UEFA's president Lennart Johanssona said in the interview :
"We'll consider the case again if L'pool wins the Champions Leauge, because as a champion L'pool should have every chance to defend the title. It's FA decision to request for a fifth spot in Champions Leauge if L'pool wins Champions Leauge"

So it's plain and simple

We win Champions Leauge (no problem here :buttrock

Having said so it's hard for me because it means that Polish champion will start Champions Leauge qualification on 2nd round and not in 3rd - easier way

But heck, L'pool must be in Champions Leauge, and that's important !!

Barwick eager to lend support over Liverpool issue

BRIAN BARWICK last night broke his silence on the great European debate and insisted that he would lead the FA’s campaign for a fifth Champions League berth should Liverpool beat AC Milan in the final in Istanbul in a fortnight.
The FA chief executive, a self-confessed Liverpool supporter, had kept his own counsel on the issue but has now told The Times that he is sufficiently encouraged by Lennart Johansson’s words that Uefa would listen to an approach from the FA that Liverpool should be allowed to defend a possible triumph even though they will finish outside the top four in the Barclays Premiership.

Johansson, the Uefa president, added to the sense that European football’s governing body is far from united on the matter when he suggested that the FA should be lobbying on Liverpool’s behalf. He urged the FA to make a written appeal after stating “the champion must always be given the opportunity to defend the title”.

“We’ve had constant dialogue with both Lars-Christer Olsson [the Uefa chief executive] and Lennart Johnansson at Uefa in recent weeks,” Barwick said. “But we were very encouraged by what Lennart had to say yesterday.

“We wrote to Uefa a fortnight ago asking them to make an exception should Liverpool finish outside the top four of the domestic league but win the Champions League. We will continue to state our case that, in this situation, they should be allowed to defend their trophy, as England’s fifth representatives. If it is required we write again to reiterate our views, we will do so. We’re hopeful, that’s all we can say.”

Johansson offered his support to Liverpool before the European Cup semi-final, second leg with Chelsea, in which Rafael Benítez’s team qualified for the May 25 final. But further comments from William Gaillard, Uefa’s director of communications, threw doubt over the prospect. Johansson added: “Let’s deal with it when we know the facts after the final of the Champions League and then see to it that we are crystal-clear that the champion must always be given the opportunity to defend the title.”

It is thought that pressure has been brought on Uefa from sponsors and TV companies not to allow a situation in which a club as globally recognised as Liverpool are excluded next season should they win the tournament.

Michael Owen added to the debate last night when he said that it would be odd if his former club were unable to defend the European Cup. “If they win, then it would be a strange situation if the champions can’t defend their crown,” the Real Madrid forward said. “But they’ve got a hard task in winning the competition first and they have to be focused on that, and if they do win, there will be questions later.”

FIFA supports Liverpool wildcard

England should get a fifth Champions League qualifying place next season if Liverpool win the trophy, according to FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

Blatter backed UEFA president Lennart Johansson in his support of Liverpool being given a wildcard if they beat AC Milan to win the Champions League on May 25 in Istanbul.

"Johansson said he would support the idea, if the Football Association (FA) proposed it to UEFA. And I think he is right," Blatter told Thursday's London Evening Standard newspaper.

Liverpool cannot qualify for Europe's top club competition next season via the Premier League because they will not finish in the top four this season.

The FA has already said it will continue to make representations at the highest level to secure a place for Liverpool if they win the Champions League.

Johansson said earlier this month: "If there is a possibility to make an exception for the winner of the Champions League then there could be an additional place. The door is always open. We are there to serve football, not just dictate."

Blatters decision would be final wouldn't it? If so, if he agrees with the decsion to allow Liverpool a wildcard into next years competition, why doesn't the f*cker just quash the thought?

I'm a bit worried with some fans attitude, too many people are taking us to win the CL for granted. I mean, I am quietly confident myself, but judging by the way half the people are getting on in here there will be a lot of dissapointed supporters if we get beat.

i have faith in RB to get us to play a good game ...this is his domain
he is more suited to this type of footbal more so than the prem...i think he has learnt a lot this year but he still go more to do
