Could be but I still don't understand how all our mid-size signings at soooo poor. Surely a 6-10m player should be able to contribute to our squad. That is if we sign the RIGHT 6-10m player. BR and his technical team didn't prove they are to be trusted with big money. Borini ,Aspas ,Alberto ,Ilori ,Allen (?) ffs where is the serious scouting in this team?

He'd be better off here and I'm not just saying that, apparently Chelsea currently have something like 24 players out on loan and a similar sized first team squad, if he goes there he will probably just end up like Sturridge, Lukaku, De Bruyne and Schurrle etc - very good players who just let their talent waste away, lost in the vacuum that is the Chelsea playing staff.
As always these days though I expect money to talk, if Salah mentioned he was having second thoughts I'm sure someone at Chelsea would wave even more money in his face.

The owners were always fairly honest about the fact that we are looking for value for money.
Perhaps the Lucas and johnson injuries have forced us to rethink in this window?

“The young guy is a good player. We have tracked him for a number of months, the club has been watching him and I have been to watch him.

“It is one where the agent of the player and the clubs were talking but if the deal can’t be done, the deal can’t be done. I know the club has been working very hard to get players in. I’ll leave that to them and see how they get on.

“He’s a boy that is a talent. He is 21 years of age and people saw his qualities in the games against Chelsea and Tottenham in Europe. But you need to have that list because if it doesn’t work out, then you are hoping there are one or two others.”

I don't have a problem with not signing Salah. People are blowing that out of proportions, he's not that great of a player and he definitely wasn't worth that much money.

However, I do have a problem with not signing anyone at all when we clearly need improving especially considering our thin squad (plus the injury list) and how our rivals have strengthen.

Agree to some extent, we are already struggling to fit 4 quality forwards (Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho and Sterling) into just 3 places so another attacker wasn't a priority IMO, but this Salah situation does raise questions about our ability or rather inability to close out deals, by all accounts we have been tracking him for months and have been negotiating with Basel for weeks but Chelsea somehow come along and complete a deal in a couple of days. We are not talking about a astronomical fee here either.
In the past we have missed out on the likes of Dempsey, Mkhitaryan, Papadopolous and Willian over trying to drive a hard bargain, now it's arguable wether all of those signings would have been good aquisition's but the general point is that if you are going to constantly count your pennies then it's going to take a minor miracle to compete with clubs who spend £40m on 1 player.

I don't think it was that bad Yakka. We've probably only had Salah on our radar but Basel asked for too much and that was probably that. 16 million is nowhere near his price. Oh well, good luck to him warming the bench in Chelsea.

I agree with your second part though. We have a horrible transfer policy and we can't compete with rivals such as ours like that.

We could have had him for 12 million two weeks ago. We have no problem sorting of sponsorship deals.

Thing is though, Cheaski bought him for a reported 11m, which isn't really far off to what we offered.  If the manager really wanted the player that much, we should have up'ed our figure.

Cheaski/Maureen playing dirty, they'll get their come up-pence just you watch, as will the Mwancks, Wouldn't surprise me if Maureen and whiskey nose were in cahoots with each other. Selling Mata to a direct rival  :no  ???  What's that all about (shrek I suppose)

Anyway, how many of our targets have been hijacked in recent times? Others I can think off have been by totshite. Negotiating team need a good kick.....

he didnt go for 16 million though did he.
its not about whether you or i rate this player or not, it about whether or not the manager did and clearly he does.

Some sources say that he went for 16 million. I like to believe those because:
1. I don't think that we wouldn't have matched that if we really wanted him
2. 21 mill for Matic + 16 for Salah = 37 from Mata. That was their idea

If we really did let him leave to Chelsea for 11 mill without even trying to match that than I'll have to wonder how the hell do FSG think that we'll ever be able to compete in this league or if that's even their goal.

They have all year to sort out sponsorship deals. This month their focus should have been on players. Our squad is paper thin and their focus is not where it should be. Their letting us down.
