You have to wonder if we were ever serious about signing Mkhitaryan when you see him going for a reported £20.5m fee.

Lots of reports saying that we were told by Shakter that he was interested in joining us once Dortmund showed interest due to CL

I'm quite happy about this.

We have shown Shakhtar, Schalke and Porto (and thus the rest of Europe) this summer that we won't be held to ransom and will walk away from deals if we don't think it's value for money.

It might mean missing out on players and some hurt in the short term but I believe it will benefit us in the longterm.

I also had serious reservations about spending 20mil plus on a player not yet proven in one of the top leagues.  Yes he had some good games in the CL but not enough to judge his true calibre imo.

I can't get too upset about losing out on a player i had never heard of until 4 weeks ago and I wasn't especially blown away by what i saw online of the lad plus (as John says) he wasn't exactly bossing it in la liga or the bundesliga.

Am sure there are planty of attacking middies out there and besides I'd much rather we turned our attention to the considerably bigger area of need ie. centre-half.

Mkhitaryan, I was really hoping we would get him. Seemed very impressed by his video. I think we lost out on him because of CL.

Hopefully, we end up making this another coutinho over sigurdsson situation.

Anyone willing to suggest good alternatives that could be reasonable targets?

i cant say i`m impressed with our dealings so far
we spend £12m on a keeper that it increasingly looks like we dont need, we fork out £8m on a 25 year old thats played just one season in the spanish top flight, we spend £8m on a `decent prospect` who hasnt played a single game in the top flight, we refuse to stump up the £17m schalke want for one of the top young defenders in europe and then we lose out on the one marquee name we have been seriously linked with all summer.
i know its early days but we dont seem to be acting like a club on a mission to break into the top 4 next season.

So Mkhitaryan did,nt want to sign for us. Well that's his choice f.uck him because if ANY player does,nt want to play for us I don't want to see them here. I want to see players who WANT to play for this club.

Since the price for Mkhtaryan was 20m and not more, it's obvious that the player himself didn't want to come here and chose Dortmund instead. It's not our fault, we did all we could, move on. Now how about Eriksen?

We can't attract top players at the moment, we can't even qualify for the Europa let alone the Champions League.
I agree about Mignolet, unless Reina is going I don't see why we need him.
I know what you mean about Aspas and Alberto but I thought the same when Coutinho arrived.

What we do need is a top class centre half. It's early days yet I can see another couple coming in.

As for the lad going to Dortmund, can't really blame him, they are going places whereas we are trying to find our way at the moment.

Which other club has done better than us? Citeh? Utd? Bitters? Spurs?  Nope. We're the only ones out there buying anyway, against the flow, most clubs are reducing the wage bill and battening  down the hatches in the current economic environment.

Without Champs League football and a massive budget I am not convinced limiting our options to
younger players only is best practice at this point so that's a concern.

I not suggesting buying a team of old players, but more like Toure may be something we are not allowing
ourselves to do when it could actually be a good two season deal just to get us in that top 4.

Some of these older pros are proven quality but club policy is not allowing them in.
