hurt on Sunday. It always hurts to get well beaten at home but at the end of the day what did we really lose on Sunday?

Three points? Maybe. At halftime, a draw was realistically the best we could hope for, as nobody (in England) will put three past that defence this season. They've got the best defence I've seen in years.

To a team that is clearly better. Better than every team in England. Man-to-man, our team MIGHT displace three, possibly four of their starters. They're gonna win the league by more this season than they did last season if you ask me.

Respect? I don't think so... One bad (ok, brutal) performance doesn't turn us from European Champions into a laughing stock. You think once we get into the knock-out stages of the CL (and we WILL), Juve or Milan or Barca or even chelski themselves will discount us 'cos we lost badly yesterday? Will they sh!te.

Question - If we come third or fourth, and qualify comfortably for the CL next season, will people harp on about yesterday as if it should somehow disqualify us? Likewise, if we come fifth or worse, does yesterday's score somehow make that worse?

The answer is no.

We MUST improve on Sunday. It's not good enough, if we continue to play like that... But we must also remember that we'll not play a team like chelski but once more in 32 games - NOBODY else will beat us like that again this season, and probably for the next five seasons.

I'm not a 'blind-faith'er by any means... There's holes-a-plenty out there, and Rafa should not be immune to critisism... Why won't he play Cisse, when we would have trouble scoring in a brothel? That's a fair question, and we deserve an answer.

But I think we'll be ok. And if we finish strong (I think we'll be challenging for third place), there will not be an asterick beside our name that says "but lost 4-1 to the champions is October last, by the way..."

Stop panicking. It's far too early.

The league is in a critical state if you ask me. If Bolton had won yesterday they would have gone second ffs. This is a side who I watched in Europe last week give the biggest impersonation of the 1980's Wimbledon I've ever seen.

At the other end, Sunderland have got five points from eight games and aren't even in the bottom three. It's frightening.

Since last season our goal scoring record has not been impressive, but we still have our defense to boast about. Now our scoring problem has not improved, in fact the goal drought seems to be more serious. Defense? You witnessed it on Sunday.
How have the team strengthened since last season? Yes, more promising youths are brought in. What about the 1st team??
I believe in Rafa, if he doesnt wanna use Cisse im not gonna question him cause there must be a good reason behind it, but cmon, you have to acknowledge there is much work to be done to improve the team.

No Crespo, BILARDO might be full of Charisma but not Mourinho. It all depends on what you mean by charisma of course. For me, Mourinho is the same idiot that was in Barcelona, he's popular because he provides plenty of headlines to the press and they like that. Benitez won't be as popular for the press because of that. But that ahs nothing to do with charisma, IMHO.

Oh, And I used to like Crespo a lot, not in Chelsea though...

You cant just start inventing new rules to stop Chelsea winning trophies! At the end of the day it's up to us and all the other Clubs to build a team and beat them. Just because they have unlimited cash, doesn't mean they are not beatable. Jose is on a good run right now, but a few injuries could rock the boat and disrupt the flow of the team.

Many other teams who have almost unlimited cash supply in the past 'failed' because the coach wasn't up to the job to get his players performing as a team. The team disintegrated and the manager got sacked as a result.

Using your analogy, what if they shut down the 1st division after 1984 in acknowledgement of our superiority? Or maybe they should've retired the European Cup after Real won it 6 times in a row!

Fact is, although they have an unfair advantage, Chelsea can be beaten, & it is upto us to step up and compete. A cap based on profits would be a good thing, but is probably unworkable in reality.

sorry to bring US sports into this, but the Yankees in baseball are very similar to Chelski.  They pay a single player more than many teams pay their whole squad.  It has been like this for a while, and the good news is they don't always win.  In fact they are beaten by teams with comparably miniscule payrolls (angels, diamondbacks).  The recipe for success: teamwork and a tactical manager.  Do we have this: YES!  So, it can happen, just give it some time.  (By the way, I am not a yank.  I was born and raised in Britain)
