yeah its likely they will beat 90 points....

mathematically chelsea could end up with 101 points but i hope the curse does the trick and they get 89 points and win the championship.

In the old days when it was 2 points for a win they got 68 in the old Division 1 in 1978-79.

I'm too lazy now to look it up, but it may have been the case that had there been 3 points for a win in 79 then they might have surpassed 90 points.

Chelsea may surpass our points total from '88 but one thing is for sure, they have not displayed the same quality of football our boys showed that season.  The 5-0 hammering of Forest was typical of the football Liverpool played that year.  Barnes and Beardsley weren't just satisfied with winning they wanted to entertain and win with style in every game.  Aldridge was scoring for fun and the midfield of Houghton, McMahon and Whelan just attacked, attacked and attacked.

The only disappointment of that era is that we didn't get the opportunity to take on the Milan side of Van Basten, Rikard, Gullit & Maldini.

Yes.

I was only a snapper when Liverpool won in 1977, 78 and 1981 and I only have vague memories of 1984. I do remember 1986 clearly but I have to say 1987/88 was the first season when I completely fell in love with the club.

John Barnes was a major novelty and the football he and Beardsley produced that season was simply magical.

People who remember the 1970s claim that the 1977 and 1978 teams were the best Liverpool teams of all time, but for me it has to be the 1988 team.

In my mind it was the best in Europe that year and would have given the brilliant AC Milan team of 1989, 1990 a run for its money.

That said, as good as we were in 88, AC MIlan of 1988-1990 was the best club side I have ever seen.

Benitez spoke to some of the papers last week about his managerial style and he claims his inspiration is Ariggo Sachi and his AC Milan side, whom Benitez rates as the greatest manager and team of the modern era, and I have to agree with him.

how many league games did we play in 87/88?

I don't remember the team that won 3 Euro cups between 77 and 81 but they must rate higher than the 87/88 team as one season doesn't make a great team (Arsenal last year) and the earlier team proved they were best in Europe.

I don't think they were exciting though.

I agree that MIlan are the best team I've seen.

The '77 team proved that you don'y have have a team of superstars to be successful.  Joey Jones was at left back, Tommy Smith's and Ian Callaghan's best days were behind him and Jimmy Case played on the right side of midfield.  The 11 that played that night were no nonsense professionals, seasoned campaigners who were prepared to give anything for our cause.

The current team should be reminded of this before taking on the Juve stars.

Even if Chelski beat our points total, they still haven't beaten our 18 League Championships, 4 European Cups, 3 UEFA Cups, 7 League Cups, and 6 FA Cups.

Until they reach those levels, even with their billionaire owner, they are worth sh*t.
