Liverpool look to Campo

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez will try to offload controversial striker El-Hadji Diouf in a swap deal with Bolton Wanderers' former Spanish international Ivan Campo during next month's transfer window.
Ivan Campo: target of Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez
Diouf, who has been on loan at Bolton since the summer, is serving a three-game ban after admitting spitting at Portsmouth's Arjan de Zeeuw last weekend, an incident which brought widespread condemnation of the Senegal international. It is understood that Liverpool have already made an approach for Campo, 30, and have told Bolton that they would be prepared to give them Diouf as well as around £600,000 but have so far been turned down.
Benitez is concerned that any injuries to his central defensive pairing of Sami Hyypia and Jamie Carragher could be catastrophic and would like Campo to play in defence rather than the midfield role that Sam Allardyce favours him in. The Bolton manager has told Campo, who has suffered injury problems this season, that he would like the player to see out his contract, which lasts until 2006. However, Campo favours a move to Liverpool to play under Benitez.
The Liverpool manager is restricted in his transfer dealings by the club's limited transfer funds. Although he was given £10.5 million to spend on Xabi Alonso in the summer, the club's board will struggle to furnish him with much more in January.
