underwhelmed is the word, so far.

This is the funniest post I have read in years!!!!

The transfer window hasn't even opened yet and your underwhelmed!!! Please??????

"i cant see these players we are going for at the moment being good enough to bridge the gap between us and the top 4." Have you been sitting under Brendan's desk listening in to find out who we are after or are you just reading the "rumours" and paper talk that hasn't got a clue????

Give him a chance ffs

well if you are inferring that i`m stupid because it`s an absolute stonewall fact that some top players will be signing for us i hope your right, but with a transfer philosophy like ours i wouldnt assume big names are automatically on their way.
we want players to sign for us on relatively modest wages and earn the right to earn the big money (even suarez started off here on 30 odd grand a week).
that policy is admirable but it takes some doing these days (when the game is awash with oil money) trying to convince some of the top prospects in the game to join us, especially when you factor in no CL football.
imo, without top prospects (like muriel, erikssen, papadopolous etc) our chances of bridging a already considerable points gap arent good.
the teams above us wont be bringing in players for £2m here and £3m there, i can guarentee you that.

Guardian has said we are putting in a £22 million bid for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, an Armenian attacking midfielder playing for Donetsk.  25 goals and 7 assists in 28 league games, 2 goals and I dunno how many assists in 8 games in Europe for a 24 year old is not bad at all.  Just looking at Wiki his father was a really good footballer in the 80s, his mother is one of the top people in the Armenian football association national teams department, and his sister works at UEFA.  Needless to say he was raised on football, so maybe he's got it in his blood.

That's a lot of money for somebody only proven in Ukraine, but his stats are crazy good, especially for an attacking midfielder.

10 goals in 36 goals for Armenia as well, which wouldn't be easy to do.. Just watched the highlight video and he had some absolutely ridiculous goals... Seems able to score from anywhere, anyway.

Obviously highlight videos can even make Charlie Adam look good, so for what it's worth...

never even heard of the lad but he must be good if we are opening with a 20 mil bid. if he is as good as you say he is then he could be suarez's replacement.
its a big step up from the russian league to the prem but from his stats he does look like he can finish.
whats happening with that lad muriel ?

Liverpool have identified Shakhtar Donetsk's Henrikh Mkhitaryan as a leading transfer target for the summer and are not deterred by the £22m price tag on one of the most coveted players in European football.

The Anfield club have registered their interest in the Armenia international, who scored a record 25 goals in the Ukrainian Premier League last season despite operating as an attacking midfielder. Mkhitaryan put Europe's leading clubs on alert following Shakhtar's elimination from the Champions League by admitting he wanted to play for "one of the strongest clubs in the world", and the 24-year-old was subsequently linked with Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City.

Liverpool, however, tracked the midfielder throughout last season and believe Mkhitaryan would consider a move to Anfield despite the lack of European football currently on offer and rival interest.

Armenia's three-time player of the year was a priority signing for the Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers, before Luis Suárez began pushing for the move that could transform the club's transfer strategy and budget. Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool's owners, are prepared to sanction a big money move for Mkhitaryan without a deal in place for Suarez, with both Real and Atletico Madrid interested in the Uruguay international, although uncertainty over other Anfield players is a complication at present.

Liverpool agreed a £15m deal with West Ham United for Andy Carroll within days of the Premier League season ending and had hoped the transfer would be completed swiftly to allow them to move on to targets such as Mkhitaryan. But the England international has refused to be pushed into joining Sam Allardyce's team on a long-term basis, following a successful though injury-plagued season on loan, and has been waiting for other options.

Carroll still has three years remaining on his Liverpool contract but has been told he has no future at Anfield regardless of whether Suarez leaves and with Daniel Sturridge likely to miss the start of next season with an ankle ligament injury. Besides forcing his way back into Rodgers's plans, having drawn encouragement from Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing doing likewise last season, the 24-year-old also wishes to return to Newcastle United but his former club are not prepared to match West Ham's offer.West Ham have not placed a time-scale on an answer from Carroll and, though Liverpool are confident the £15m transfer will eventually proceed, the Anfield club are concerned the impasse could affect other deals.

Liverpool do expect to complete the £7.7m signing of the Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas this week, with the 25-year-old due on Merseyside for a medical following his club's relegation reprieve on the final day of the Spanish league season, and have agreed the free transfer of Kolo Touré when his Manchester City contract expires at the end of the month. Rodgers has several targets beyond Mkhitaryan, however, with his defence in need of several additions and the next season's strike-force clouded by Suárez's discontent. Liverpool have yet to receive an official bid for last season's 30-goal striker, who will have to submit a transfer request when the anticipated move from Madrid arrives.

Rodgers, who plans to move for the Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet should Pepe Reina leave this summer, is willing to pay £12m for his first-choice central defender, Kyriakos Papadopoulos, and is also keen on Tiago Ilori, of Sporting Lisbon. But Schalke are insisting on closer to £20m for Papadopoulos, who missed the final months of the Bundesliga season with a knee injury, and Liverpool are reluctant to be dragged into an auction for the Greek.

Good player but that's a ridiculous fee. I bet he'll ask for big wages too.

Yea but he's at Donetsk.. how much do you think he's on right now? 30, 40 at most?  If he's a big marquee signing like he seems to be, we could easily afford double his wages and I imagine he'd be more than happy.

If we're going for an attacking midfielder I'd rather we went for Eriksen.

i`d prefer it if we spent that type of money on a wide forward like muriel but i suspect we`ve got no chance of signing someone like him as the moment he came onto the market the super rich clubs would start waving wads of cash about under his nose.
this mkhitaryan is highly rated himself though and a lot more exciting than the names we`ve been seriously linked with so far. our midfield went AWOL at various times last season (like southampton away and arsenal at home etc) so we could certainly do with strengthening that department.
schalke wanting £20m for papadopolous is probably the reason why it`s all gone quiet on that front.

I do hope we get in a central defender and a DM amidst all this attacking threat we're being linked with.

From what I've seen of Mkhitaryan so far, it's clear that the boy has literally everything in his locker - a wonderful shot from distance, good ability to tackle and hassle people, dribbling ability to beat a man and pace to get past, and decent passing skills. We need a team of do it all midfielders who all have the above qualities instead of having to rely on individuals who can do one thing but not the others. In this sense, I think this lad would be a great addition.

I don't think we're going to let Suarez go and that's good. If we have to let him go, it won't be less than for 50 million which will be sufficient to fund a move for someone like Benteke who probably is going to be a future star.

We need a team of runners, hustlers, passers, and people with a winning mentality. I think it's clear that this has been Rodgers' recently imposed criterion and it's visible in the transfer targets we've been linked with so far.
