Defence vs chelsea?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Jamie has been as good as any Centerhalf in the prem this year. No way he should be sent out onto the right. I'd expect the team to line up something like this.

GK: Dudek
CB: Hyypia
CB: Carra
LB: Traore
RB: Warnock
RM: Sinama
LM: Risse
DM: Hamman
CM: Xabi
AM: Stevie G
ST: Baros

Expect Mellor to come on for Baros at some point, i'd be surprised if his hamstring lasts the full game.

agree though, we need the strongest possible defence against chelsea. the full backs are going to have to work verty hard.

i forgot finnan would be out against chelsea

but yeah anyone on except diao, but i wouldn't have traore in the middle, cause carragher isn't a right back never was, thats where houllier made the mistake really, carragher looks more comfortable in the centre

so i reckon warnock would be better than putting on diao

jeeeeesus, don't any of you read the bl00dy posts?

i was saying that in the soton match, when finnan got injured, i thought it would have been a better move for the rest of that game to put traore in the middle and JG out to the right (where he has played many times, remember?). in no way would this be a good permanent back four for us - but better than any with diao in it.

i hope that finnan is ok for the chelsea game. and, seriously, i would put traore at left back for that game - he's faster than riise and a better tackler, which is what we need against robben. riise should play infront of him at left midfield.

again, this is what i would do for the chelsea game. not as a permanent back four. got it?

i think pongolle will cost more problems as a centreforward rather than a right winger.

as for warnock as rightback, i also picked him too. But it looks as if rafa will pick diao.

I think for this game Sinama will be better suited to running at Chelsea's Full backs but expect him to float all over the place. Chelsea's weakness defensively(if they have one) is players getting at their full backs. Sinama is playing better than Luis so that's why i think he'd be better suited there this time. A bit off topic what with this being about the team rather than the defense but I fancy us to play similar to what we did against Arsenal(which by the way is the only match i've ever been to live, a great choice too).

Well said Daglish Hamann will be as important as Gerrard in this game. No other team in the league has 3 players any where near the quality as we have in center midfield - why not use them. Hamann will stop lampard and robben's runs from midfield. Gerrard can get up and down all day so he can support our lone striker. We all know what were gonna get from Alonso and that is pure quality. If we can keep it tight in the midfield we can try the same tactics as they have all season. one nil will do us!

There biggest threat is Lampard and Robben. With three of this quality in center midfield they will struggle

Duff is another threat.

If houllier had bought duff,
a)alonso
b)garcia
c)nunez
d)josemi

would not be here.

Baros and Kewell unfit - Benitez

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez revealed Milan Baros and Harry Kewell were not fit enough to face Southampton at Anfield.

Czech Republic international Baros suffered a slight recurrence of his hamstring problem, but he is expected to be fit for Saturday's clash with Chelsea at Anfield.

Kewell, despite speculation from Australia that he could face an operation on a groin injury, is also expected to be fit to face the Premiership leaders.

Benitez added: "Both Baros and Kewell were not right for this game, but I do not expect them to be missing for the next one."

Liverpool also lost full back Steve Finnan during the first half, the Republic of Ireland defender needing eight stitches in a gashed leg.

Rafael Benitez is hoping to have Steve Finnan, Milan Baros and Harry Kewell available for the New Years Day showdown with Chelsea. Neither Baros or Kewell played a part in the Southampton match, and Finnan limped out in the first half with a cut knee.

The Irish full back has had 8 stitches but should make the squad and therefore start the match against Jose Morinho's league leaders.

Top scorer Baros had a slight hamstring problem with Rafa keeping the Chelsea match in mind decided not to risk him against the Saints. While Kewell is suffering with a groin injury - some reports today claim he may need an operation and therefore several weeks out.

But Benitez said "Finnan and Baros should be okay to be in the squad for Chelsea. Baros had a problem with his hamstring but I think he will be back for Chelsea. Harry Kewell should be okay as well but I will need to talk with the physio and see how he is."

i agree that diao is useless...dump him.i would line up 4-4-2 as baros prefers a partner up front...

whilst Alonso is clearly a super catch for LFC, my thoughts on Nunez are out at the moment, however, Luis Garcia, for me, has been left wanting for most of the season, and looks a little lightweight. i mean, why was he sucking his thumb the other day?

i know he's only a little guy, but there are plenty of folk like him who get stuck in, its frustrating. he has oodles of talent but little bottle. he's not doing it for me at LFC, get rid and buy shaun wright-phillips

Super news on the Finnan front but i'm not too happy with Harry's return. I like Risse and Troare as a better bet to stop Robben. Harry hasn't been fit and clearly won't be coming off another injury. A spell in the reserves would do him the World of good.

Revised line up

                    Dudek

Finnan   Carra         Hyypia      Traore
           Hamman      Alonso
Sinama                                 Risse
                  Gerrard
                   Baros

The key to stopping Chelsea is to reign in Duff and Robben. I watched the extended highlights of the Portsmouth/Chelsea game last night and Pompey marked Duff and Robben out of it by doubling up on them as much as they could. Pompey were unlucky to lose as their game plan worked for 75 minutes.

Playing Diao at right back would be an absolute disaster, as would Troare, as both of them are not capable of handling Chelsea's wingers.

Keep the game tight and force Duff and Robben down cul de sacs and I think we will get a good result.

I'd play 5 in the middle, with Pongolle raiding from the right ala the game v. Arsenal. His pace will ensure that Chelsea won't be able to have a free hand down their left hand side.

The key to winning against chelsea is beat them in the midfield and ball possesion. It means i would go for 4-5-1 formation and play fullbacks who can pass the ball decently.(to build up from the back and keep hold of the ball by passing around)

Code: Select all
                  Dudek
 Finnan   Cara  Hyppia  Risse

      Alonso  Hamann Gerrard

Cinama                             Kewell
                   Baros

Maximize the pitch length and run more at the fullbacks as someone mentioned here..
