Liverpool's fullbacks: a liability

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby polygemus » Sun Nov 14, 2004 1:18 pm

Josemi on the right.
1. Slow, often out-paced by opposition.
2. Often gets caught out of position (esp in last 3 matches)
3. Cannot tackle well
4. Cannot put in decent crosses.
5. Cannot pass properly
6. Rarely joins in attacks.
7. Keeps looking for offside when he should be sprinting back

Traore on the left.
1. Cannot tackle well
2. Cannot put in decent crosses.
3. Cannot pass properly
4. Rarely joins in attack
5. Gets outjumped by smaller players on headers.

I always thought Traore on the left was bad enough. But now it seems that every game Hyppia and Carragher are working overtime to cover the a**es of these 2 idiots.

A few seasons ago, Liverpool boast the best defence in the league with Carragher, Henchoz, Hyppia and Babbel.
Just look at us now.

I believe these 2 idiots are gonna costs Liverpool a place in the Champions League if the problems are not addressed.

I think you are wrong about Traore dude. Hes been one of our better players the last handfull of games.

Josemi on the other hand is hot and cold, some weeks he plays good, most weeks hes like a headless chicken. But i wouldnt worry about it, Benitez knows what hes doing.

traore is doing well for me and blending in well at the back, as for josemi ever since he got sent off his seems to lost all confidence stays far to close to the centre backs for my tastes.
I would be a proffesional footballer if i wasn't limited by my lack of talent.

1. Don't know his football
2. Rarely watch Liverpool play hence these comments
3. Clueless

Idiots like this will likely get 30 heated comments and makes me wonder if we are all watching the same team play. C'mon, a blind mouse would have noticed that Troare is just about the best defender in our line up, based on his recent performance. I never though I would make this comments 3 months ago but he has improved a whole lot and no one can say his tackling is anything short of top class. He has cut out his mistake and is steadily improving under Rafa.

To call him a liability? and why 2 comments on his lack of surge upfield? Did you watch him play yesterday, or the game before, and the game before last?

To say Josemi rarely joins in attack...you cannot be serious!

Give some respect and don't call any players selected by Rafa to represent us an idiot...you wh@nker

Josemi on the right.

1.(Slow, often out-paced by opposition), He is not slow, but I think he gets caught straight on far to often.

2.(Often gets caught out of position),This is true.

3.(Cannot tackle well),He is a strong tackler, but he often rash.

4.(Cannot put in decent crosses),His crossing is quiet good, but yesterday it was poor.

5.(Cannot pass properly),His passing is O.K.

6.(Rarely joins in attacks),He is often left isoleted with no cover so he can't go foward.

7.(Keeps looking for offside when he should be sprinting back), I think Hyypia is the problem here, he takes to long to push out when the rest of the defence is playing the offside.

Conclusion - Josemi started well, but when we started playing Garcia on the right he has been exposed because Garcia can't and won't defend. We must remember he is still young and inexperienced, but his signing is odd because I think Otsembor is at the same level but with more long term potential.

Traore on the left.

1.(Cannot tackle well),He has improved his tackling a lot, cant remember him missing one or going in clumsly since he has been in the team this season.

2.(Cannot put in decent crosses), This is true

3.(Cannot pass properly),He does tend to dable on the ball, but at least he is keeping it simple.

4.(Rarely joins in attack),I don't think he has natural attacking insticts.

5.(Gets outjumped by smaller players on headers),I don't agree with that, he is good in the air.

Conclusion - I think you've been very harsh on Traoe, is has been as solid as a rock, he hasn't put a foot wrong defensively, but saying that, he dosen't offer much attacking wise, so for this reason I don't see him as a long term answer for the fullback postion.

Traore is a centre half playing at left back. His tacklings superb.

Josemi is a player who will improve, but i personally would like to see Finnan or even someone better still, we've never manager to successfully replace Babbel.

Good points, made them like an idiot though.

If they're good points Stu, how did he make them like an idiot? Personally I think any criticism of Traore is harsh given his recent performances. As for Josemi, he's clearly going through a bit of a sticky patch but I wouldn't be inclined to write him off. he showed enough in his early performances to suggest he will be a good player for us. It can't be easy when he has Garcia (who I think is a top player but not particularly combative it's fair to say) playing in front of him. As for Babbel Stu, he was brilliant you are spot on there.

I agree about Babble. I know i've said it a 100 times before, but he was arguably one of the best right backs in Europe. I agree about the poor play of our full backs yesterday, but i think they get caught up going forward and let their man go.  im sure Rafa will sort it, other wise we will be like the old Keegan Newcastle who tried to out score the opposition in everygame!

I think the original poster's points are harsh and the assessment of Troare seems to be based on what he saw of Djimi under the old regime.

Don't u know the rules of the forum? That is never to verbally attack another member?

Of course we are watching the same team play. But aside from Liverpool I also watch Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Juventus matches. You can literally vomit blood after seeing their fullbacks in action and then seeing our fullbacks....

If all we do is to watch Liverpool and then keep patting ourselves on the shoulders and deny the weaknesses, we are gonna be in shock when our beloved club fails to qualify for CL. Then we sit there wondering why.......

Traore best position is at centreback. Him playing left back will only make him a more complete player. If he continues with this recent performance week in & week out, he could become the pacy centreback we all are craving for.....

We have weaknesses... who doesn't. The only thing is you aren't doing yourself favours by coming on here talking about getting rid of everyone and how poor so and so is.

Our best back 4 is Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia and Riise from right to left.

Traore is good cover for the centre and now left sided position. Josemi needs to improve but i'm sure he will and he'll become either a decent right back or good cover.

There are other weaknesses at the moment, we need a striker and we need two wingers unless Harry Kewell pulls his socks up.

Alonso and Gerrard are fine, The back 4's solid but i'm finally agreeing (although nothing to the extent made out that Sami Hyypia's not the player he was). Personally i'd like to see a class right back and a top class replacement for Sami.

Luis Garcia has good potential as a second striker so that leaves the wide midfield areas and a main striker to sort out. We also need to decide on a style of attacking play, IE do we attack down the wings or through the middle. Imo this should define the type of striker we sign.

Yeah, I agree with you...how's about Ledley King, would be perfect replacement for Sami, what do you reckon, Stu?

If we signed King (which i wouldn't say no too, but how realistic is that?) i would probably put Carragher on the right and play him with Sami as apose to instead of.

Quality player he is though. :)
