Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

It seems that this guy is a new addition to the club.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/footba ... ield.html#

so this guy is a cycling coach who has been credited with the success of team gb's cycling team.
rodgers seems to think he will be a great asset to the club and his addition will be to mentally fine tune the players :eyebrow .
personally i think he's a psychiatrist who will be giving one on one sessions as well as team pep talks and if im honest my opinion is that this might work well with athletes like a cyclist, golfer or boxer it doesnt really apply to a team sport like football.
i also feel that if the manager feels he needs this guy to motivate players and get more from them then its a quality that he is lacking himself.
what are the forums opinion on this lad and what he can bring to the side? or is it just a waste of money and a load of tosh?.

All this mumbo jumbo is a load of s.*i*e. football is a very simple game. You get the ball, you keep the ball you pass it FORWARD to a player and you score a goal. That's how you win football matches.SIMPLE

What?
Are you saying that all this scrutiny and analysis, all this attention to detail, all the stats, facts and figures, theories, tactics, false number nines, christmas tree and diamonds are sh'ite??!!
Here was me thinking that football is an intricate, unfathomable mystery which is only solved by rocket surgeons and brain scientists!
I watched Wigan on saturday and thats how we should play football. (at the front, not at the back  :;): )

IMO I don't think they would. Almost all players from that era that comment on style of todays game say the main differences are the speed of the game and the quality of the passing (driven largely by the quality of the pitches). The older team would get passed out of the game if they had not had months of training to adapt the to the speed and passing quality the game has today.

there is nothing special about modern players, whenever they play away in europe on a poor pitch (and when i say poor pitch it would be a bowling green by 1970`s standards) half of them look like they`ve never even played the game before, a few bobbles on the pitch and their control goes to f**k. if they had to play on the mud baths and frozen ice rinks that the players from yesteryear had to play on they`d be useless.
they are not even quicker, in the 1970`s the newcastle striker malcom mcdonald appeared on the t.v program superstars and ran the 100m in 10.9, thats fractionally slower than walcotts best time and whats more mcdonald was built like a tank, he was a target man centre forward. mcdonald wasnt even renowned for being that quick in the 70`s but mud is a big leveller, it`s hard to sprint on slippy surfaces.
the other thing is the physicality, lets see how quick the likes of walcott and henry would be after the likes of tommy smith and norman hunter had crashed right through them a few times without even getting a booking.
these modern players do have the benefit of sports science and nutrition etc but it`s not the be all and end all, modern british middle distance runners can get no where near the times the likes of seb coe and steve ovett ran in the late 70`s and their training methods were archaic by modern standards.
how many modern british sprinters have beat alan wells time of 10.00 seconds flat? in 30 years only 2 and both of them were caught taking performance enhancing drugs.
these modern training methods and sports science arent the miracle they are often portrayed as, the medical side (i.e recovering from injuries etc) has improved massively though.

I think this could be a very good idea, it certainly works in many other sports like Tennis and gold, but I do wonder if most of our players are to thick, or to fecking arrogant, for a phycologist to work with them.

There seems to be a disconnect between this guy making our lads 'believe' and loser Downing's comments after the Ure game.

Surely the shrink has compiled a psychological profile of each player and highlighted who has the right mentality for the big games? Surely this guy spent the day before the game at Anfield prepaing the boys mentally? I'd like to know where this has gone wrong.

Apart from a complete lack of leadership that is.

Downing is way too insecure about himself, probably he was bullied as a kid :D
