Nunez back

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby stmichael » Mon Feb 07, 2005 3:19 pm

Well after his petulant sending off in that farce at Burnley, Antonio Nunez is set to return from his three game suspension this weekend. I hope he has prepared himself for a long stint on the bench because I can't see him getting in the team ahead of Garcia, who has started to show a bit of form again recently (now I've said that he'll probably have a nightmare against brum and be getting slated on here again.)

However the main point is that I'm just a little concerned that too many people seem to want to write Nunez off as a mistake where as I believe he will come good for us in the long term. He has already admitted publicly that he has more pace to come and hasn't shown his ability to go past defenders, so he obviously knows he has work to do and isn't afraid to admit it, which is always a good sign.

On the shooting front that was one of my own criticisms of Nunez on another thread. Sometimes he takes up really good positions and Gerrard seeks him out on the right with beautifully weighted passes, there is a defender in close attendance, yet Nunez always opts to control the ball and go for the line, when sometimes the weight of the pass is so perfect that you wish he would touch the ball just past the full back and burst into the box to unleash a drive or cut the ball back.

There have also been many times when he has received the ball almost on the corner of the 18 yard box and again he has always opted to go wide and wait for support when it has often seemed easier to take one touch into the box before firing in a drive al a John Arne Riise.

I also bring him up because I can see him starting against leverkeusen with garcia pushed into a more advanced role just off baros.

well...i rather have nunez @ right wing than garcia. Don't get me wrong. Garcia is a better player but nunez puts in better crosses from the right (from which morientas can score).

Garcia is a support striker (i am saying this the 37th time)

Garcia played on the wing for Barca so he must be acustomed to playing out there! I dont think we have seen the best of either player yet!

Garcia is banned for Birmingham anyhows, so that will answer that particular conundrum.

Nunez had a bad injury to his knee and that is not an easy thing. If I remember correctly he had a number of keyhole surgeries because it was not healing correctly. I think it takes a while to mentally feel comfortable with the knee and add to that he never played for Real means that he will need time to come good.

I would think that Raffa would not have taken him in the deal with Madrid if he was not good. I think Raffa knows what will work in the premiership and I trust his judgement (after all Real rated him once). He will come good.

People by nature are quick to judge, our new players such as Josemi,Nunez and Garcia are no exception.

After Garcia scored three goals in four games[correct me if I'm wrong] some were comparing him with Kenny Dalglish. He got into a slump of a form and picked up an injury and soon as he started playing poorely he was written off as a bad player. How long has Garcia been playing for us? 6 years? No, not even a year and yet he's being judged. Robert Pires anybody?

If Garcia is such a horrible player why would Rafa sign him after already knowing what kind of player he is as he coached him in La Liga?

Nunez couldn't break into the Real senior squad, [Even Michael Owen can't start ahead of Raul and Ronaldo] and he picked up an unfortunate knee injury. He was played two weeks early against Arsenal because we had harldy any players due to many injuries. Time will tell whether he's a good player or not but time needs to be given.

Josemi was superb in the pre-season and early this season but along the way something happened to him [lack of confidence, fitness, whatever] can be we worked on.

Pellegrino is not here to stay for the future, he's only been signed in order to cover Carra and Hyypia and has been critisized because Pelle, a 33 year old who was injured earlier this year and lack match fitness could not automaticaly play superbly.

I take issue with AB summarising that apparrently people were comparing Garcia to Dalglish after a god start at Liverpoool ? ???

My initial reaction to be honest to this thread "Nunez back" was "ohhh great ??? And why shouldn't it be cos he has been less than effective so far in a red jersey.

I actually think Garcia is a decent player and has the ability to make his mark, it reamins to be seen if Nunez has that same ability. I resereve judgement on the lad as it takes at least 3 or 4 months to settle (not that Morientes and Alonso needed anything like 3 months ??? ) but I digress :D
