I was at the same match as you Spionian. Alonso was amazing in the first half - by far the best player on the pitch. You weren't the grumpy old git sitting behind me on the Kop who kept muttering '100k a week and he plays for 20 f**king minutes' were you! ???

Fernando Morientes > 19 < wrote:I a bit disappointed with the 3-0 score as we should have put the game beyond TNS reach with all the opportunites we had in front of goal. Fernando Morientes was unlucky a few times, even Rafa was eager for him to score. LeTallec didnt perform so well, but when Djbriliant Cissé came on, he combined rather well with moro. Gerrard and Alonso played well in CM but i'm quite disappointed with the amount of possession TNS had as they prevented us from playing a few times. I guess that Rafa will again be fielding a strong team in the second leg and let's hope this time we do show our real class as European Champions.

A five line reply? :O

Have you had your Weetabix this morning?  :D   :D

Hahaha, not guilty mate. Maybe he's from the same school of thought tho!

In fairness to Stevie, he showed that when he wants to he is the best central midfielder in the league. I can't remember seeing a better "footballer" at Anfield than Xavi, he is SO comfortable on the ball it's incredible.

I think we just need to be happy that we possibly have 2 of the best midfielders in the world in our team now.
There will be alot of envious people around, like we have envied players at other clubs.
Need one or two central defenders, and a proven striker and we wont be finishing 30-40 points behind the leaders anymore.

I saw the match on tv and thought Morientes was terrible. He didn't do much last season and he better improve if he wants to stay in the team, doesn't look like a £8m player.

Also, why is Cisse on the wing. I thought he was supposed to be a centre forward, down the middle, bang in goals. He cost £14m but looks like a Stan Collymore type, big fast player but hangs out on the wing so no real goal threat, also he kept on just kicking past defender and sprinting, I expect more for £14m than pace - anybody remember Franz Carr? brainless winger.

A bit disappointed that a welsh pub team (slight exageration) kept our strikers scoreless.

Overall, I thought the team looked reasonably sharp for this stage of the season. Thought Warnock looked good and could be a contender for first team spot.

Morientes just had a bit of bad luck today. He scored 2 nice goals againste Wrexham and had a nice goal disallowed to in this game. But i think the lot of you failed to notice that although they didnt hit 5 or 6 they were passing the ball around like Valenciaused to when they played us./ I couldnt believe how well they passing it around in the first half. And im sure most of the squad isnt at full fitness anyway. Xavi Alonso pulled out soem great passes and showed good vision at times. I think it was a good performance and could have been more but TNS's keeper was up to it.

I too was at the game Niall and thought that Nando played well. The thing about him is that he will not sit on the shoulder of the last defender and run at people (it's not in his game), he links the midfield with the attack and all of his good work is done with his back to goal, his touch is first class and his hold up play is as good as anyone. He missed a sitter (granted) but he plays his best when he has a striker on the shoulder of the defender. Le Tallec does not do that, so we were left wanting in that dept.

Cisse was obviously put on to get fitness and Benitez did not want to risk goin 3 up top (strange decision).

Pele, Owen, Martins, Adriano, all fit into your descrition of pace and not a lot of skill. But i for one would be bloody glad if they were plying their trade at Anfield? ???

One thing your forgetting is that Pottor and Warnock both played and they both played whilst we got 2 goals. I think they have improved a lot since last year and Pottor is actually looking good now.
