I remember Rafa saying he was a very good organiser in defence, and comparing him to Carragher. I think we might aim for someone with more technical ability though.

from the uefa website.

Mauricio Pellegrino

One of Valencia CF's formidable South American contingent, the tough-tackling Argentinian Mauricio Pellegrino is strong in the air and an excellent man-marker.

Club
The central defender established himself as a player of immense talent at CA Vélez Sarsfield, playing over 200 games. He won three Apertura titles and two Clausura titles and a number of international honours, including the Copa Libertadores and European/South American Cup in 1994.

1998: Spent the season on loan at FC Barcelona, making 23 appearances as Barça won the league but never quite winning over coach Louis van Gaal.

1999: Pellegrino did catch Valencia's eye, however, and after two games back at Vélez he returned to Spain. He did not look back, forging an impressive pairing with compatriot Roberto Ayala. First there were two consecutive appearances in the UEFA Champions League final - both lost, unfortunately, with Pellegrino having his penalty saved in the 2001 shoot-out against FC Bayern München. Then, in 2001/02, he helped the Mestalla side to their first Spanish championship since 1971, having turned down close-season offers of a move to Britain.

2003/04: A dislocated shoulder and the form of Carlos Marchena kept Pellegrino on the sidelines and he made just 16 starts as Valencia won back the Spanish title. He was a substitute in the UEFA Cup final victory over Olympique de Marseille, coming on in the 86th minute, by which time he had agreed a one-year extension to a contract due to expire.

Did you know?
In Spain, the tall Pellegrino is nicknamed 'El flaco', meaning skinny. Back in Argentina, he has the more imaginative sobriquet of 'El longanizas' - which is a long pork sausage.

If he is good with headers and is a good organiser who can read the game well, like John Terry, who is not the fastest but a rock of a defender, then he'd be a very useful addition.

Hyppia, for some unknown reason, has been very slow of mind this season.

If he is free, i say sign him. We need cover for centreback....esp with DIAO on the bench (waiting to pounce on a chance...any chance  :p )
