Why would a top club splash serious cash on Pepe when he's got 3 years left? Why wouldn't Arsenal go find themselves a 26 year old as a longer term investment, why would Barca do the same when they too should be looking longer term? I fear we'll be disappointed by the outcome of this.

Gk's are a bit different I think - they still go for a decent price in their 30's. I think Barce will make a bid but it will be low

They have too now - we can't afford to have players on 100 grand a week sat on the bench

That's what I'd 'ave thought.

So we have reduced the ability of the first team ( IMO ) and the wage bill ( important to the owner )

Shakhtar Donetsk have once against denied reports that they have agreed to sell star midfielder Henrik Mkhitaryan, saying that currently there are no offers on the table.

Speculation linking Mkhitaryan with moves to Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund have continued this week, after Shakhtar had turned down a €23million bid from the German Bundesliga club.

Shakhtar chief executive Sergei Palkin says that since that initial bid there has been no more offers from anyone, with Liverpool yet to even make a formal bid.

However, whilst he told press there is no buy-out clause in the 24-year-old Armenian international’s contract, the club are willing to let Mkhitaryan go for €30million.

“There is nothing new about Mkhitaryan,” Palkin told Football.ua. “I already have said that Borussia Dortmund offered €23 million for him; this was the sole offer. [But] our position is €30 million.

“Mkhitaryan’s contract does not specify a compensation payment. Thirty million dollars need to be paid to sever the contract unilaterally.

“If we go with the civilized way and sell a player but he severs the contract, we specify a transfer value of €30million.”

For those confused by the mention of dollars in the quotes, we suspect he means Euros. The currency in Ukraine is the hryvnia. €30million is about £25million.

Mkhitaryan seems to be trying to force his way out of the Ukranian champions, not showing up for pre-season training last week.

However, the transfer saga is still wide open with nothing from Mkhitaryan or his representatives, Liverpool, or Dortmund.

Earlier today it was reported that Liverpool are still some way from a deal for Mkhitaryan, and the BBC’s Phil McNulty denied Liverpool have to sell Luis Suarez to be able to afford the Armenian.

So, so far we really haven't spend anything. IN: Toure (free), Aspas (7.7m), Alberto (6m), Mignolet (9m) = £22.7m

OUT: Carroll (15m), Shelvey(6m) (Imminent), Ince (35% sell-on, around 3m) = £24m

The Times’ Tony Barrett, an expert on all things Liverpool, has given fans of the Reds renewed hope that Henrikh Mkhitaryan will arrive at Anfield this summer.

After a few days of relative silence on Liverpool’s pursuit of the Armenian, The Times have provided a short update in their Thursday paper.

Liverpool will continue their attempts to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan, despite Shakhtar Donetsk demanding €30 million (about £25.5 million).

The succinct update in The Times will encourage Liverpool fans that their club haven’t given up the ghost of trying to sign the Donetsk attacking midfielder after plenty of earlier rumours suggesting a deal had already been done have since proven to be false.

The Mirror on Thursday have also given an update on Mkhitaryan, claiming the player “is ready to break his contract to force a cut-price £20million move to Liverpool. The Mirror can reveal the Armenian midfielder is in dispute with his Ukrainian club Shakhtar Dontesk – and has effectively gone on strike – over the terms of that deal, which contains a clause allowing him to terminate it and move for that figure.”

Should the deal come to fruition, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers would be bagging a Champions League quality player, adept at late runs into the box as well as a fine finisher.

Yes, apparently Mkhtaryan can break his contract and pay a fine of around 20m in pounds. I'd rather we do that than pay the 25m Sakhtar are asking, that would be a good deal for us and reasonable for both sides. Sakhtar are saying that they want this to be done in a "civilized way" as in not by Mkhtaryan forcing his way out, but they're asking for too much money IMO. 20m is enough.

i would NOT be happy with that situation. To support a forced move when your team is the beneficiary is hypocrisy of the highest order.

If that is the way it pans out we should be ashamed. Especially when you consider the outrage caused by Suarez' attempted forced move antics.

are we really interested in him though? we seem to be dragging our feet and have yet to submit any bid or make contact with shaktar so its beginning to look more and more like media drivel by the day.
if we are interested then we should at least open talks with them on a fee that we feel is acceptable and go from there. he is a decent player and one that will improve us so get it done before we lose out.
i have a inkling though that any more signings will be dependent on sales

hope you are not laying the foundations for your next hate figure.....unfortunately players have broken contracts for many a year; every club has probably experienced it at sometime, we have been the victims of player power ourselves ....buying out your contract seems pretty reasonable considering some players would just play like a bag of sh!te for awhile just to force through a move
