Protecting the defence

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Do you think that Hamman has to protect the defence too much, I remember someone saying that if our defenders were good enough they wouldn't need Hamman to molly coddle them like he does, I know every defence need protection in front of them but I feel that when SG is back it will be Him and Xabi in the middle but then Xabi ends up playing the 'Hamman' role and ends up being wasted not being able get forward and do what he does best.

Hope that makes sense? I know what I mean but it's hard to type it  ???

I think what it is Hamman is not young or fit enough to attack and then get back and help the defender, so when Liverpool are on the attack he wont get forward as much. Were as Gerrard and Alonso are young and can get up and down the field and do both jobs.

I think a Gerrard - Alonso partnership is what we have needed.

The like of Gerrard is irreplacable. However, I trust Rafa will be able to strengthen the team overall with the money we get for Gerrard (if he goes).
However, I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed that Gerrard will stay and lead the team and that we will also sign a proven striker and a pacy CB. This seems to be our weakest link at the moment.

...oh yes, the form showed by the youngsters yesterday is very encouraging indeed. Watch Rafa blending them in slowly...

Whitbread had a good game, drived in a bit early sometimes but looked very Hyypia-eque and with experience he could blossom nicely :)

I'm not looking forward to January - the Chelsea circus will be coming to Town again.  Thinking they've got the biggest balls.  I hope they turn into the next Leeds.

It's certainly possible.

I don't think Gerrard will be going anywhere in Jan, but it is a serious possibilty in the summer.

I would leave Kewell out of the team right now, because there are players who are doing a better job than him.

Pongolle and Mellor are both pushing, but with Mellor scoring 2 yesterday, It is hard to call who is ahead, but don't think either will start against Palace, it will be Garcia and Baros.

Hyypia has been disapointing as far as his pace and passing skills are concerned. Against Blackburn he made the most sloppiest pass I've ever seen which led to a Blackburn goal. I watched the replay of the goal that Birmingham scored against us, had Hyypia been faster he could had cleared that ball from the line.

Its no secret that we need a pacey centre back, but I'm not sure he would replace Hyypia, I think we can another good season out of him.

If he continues to be sloppy with his passes, he will be replaced. His lack of pace is a leak to goals for our opponents.

I don't think he and Carragher have gelled that well, they seem to get there wires crossed a lot about pushing up to play someone offside, and Carragher often drifts out of position and starts doing the midfields job in closing space.

Hamann was scoring loads of goals when he was with newcastle. Now he has to play anchor to protect our defence.

The problem : Slow defence.
