As for our game i thought that was arguably Rio's best performance in a Liverpool shirt. Although the opposition wasnt stellar it was just nice to see us kocking it around and playing some free flowing stuff. Whilst we are nowhere near the finished article yet we are definitely improving, whatever the players and manager are doing on the training pitch its slowly but surely starting to pay dividends. This is starting to remind me a bit of Jurgen's early days at the club actually.
I think City were the blueprint that PSG followed but they did not have the same fair play restrictions. PSG were spending crazy money on all the “best” players out there and the French league doesn’t make that much so it was certainly due to the sponsors which primary came from Qatar.
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has been sanctioned multiple times by UEFA for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules regarding overspending and artificial revenues.
While they have avoided domestic charges from the French league (bribes no doubt), they have faced significant European punishments:
• The 2014 Sanctions: UEFA found that PSG had a massive financial deficit and had artificially inflated their income via a sponsorship deal with the state-owned Qatar Tourism Authority. PSG accepted a €60 million fine (with €40 million suspended if they met future targets), restrictions on their spending, and a cap on their Champions League squad size.
• The 2022 Sanctions: UEFA again punished PSG for failing to comply with "break-even" financial requirements. They were ordered to pay an unconditional €10 million fine, with an additional €55 million suspended depending on whether they hit strict financial targets over the subsequent years.
PSG was also heavily investigated by UEFA following their historic, market-shattering acquisitions of Neymar (€222 million) and Kylian Mbappé (€180 million) in 2017, though they managed to narrowly escape further punishment for that specific window after restructuring their accounts.
The problem is if the only punishment is fines to a team where money is not an issue it will never stop.
It should also be mentioned that Chelsea were guilty of the same thing but because the new owners self reported the violation that Abramovich did they got off lightly with fines, their success is tainted though as they also cheated and haven’t really been held to account.
