Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby RED BEERGOGGLES » Mon Sep 26, 2005 4:00 pm

I cannot believe the response on this forum to Liverpool’s slow start to the season  ,it is well documented in the pages of our illustrious  history Liverpool are notoriously  slow  to mount a title challenge .
Indeed  Liverpools most memorable  and awe inspiring  performances have often come when behind  .
Listen and listen  well Rafa Benitez will not be influenced by the rantings  of bewildered fans  however
Incensed  they may be ,he will not be swayed from his blueprint  for the future.
This season we will see the wisdom of the man come to the fore .
What seems patently  obvious  to me but for some odd reason seems to escape a number of disgruntled fans  is while Chelsea our flying high in the league Liverpool remain unbeaten and have looked as solid as Chelsea , in fact apart from the rampant Russians  playthings  there is no-one   who I cant see Liverpool beating  and I fully expect Liverpool to finish Second this season .
Remember how we lamented the zonal marking yet Rafa persisted and eventually prevailed, we all whinged about the procurement  of Crouch but the lad has shown  he can play  .
Benitez knows his players  anyone recall Rafa being interested in a little known striker by the name of David Villa ,  Who ?  Valencia’s top scorer  since his move from Real Zaragosa  that’s who .
I just think that if I can witness the changes for the better in the club then why cant some fans  .
Liverpool are playing better football they are also  keeping the ball a lot longer and dominating possession
And the defence untill last Saturdays naivety  at the back has been superb and as resolute as I have seen for a very long time .
I think fans have to realise Chelsea are the force in football for now, I loathe making a statement such as that but only a fool cowers from the truth .  Financially they  can out muscle any team in the world it’s a simple proclamation but its proved to have a profound effect on the game .
If Liverpool can finish second or third then Chelsea will know next season  that Liverpool under Rafa have truly arrived and let battle commence all we can do now is hold their coat tails ,but the future is Rafa’s so let them gloat ,things change so quickly in football .

I do agree with you on the need for fans to be patient as I am also sure that Rafa is building something special at Anfield. The man has only had one season and look what we have done! Two cup finals including IMO the most prestigious trophy in world football, no noT the carling cup!

This can only bode well for the future and I for one believe in him. However, even though we should be optimistic, I think a second place finish is a little too optimistic for this season anyway. But I can say one thing without regretting saying it. We will be playing Champions League football and that can only be good for a top side with title aspirations in terms of improvement in general and an improvement in confidence (Like as a team, we need any more confidence after last season!) Premiership wise, You will see a huge improvement in the next two seasons if not this season.

Just wish everyone was reading from  the same script Wrighty maybe if they actually attended a couple of games some of the fans would view it  from a different perspective .

Appreciate it mate, I used to work in one of the kiosks!haha. Selling 75pence real mccoys!what a rip off those kiosks are!

I don't neccessarily think you have to go attend the matches to even see the improvement it's that obvious but I know what your saying lad.

Totally agree with the posts guys. I am happy to see us get off to a solid (if not inspiring) start to the season. I am concerned by our lack of action in front of goals but cannot help but be convinced that Rafa knows what he is doing. It's a long season and a solid start is a must if we are to mount any kind of serious challenge. Let's be honest - we are unlikely to win the Premiership this season!! What we are now is a very solid team who is still finding it's feet with new players having come in. Rafa is still searching for his best 1st XI and a balance between European football and Premiership football (hence the purchases of Crouch/Zenden etc). Riise, Garcia, Cisse, Finnan are part of our best XI and they couldn't even get a start on Saturday. Add Sissoko & Morientes to that list and you have a pretty formidable squad.

Yes - it's a frustrating start to the season in the Premiership after an awesome pre season but lets look at the positives and back what Benitez and Parry are trying to build at Anfield. Fortress Anfield will be once more!!

Good point on the number of quality players. You can even use the bench as a barometer for improvement looking at the bench the last couple of seasons. Eg. Diao, Cheyrou, Biscan etc. The end of our injury crisis has also been a major factor in having a stronger bench. i.e, sinama, Mellor, traore, the impending return of Kewell as well.

Cheers Baron it seems the pessimists are growing in numbers which is a shame for a forum that used to be frequented  by knowledgeable football fans ,sadly they seem to be dwindling in numbers mate

i dont think it makes any difference how many games fans attend and to call people with opinions fools is a little childish. you could put 10 fans in a room and let them talk football and they will not all agree. football is a fickle sport and not a lot of fans do look at the bigger picture, maybe it is down to frustration that some of the fans want instant success. i dont think that anyone of us truley expects us to actually win the league this season and the points made about chelsea go a long way to explaining why that is but we all want the same thing at the end of the day even if some of the posts on here seem otherwise ,perhaps we are now paying for winning the champions league maybe people thought we would start this season winning every game. id agree with the points that we are making  progress but i wont come in here saying how much we have improved because we took a point from birmingham the events in istanbul havent clouded my judgement that much  i for one dont agree with the system he is playing and i dont think some of the players he has bought are good enough but that is my opinion and if it all works out and they come good  ill be big enough to hold my hands up and say yeah i was wrong there. we are hardly at the stage where rafa is being abused by his own fans ( see ferguson and the scum). this place would be pretty boring if everyone agreed with each other and i dont think having an opinion makes anyone less knowledgeable than anyone else

Chidish or not mate.I stand by what I said.Iagree with 99% of what you say,but when I read posts criticising players and management it does my head in.We are all entitled to hold opinions, but so many negative posts at this time in the season is uncalled for.

Precisely Baron concise and straight to the point the team and manager need praise heaped upon them ,not be derided and slandered by the doom merchants that come out the woodwork when things are not going as planned

Good post Red beergooggles!!
I think a lot of people post negative out of sheer frustration at times!
On Saturday a lot came on after the Birmingham game giving off and criticising because we were by far the better team and dropped 2 points by a freak O.G!
OK Raffa should have maybe have played a different more attacking formation but who,in hindsight are we to say the outcome would have been any different?
Great manager as he is,he is human like ourslves and can't get things right every time!
We have had a good start to the season and as has been pointed out many times we have taken something from games we got damn all last season!
We are looking solid and that is a good improvement from last year espcially when we conceeded so many soft goals away from home!
Raffa has got the defence exactly the way he wants it!

He's doing the sensible thing and sorting out the back 1st!
There no point in scoring 2 goals a game and letting in 3 !
So it had to be sorted into Raffas way 1st.
The goals will come soon and when they do we will see a better Liverpool than we have in a very long time!

All the pessimism won't help LFC's cause.  We should be supportive of the team and the manager.  All the critisim is really not helping the cause.

Patience is a virtue.
Impatience is not.
You'll Never Walk Alone
